Common 8 types of problems for cockatiels :
1. Lice and Mites
The dreaded feather mite is found in many domestic birds. Budgies are probably the worse affected, but cockatiels are not far behind. Unfortunately the feather mite is very small and is hard to spot just like that.
2. Egg binding
Egg-binding is when an egg takes longer than usual to pass out of the reproductive tract. This most commonly occurs in smaller birds such as parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, canaries, and finches. Young birds reproducing for the first time and older hens are the most vulnerable to egg-binding.
3. Bacterial Infections
- Cockatiels, like budgies, are commonly afflicted with respiratory disease caused by the bacteria, Chlamydophila psittaci.
- Another organism that commonly affects cockatiels is the internal parasite, Giardia.
4. Giardiasis
Protozoal infections are common in small parrots such as budgerigars, lovebirds, and cockatiels. Protozoal infections alter the intestinal environment, interfering with the absorption of vitamins and nutrients, and with the digestion of fat. Infected birds often show symptoms of malnutrition.
5. Respiratory Infection
Psittacosis is an uncommon infectious disease that is most often transmitted to humans through exposure to infected birds, especially parrots, cockatiels, parakeets and similar pet birds. Psittacosis can affect the lungs and may cause inflammatory illness of the lungs (pneumonia).
6. Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, seems to be of an unknown cause. Research into the cause and treatment of cockatiel conjunctivitis is continuing. Any eye problems in a cockatiel should be diagnosed by an avian veterinarian to determine the disease.
7. Paralysis
Cockatiels can develop a psittacosis syndrome that causes paralysis of the limbs, and usually dark, tarry stools. Additionally, cockatiels and neophemas (turquoisines, scarlet-chested parakeets) with low-grade infections may seem to have an eye disease resembling a sty.
8. Liver disorder
Obesity with the resultant fatty liver disease is one of the most common nutritional diseases that we see in birds, particularly in parakeets and cockatiels. This is due to the high fat seed diet that they normally consume. Traditionally, birds have been provided with seeds and water as their main diet.
