The first type of slide you showed is great for a beginner like myself. I'm 58 just this March 2020 and am enjoying some practice time. But I do believe with time I can learn the bends and pulloffs you are teaching here. Thank you Sir
Keep at it, Becky, the best advice I can give you is, practice in 30 minute sessions a couple of times a day, it'll give what you learn a wee bit of time to sink in, long sessions just become frustrating. Good luck.
This is exceptional. What I needed when I was playing . . . (er, I mean attempting to learn. . . .) a lot. And what helps too is the camera on your hat. Seeing your work from the same perspective as you're seeing it. Man. I appreciate this.
Did anyone notice the nut on the banjo??? The second string is lengthened..... Very cool... I did this to a Gibson banjo years ago and worked great...wasn't my idea, came from Stelling, but still did a great job with intonation....
It comes partly from the different path lengths of the strings from the nut to the bridge. The bridge can also be adjusted. I like the moon 🌙 bridges. There’s numerous options.

I bought Earl's book because I wanted to play his songs exactly like he did. The problem is, Earl would often make little changes in how he picked a song. I think he kept it kind of basic in his book.
I gather Bill Keith might have written the book, transcribing what Earl played. I imagine Earl couldn't necessarily say exactly what notes he'd just played, being "in the moment" and in any case probably played a few versions without thinking :-)
You’re dead right! I didn’t even notice that as a relatively new banjo player but played guitar over 50 years I was doing this unconsciously while working through Earls book. It’s just doesn’t sound like him unless you do it. But to find I was intentionally doing it but completely unconsciously blew me out. Groundspeed, all of them have the microtone blue note additions. It amazes but then after 50 years fretting it amazes me that my hand remembers song my brain had long forgotten, like a bunch ragtime solos that came back I learned in 1977 in the art of ragtime guitar. I just happened to voice a G7 chord in the same idiosyncratic manner as the solo while messing about and my hand went off into the Ragtime Ramble alternating bass with the syncopated counterpoint like I learned it yesterday. Music is very subconscious come to think of it really. Still an interesting observation.

Im still a beginner. I play guitar and im very good ... but not amazing. I have stubby fingers and got great sustain and power. But its hard for me to play certain fret positions due to the alien style fingertips.. Do you have more lesson videos. I want to be great at banjo

HI ,Yes I can p[ay faster when I play cripple creek because my nand has a shorter way to go I think it sunds the same but will speed your playing up so thanks for showing us another way to the slide. 🪕

So that has a purpose. Ha! I was thinking he needed a new nut... Any idea why it needs lengthening?
It automatically adjusts the intonation of second string which otherwise never sounds quite in tune.
I did that to my bridge on the third string groove,,,I always find the third string goes sharp up the neck..no?
