Funnily enough. I have been doing ‘bike fit’ for past 10 years or so-always learning. James and Neill are the two guys I always enjoy and add to my simple understanding.
James and Niell would not end up with the same fit conclusions. No slight on either man, just different conclusions are drawn by different fitters. This is the pitfall of bike fit. Its subjective. Ultimately its up to the rider what works best for power, aerodynamics and comfort. Eddy Merckx throughout his racing career tinkered with his fit. Lance Armstrong rode two bikes sizes larger than a conventional racing fit for a man of his height, femur and arm length.
There's a farmer somewhere who's lost a gate, that's a looooong top tube. The saddle drop is surprising, I couldn't ride with 30mm excess height and be remotely comfortable. Love the technology, the way it shows the imbalance between sides is very good.
2025 and the GOAT is back 🙌 Every bike fitting video you bring out James we just learn more and more 👌 HNY and wish well for the year and keep the content coming please 🥳
For the next Q&A, can you suggest fitting tips for “irregular proportion” please? Like longer torso or shorter femur to tibia ratio for example, thanks!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. Very timely for me. I've recently realised I have the same issue with right foot over-pronating. G8s on their way. Looking forward to trying them. It's logical that, in a well-fitted shoe, an over-pronating foot creates most perceived pressure on the outside of the foot. The foot is effectively getting slightly wider creating force against both sides of the shoe. The sideways force on the inside of the foot is spread across a wide area. The same force on the outside of the foot acts on a much smaller area which means more pressure.
Hi James. Happy New Year! Big fan here. Would really like to see a client come in and get measured, u recommend, buy, get the fit, ride for two weeks then get back and see how it goes. We will see existing bikers but would like to see someone with zero experience. Would also like to see the nice ladies get fitted. At least we see you dress up once in a while. LOL
Damn James, how I wish to get a bike fit with you. Sadly I'm in Portugal 😊 I'm getting a lot of knowledge from your videos and I try to apply it, but there are so many questions from a guy that just bought his 1st road bike (Triban RC520 Women), pedals (SPD-SL RS500) and shoes (Lake CX238). My sister is a podiatrist I gess i'll put her to work on the arch suport thing on the shoes 😃 cheers mate. Thanks a lot for your videos!
Experimenta pesquisar por Orbis Lab em Sintra. Acredito que o conhecimento seja diferente entre o Nuno e o James, mas o Nuno também muitas provas dadas pelo Reino Unido
As another Tripster v3 owner, could have told him he's definitely not on an oversize frame before James did. On a 56cm (just over 5ft 10), and very comfortable for long distance. A 54 would sort-of-work, but I'd end up with a lot of toe overlap, a very long stem…as for a 52....no chance!
I have a question about crank length and flexibility for your next Q&A if you do one. I used to do martial arts when I was young and now in my mid 50's I am still very flexible, I can still easily sit my chin between my knees and almost touch my toes with straight legs. I don't seem to have any issues with a 170mm crank, but I don't know if I am missing out on something by not going shorter. I am 175cm tall, have an 82cm inseam and ride a size small Scultura with a 90mm stem. I am only asking because I want to buy a new crank with a power meter in it and don't want to buy twice as they are quite expensive. Cheers.
Gods I wish I could find a "Bikefit James" in Flanders ^^. I mean, we DO have bikefitters, but good luck finding a good one. Bit like finding a good doctor or therapist: Sure you can spend quite a lot of money, but there's no 'standard' way of doing things and you'll spend quite a lot on 2-3 different therapists before you find one that A. actually listens , B. knows what they're doing, have the tools to do and C. are willing to update their knowledge with date from new developments in the fields. Don't feel like taking the Eurostar to London for a bikefit. Yet...
I love all of your content and bikefit beliefs but I just had a bikefit from George fox for Road bike TT on my race bike and it definitely 100% performance, I'd love to see your take on race/TT bikefiting.
May I suggest a specific topic for an upcoming video? I've experiencing a numb right foot after around an hour of riding. I've tried several different shoes (including wide ones like Lake) and different insoles, specifically for biking with increased arch support. Nothing is helping. I think my general bike fit is OK (I dont have any other issues), and I'm struggling to understand why only my right foot is affected. The left foot does not make any problems, even after 5+ hours of riding. Could the problem be related to asymmetrical hips, different leg lengths, insufficient arch support, a wrong saddle (shape, width) or anything else?
Maybe a Q-factor issue, a cleat position issue, or cleat height. There are too many causes for nerve compression or poor blood flow. Generally, I'd have somebody look at how you're positioned at the top first and if you feel lower back pain. If that doesn't happen, check hip tilt to see for asymmetry in leg length as well as hip stance. Next to check is the cleat position, shoe size fit for each foot, and arch degree for each foot.
@Bikefitjames it's starting a little towards the outside, but mainly in the center. A few minutes later all toes go numb. I've also changed the cleat position (forwards and all the way backwards as well as inwards and outwards). In addition: I'm using SPD MTB cleats (two bolt)
Make sure cleats are well back but also Stress around the lower back and pelvis can cause pinched nerves that lead to foot numbness. I would suggest booking into a physio and do a battery test. We all have one leg longer than the other & they’ll pull you back level.
Another seat is too high, which seems to be the first place to start. My question is, have you ever seen anyone that actually set a bike up properly at home and just confirmed what they have done? I ask this question because I seem to see that everyone could benefit from what you do and your skills.
@Bikefitjames I have a toe that did not come ay too good after a jack hammering. The toes on my right food are not 100%. Would I benefit from custom mouded insoles?
You talk só fast, it's hard to understand for someone whose native language is not English. The room reflects sounds a lot, making speech even more difficult to understand. You move away from the microphone a lot, why not attach a wireless one? I really like these videos!
Oh, man. I just commented on that above without having seen your comment. I agree. I am hard of hearing, and then it doesn't matter what your first language is when speed is turning everything into a mess of sound. Subtexts are not any help, they are even worse.
Can we get you and Neill Stanbury in the same bike fit session and see a TH-cam video of you guys comparing notes on the same bike fit?! 🙌🏻
That would be such a good video

@ that’s literally why a video like that would be sweet
@lukewalker1051 I always tell my friends that bike fit is more of an Art than Science.
Another suggestion: have your editor do a split screen showing the rider position before and after.
I’ll pass it on
I've learned so much from these videos (and the earlier Cade Media ones as well). Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Always insightful = Thanks again James !
Strangely excited to see you this coming Wednesday for my Bike Fit!
Never regretted mine. Enjoy
@@paulawright6868 Good to know, and thanks - will do - just hoping I don't hear "Your bike is too big" 🤣
@@DanielFrench hope not! See you next week!
Is that for the Specialized S Works with the custom paint?
@ yes! 🙌🏼 could be awkward if it is too big! 😂😂
I wish you were here, I have a similar issue as I ride with riding outward
Sadly BIKE FIT JAMES isn't in Malaysia. 😢
So much knowledge shared. Thanks

How about a session with how to setup G8 for people at home?
I found mine were pretty easy as they quickly went from feels okay to ow the inserts are too far forward now.

isnt the nose of all saddles just not ergo enought, designed for pressure smash area??
@bikefit james
Do you think people may sometimes run the seat too high because the saddle is too far back?
yay james is back
Don't tell the wife. 😂

It would be cool to include shots from the sides and front/back of the person before the fit. Nice guessing game for regular viewers.

I'm not sure if i missed it but how tall is the rider?
Curious to know if shoe wedges are included in the fitting price?
No they’re not
Did you put an additional heel wedge on top of another on his right insole?
It’s possible
Really interesting this one. I have same bike, 62cm! I’m 6’5 with mutant limb length😁 any chance you can share height and inseam?
I want a bike fitter James T-Shirt!
looks like a primary teacher
I got the opposite problem, longer legs, shorter torso, below average male height...
James desperately needs a sleeve mic on him all the time, too much echo and it’s hard to understand what he is saying sometimes
This. And maybe pay attention to speed of speech as well, particularly for those whose first language isn't English.

I believe most can, there are occasions when riders have got it pretty much bang on so we spend a lot more time on the shoe set up

That bike is 2 sizes too big for him.
No it isn’t
I'd say he's a 56cm frame
