@@martinpearson7744 They were doing a kinetic recovery with a static strap off an 8inch drop hitch. The drop hitch failed and was launched resulting in the fatality. Proper equipment is crucial, never do a kinetic recovery with a static strap or chain. Hooking points are critical as well.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery I have seen this more than once, and it nearly decapitated me one time. You start a recovery with a method that can be safe (i.e. chains but with a slow, steady pull), and the driver of the recovery vehicle gets frustrated and begins to yank instead. In our case (circa 1997), the chain snapped on the third pull while we were yelling at him to stop and rebounded into the tailgate of the stuck truck that I was in - bending it inward over 30 degrees. Just a couple inches higher and it would have been through the back window of a late-80s Toyota - and us. Since then I only use recovery-rated straps (or ropes), and if it looks sketchy AT ALL, I wrap a towel around the midpoint to redirect any potential projectiles downward in the case of failure.
Years ago I saw a rancher attempt a snatch on a mud stick combine. My cousin and I were driving by and he asked us to help him. We tried to talk him out of it but he insisted and had my cousin in the big harvester. He had a chain on the axle and pulled with a 1 ton dually ranch truck. The chain either broke or came off, split the tailgate top to bottom, took the pump off a bed mounted fuel tank, went thru the back window and out thru the front glass. Luckily he ducked when he felt sudden slack. Pretty sure he soiled himself.
That truck is a fantastic example of why I DON’T like electrical shift transfer cases! But I’m old school so what do I know. Of course, I can fix a points distributor or carburetor while I’m in a mud hole as well 😊
If it's in 4lo then the t-case is fine. I get not having a lever but if the t-case is in low, the front output is 100% spinning. Never using 4WD until you are stuck is a bigger issue that electronics failing.

Lizzie, when you said that about having having to take it easy turning because the truck didn't have power steering and that you know what that's like. It made me think of my all time favorite video. It was the one where Matt drug you for miles in that beat up car that was missing one of the wheels, the windshield was missing and the doors would not shut. Even though I was so scared for you being in that car with Matt going to fast, you not being able to see and the doors slamming back and forth I laughed so hard I couldn't see for the tears in my eyes. You have come a long way and are a valued member of the team.
Try and get a truck where 4WD is engaged with a floor shifter, not the dashboard operated ones that use vacuum. Automatic locking hasn't worked on my 2000 Super Duty for 10 years. Now the front hubs leak enough vacuum that it won't reliably stay in 4WD. Ford always has a better idea, right?
Curious about that Excursion, my Ford has to be put into 4 high first and after it locks the hubs you have to put it in neutral to lock 4 low, if he went straight to 4 low then that could have been the problem.
Getting that Ford truck out; Matt and crew are absolute pros. That did not look to be easy, even though they made the job look easy. So many would have not been able to get that truck out.
When I think back to Lizzy's first several appearances, I won't even say all the things I assumed about her, but now I believe I was dead-wrong, and I owe her an apology, I'M SORRY LIZZY!, she's actually become my favorite personality on this channel, great job guys, and thanks for sharing.
Way to go Lizzy! So comfortable with the commentary. They grow up so fast! That is a great group of people working there. I wish I knew people like you guys. Nice job everyone.
That Excursion has a 2005 front end, but the mirrors are older and the engine sounds like a 7.3. I can tell you my Excursion weighs 8,100 pounds with 44 gallons of fuel; and you pulled one out. Great video!
Love seeing the growth Lizzy has done while with MORR! From sleepy gal in the back seat, to team lead on a recovery, learning to weld, and learning how to be comfortable in front of the camera. Young lady has the skill set to run the operation (At least on the ground side, dunno how she is on the paperwork and business end of things. Yet.) as the person in charge. Her dad seems to be a smart dude. Making sure things are fueled up before you start is pretty professional. Not sure how old Lizzy is, but I'm betting that my daughter is a tad older than she is. Daughter chose a professional career with a degree, over the blue collar workforce, but that's ok. She's happy, likes her job and gets decent pay. Love seeing Lizzy on the channel, though. Gonna be a smile in there somewhere, that brightens things. Even when it's raining. (Good job Lizzy, on being the only one prepared for rain, with a rain jacket!)
I think the whole crew was disappointed because there was no mud and it made the recovery too easy. Maybe the next one might be a hard one to make up for an easy one. Lizzie has gotten good with the shackles to use them one handed. Her skills are amazing. She can do whatever needs done.
Question - have you seen the industrial air bags that are sometimes used in recovery ops and would something like that be helpful here to help break the suction the Excursion was experiencing? i.e. place it under perhaps part of the vehicle to lift it up while doing a pull? Just curious is all.
Always worried when Lizzy is sitting in those rigs with nothing between her and something slinging back at her. Bless you all with safety. Never take a risk.
@@capacious1288 The vehicle can be suctioned into the mud so strongly that it can cause people to pull harder than necessary, in which case the rope could break and hurt someone

International Scouts had the right idea. You only needed to lock the hubs manually, when you really needed them. Otherwise, they just worked just fine
@@robertheinkel6225 some had that weird pull the knob engage the chain transfer case, though.
Except he tried that this time and it didn’t work. So must be a different issue.
I haven't seen Lizzie for a while but she is becoming one upstanding, confident young woman. Impressive to see how far she has come.
Matt you never disappoint a person. GREAT crew and Ethan. THAT was awesome. Very 😎 cool. Thanks
Great job hosting Lizzie!
Curious about that Excursion, my Ford has to be put into 4 high first and after it locks the hubs you have to put it in neutral to lock 4 low, if he went straight to 4 low then that could have been the problem.
Exactly --- case of he does not know his truck ---- my '02 Excursion works the same as you described.
Wow. First recovery I've seen where you sounded a little worried going in. Nice work!
"I guess we pull it backwards. And then forwards."😂😁😇
It's awesome how Lizzie does more and more recoveries "unsupervised". Matt teaches her well! 😎🤟
Seriously awesome job the 3 of you of the A TEAM...
Way to go Lizzy! So comfortable with the commentary. They grow up so fast! That is a great group of people working there. I wish I knew people like you guys. Nice job everyone.
Ford Expedition with a 7.3 Powerstroke is the MacDaddy of 4x4 SUV's. Awesome vehicle.
WHAT? Filling up the gas tank before you run out of fuel! Does Matt know about this wonderful new concept? HAHAHA! 🤣
Haven't been around the channel long. So Trevor is Lizzy's father?
@@exothermal.sprocket No. No one in the videos is her dad.
@@williamsanders2808 Ah okay. I didn't think so, but thanks for clarifying. From everything I've seen, she has had a very worthwhile home life.
Not just Lizzie, she did great but the whole MORR team! Another great clip.
I think the whole crew was disappointed because there was no mud and it made the recovery too easy. Maybe the next one might be a hard one to make up for an easy one. Lizzie has gotten good with the shackles to use them one handed. Her skills are amazing. She can do whatever needs done.
Good job by a great crew!
Lizzie is nailing it!!!! she has become a natural in narrating these videos! Excellent job Lizzie 👍
I was in Grafton Ghost town yesterday...and found it crazy to hear it used like it's a real place.
Question - have you seen the industrial air bags that are sometimes used in recovery ops and would something like that be helpful here to help break the suction the Excursion was experiencing? i.e. place it under perhaps part of the vehicle to lift it up while doing a pull? Just curious is all.
Who wants to deal with an air bag covered in muck?
@@TheBandit7613 They use them them for big trucks recovery frequently so it's not uncommon
@@TheBandit7613 and if the money is good enough, I'm sure they'd be happy to just like I would
Lizzy is very good at recovery and very beautiful to I love her
Wow, it’s fun watching Lizzie come so far…
I’m totally convinced that there is no job Matt and the crew can’t do they can get anything unstuck. They are amazing crew
Always worried when Lizzy is sitting in those rigs with nothing between her and something slinging back at her. Bless you all with safety. Never take a risk.
Why is it that you don’t want to use kinetic energy on a recovery like that?
Not worried about the dogs? or the dude standing right next to the ropes with a camera? But the girl sitting safely inside a vehicle? You crazy
@@capacious1288 The vehicle can be suctioned into the mud so strongly that it can cause people to pull harder than necessary, in which case the rope could break and hurt someone
This is straight to the point
Really Really Really disappointed not to see progress on TowTruckBuild was going to divert my trip next Wk just to see the build up close. Called Winder towing to see if I could get close to the new truck, but never got an answer. But with over a million fans u can’t get back to every request. Well it would have been a 6 hour detour anyway.
Absolutely Love Matt’s engineering can’t wait to see her go to work. I hope it makes tons of jobs easier. I devoted fan since way before the first hundred thousand plaque
Having Lizzie join the team like this is so awesome! love her attitude and amazing work ethic. 10/10 MORR Team!!
Lizzy is a big reason I love Matt’s Off Road Recovery. JC🌵
Steady on now! Filling the tank was almost too professional 😂😂
I like recoveries when Lizzie is running the show. Great job everyone!
