just found this and what a fab review, speaking much truth there Bob. I've run 2 Passat r-lines with 2.0 manual box in the last 2 years as company cars. I think it's gorgeous looking in that spec something VW had always struggled with looks of the Passat. Great all round motor. cheers Bob!

Thx for informative vid. I am looking at a 15 model clearance at moment with the 1.8T with manual box. U spoke of the gear box as being quite nice but I have read of others who think it's 'rubbery'? The model I am shopping is going for total price about 17,800 US > 15,900 euro>11,480 pounds. It's only one going for that price and I would have gone for a Golf TDI but they have just been stopped for sale here in states(TDI models only of course). So,leaves me with the passat with 1.8t engine or a 4 thousand less base Jetta with the 115 hp engine which I cannot fathom enjoying. I thanks you again for an informative vid. Any thoughts welcome!
I test drove this when it came to Finland and I was very surprised how nice the manual was to drive. I like the design a lot too, boring in a good VW way lol. Nice that we can see these reviews on youtube now also.

Bob, if you were single with no kids. What car would you buy in a "reasonable" prize range? To me the coupe models always look good and since I don't need much backseat space they also seem practical enough. If I could pick freely I would choose the Audi A7 but it's too expensive, but is there hope in cheaper segments?

Here in the states , we still have the old Passat. I wanted to buy the New one, the one you're driving, in January. Only the old ones.. So I bought a Loaded Jetta. I'm thinking maybe I'll do a trade in next year. I like everything you said about it. Smooth ride, Quiet, well sorted. I've driven the new Mazda, Camery, and Accord. I'll wait for the new Passat. The Jetta is good too By the way.. Smooth and Quiet.
Is the new Skoda Superb 1.4 TSI 150 worth the money because the new passat does not come with petrol only diesel. The only petrol for the passat is hybrid which is expensive?

cormycorndog51 Just finished with the new Superb for a week. I love it, it's a great car and you'd really have to think carefully where the money goes because the Superb is as good and better than the Passat in places.

The problem is the Mondeo won't be worth as much second hand, The Passat makes massive money, I have a VW Golf and a VW Transporter here in Ireland and a new Passat in Spain, superb car drove it home to Ireland and back to Spain in September superb performance I bought it new for €20,000 there, here it would be over €30,000 a rip off....and the tax only €50...........
Basic Design Flaw: Info screen should be higher up. Needs to be high as not to take your eyes off the road. With my Insignia even when looking at the screen you can still partially see the road so if something were to happen in front you stand a much better chance of seeing it.
as a b6 highline owner and having driven one exactly like this - i have to say it is reeeally boring inside ... no joke ... feels like a step downwards... BUT - its much more spacious in front and just better all around, and still a very decent car that i would probably pick over the competition - with the right spec and maybe in wagon form it could be quite awesome! currently id grab a used cc instead :)
Paddy Brady I'm going to find that out soon, I'm on the International first drive list for the new Superb. It looks great and feels it too. I sat in it during the Geneva motor show but that's not production class so we'll see
I bought my 1st VW Friday just gone and its a Passat, not brand new had 32,000 miles on the clock 2019 plate 2.0 TDI and I must say I haven't driven a better car, its absolutely bolted together with the most up market materials, I owned a Peugeot 508 back in 2013 which was lovely but this is easily 30% better.
My experience with a tsi engine so far: After 5000km this engine- when running iddle -started shaking. Engine misfires - according to VAG that is a normal behaviour for the TSI engines. ( Why the engine didn't have that problem the first 5000 km, remains a mystery. Probably that wasn't normal ! ). So expect this to happen at any time. My collegues car ( french make, also direct-injection petrol engine) which cost half the price, runs smoother. She makes fun of me, but in Germany they call this "Vorsprung durch Technik".
I disagree concerning the suspension. It is way too firm and bumpy BUT I haven't driven one with the adjustable damping yet. The steering also has been problematic for VW, no feel in the centre especially when crusing on motorways. In my test-Passat the lack of feel was sadly there but the most annoying thing was the lack of quality feel(!). The car made noise when going over uneven surfaces and the plastics inside rattled.
Sherukka I agree with the steering problem. I've had the car on motorways since and the steering appears to 'turn off' in top dead center. I think it's a save fuel thing but it does feel weird.
Bob Flavin Then wait when you got windy weather as I had, you have to constantly steer the car and if you drive one with all the gimmicks (the "not crossing line") you fight the system all the time and the car goes left and right! Not fun at all....

Mazda 6 and Mondeo don't share a single nut and bolt anymore. Two very different cars, made by two very different car manufacturers. Personally I'd go with the Mazda.

Dimekoza What did that article prove,I am talking about how the 6 was born, the 6 was born under the Ford umbrella just like how Duratec of Ford was born under Mazdas Umbrella, Both had a very happy life and partnerership was one of most successful partnership between brands, The Fusion or Mondeos CD platform was a derived platform that was used in old Ford Sierras,the Sierra split into the Mondeo and a CD chassis, the CD chassis as we know were known with many code names and was shared by Ford and Mazda is different applications, In USA Ford didnt use CD platform because they had the old s80 platform which was cheap and had lot of strength inbuilt into it, The CD platform grew in different directions in Ford and Mazdas care, Ford developed it into the CD4 while Mazda developed it into the 6 chassis, still if one inspects both these chassis the structure is 99% same,its just the bindings,break points,limp points etc that changed to suit both brands special needs, otherwise both are born from Fords old Sierra based chassis, Its just like saying Ford used Volvos 5 pot to power the RS MKII but there are purists who say its a Volvo motor but in reality Ford modified it to its absolute limits to make it into RS,Still I wud say its a VOLVO motor, Just like that the current Mondeo and 6 both have super identical chassis but built differently by both brands to suit their needs.

I had the chance to be present at both vehicles presentation and have seen the bare platform on display, and I can tell you they are totally different. You can find infinite number of information about this on the internet. So, to sum it up for you, the current Mazda 6, the 2013 model is a completely new, in house developed car by Mazda and has absolutely nothing in common with Ford.

I have a Golf Mk7 find the seat very hard and the door bins are lined on only one side so things rattle in the bins unless you put in tissue paper or whatever to stop the rattle and the CD changer takes up half the glovebox so little storage space is this the same on the new Passat.The wipers dont clear the windscreen right either they leave a film of water on the windscreen think this is a common problem with the new golf.I feel more detail should be given to the points i raise when looking at these cars as they can be very annoying.I would advise people to buy Ford the Mazda 6 best of all VW Ireland give very poor customer care if any.
VRT is a tax that's applied in Ireland to any car that's imported. It allows you to have an Irish licence plate on the car. All cars are imported into Ireland and there's laws against diving a car on a foreign plate so as you can see it's a monopoly and should be banned but it makes a lot of Tax money.
imbra9poriluk The Mazda 6 styling isn't to everyone's taste, I like it too but the cabin is a little on the fussy side. Choice is a good thing though right?
Had a Mazda 323f, it leaked water,like the titanic,needed suspension links every 3 months,went to look at Mazda premacy to replace it,some had rusty wheel arches at 4 and a half years.
Engine is shit. Timing chains snap. You can buy it if you're one of those people that lease cars for 2 yoers, then upgrade to new one. Otherwise stay away from it!
For me it looks like that. Passat B8 is a car for 50-60 year old male. Which is respectable, sedate etc. He doesn't like changes, and very rarely thinks about sex. Mondeo is for young professional. Who doesn't like to spend time in home, likes to work, and have fun. Like to learn and enjoy new things. And likes to have sex with his wife. For me both Passat and Mondeo are very good cars.
SwPiotrek Passat, Mondeo, Insignia and Elantra are all dreadful cars. If you are driving any of these it is because it is your company car (they all just shout SALES REP). There are far better cars to get for your money, if you do not need a big car like these. These are fleet cars, always have been. If you buy one out of choice, I think you need your head read. No young professional drives a Passat. They drive A3 Saloon, 3 Series, A4, C- Class, CLA, or at a push , a V60 or an IS
Monky So what, if the Mondeo and Paasat can rival or even beat the luxury badege bosses then why not get one, This years world car of the year is B8 Passat not the C Class,nor A3,nor 3 series,... Also UK is not the only place on earth,on India,China,Malaysia etc people think Passat as a luxury car,and from my experience the New B8 Passat specially with the 2.0 Biturbo TDi and AWD is worlds best saloon,
To me the exterior of the Passat it is so boring and it is saying that the driver is already using Prostamol and Viagra... Interior better then the last generation.
I do not care about the brand if it is a good looking car. For example, Mazda 6 is gorgeous, so are other cars. Beauty is in the eye of tbe beholder and for me the design of the new Passat on the exterior is just plain boring. The shape of the headlights (not taking about interior LED part) is a copy of the Dacia Logan 2. Btw, I do not drive BMW although they make some nice cars.
I have to agree with you! There really horrible looking I had the 2011 model along with some of my other friends with the same model! Very unreliable with 2 of my friends and my one breaking down twice! None of the problems covered under the crap warranty! Peugeot 508 is a much better choice in all aspects!
Looks the very epitome of lazy modern car design. A subtle revamp, which to me makes it even more nondescript than the outgoing model. What's it like to drive? I'm guessing the drive probably matches the looks, Germans are very efficient when it comes to this type of detail. Bob mentions the Mazda 6 which he says is a tad pricey. Seriously? You start adding up the options on the Passat and this just isn't the case, and the 6 is FUN to drive. If I was looking for a car in this sector I wouldn't give the Passat a look in.
Im not a fan of the Passat. Driving it feels like drowning in wallpaper paste, it's so boring. I also don't think it looks like anything. It's just a box with frogeyes at the front. Good car yes, but not cool, stylish or fun. Mazda 6 or Mondeo for me if i was buying one of these. The 3-series falls also out of the equation, because it's simply too ugly.
Vicariously Thru-Kay Simplistic is often handsome or pretty (Alfa 156 for instance), but the Passat is simplistic in all the wrong ways in my opinion. It's just a box on wheels, the German Toyota Avensis basically.
I owned a b7 and there put together with cheap parts from third world countries,,pure and utter rubbish and I have looked at the b8 its actually made of even cheaper parts,not even made in china parts its parts made in countries unheard of...any other car and I mean any other car would be better,,,
For me Passat is boring and ugly. Same as Mondeo, but last one is less ugly. It is a fact that Passat is quiet and solid but please don't promote it as a beautiful car. Beautiful cars are more rare such as: AR 159, Citroen C6, Jaguar XE, BMW 6 series, Maserati Ghibli, New Reanult Espace, previous BMW E66. Listed are maybe exotic so I propose instead of Passat and Mondeo cars such as Laguna, 508, even Insignia and Mazda 6. Passat and Mondeo are associated with boring lifeless people who make default choices all the time.
g00dfeeling Passat and Mondeo are not at all meant for boring people, the mondeo handles a tad better than Passat and its probably the 2nd best handling FWD car after Mazda 6Also Mazda 6 handling is due to its less kerb weight Ford and Mazda has almost 99% similar steering and suspension setup but Mazda uses cheap steel in lower parts of car, its not a bad thing cuz it keeps weight like 100-120 kg less than Mondeo But the bad side is cabin noise, I can safely say that Mazda 6 has the noisiest cabin of all sedans of this group,
Please dont tar all Passat drivers with the same brush, some of us dont have a choice. Personally i'd go for the Mazda 6 over this miserable, bland, dull, hateful piece of crap, sadly we get lumbered with them for work.
No the ride quality is awful, very jerky and hard, I never looked forward to driving it, and I hate the automatic breaking system especially on cruise control, you cannot turn it off, I always turn off the stupid engine turn off at lights, bloody pointless and wears out your starter motor. I sold mine it was just annoying gadgets, rubbish ride, not smooth at all, a lot of vw crap on infotainment system you have to pay out for, so no i did, nt I ripped mine out and put in a proper system which is way way way better, no i don, t rate this car, glad I sold it.

I've covered 180,000mi in my 2019 estate. Adaptive cruise control is brilliant, I disabled auto start stop with VCDS (every car has it now), the dynamic chassis shocks are super comfortable and the infotainment system is very good. The quality inside and the reliability is top notch also.

The back end looks like a Peugeot and that's the biggest insult I can imagine! Drives excellently though, according to my workmate.

I think the new Mazda 6 Facelift should be looked at. The interior is up there......And many say it's better than the Mondeo

What did that article prove,I am talking about how the 6 was born, the 6 was born under the Ford umbrella just like how Duratec of Ford was born under Mazdas Umbrella,
Both had a very happy life and partnerership was one of most successful partnership between brands,
The Fusion or Mondeos CD platform was a derived platform that was used in old Ford Sierras,the Sierra split into the Mondeo and a CD chassis, the CD chassis as we know were known with many code names and was shared by Ford and Mazda is different applications,
In USA Ford didnt use CD platform because they had the old s80 platform which was cheap and had lot of strength inbuilt into it,
The CD platform grew in different directions in Ford and Mazdas care, Ford developed it into the CD4 while Mazda developed it into the 6 chassis, still if one inspects both these chassis the structure is 99% same,its just the bindings,break points,limp points etc that changed to suit both brands special needs, otherwise both are born from Fords old Sierra based chassis,
Its just like saying Ford used Volvos 5 pot to power the RS MKII but there are purists who say its a Volvo motor but in reality Ford modified it to its absolute limits to make it into RS,Still I wud say its a VOLVO motor,
Just like that the current Mondeo and 6 both have super identical chassis but built differently by both brands to suit their needs.

The current vehicles are totally different and developed in house by the two companies and are quite different and have nothing in common. Saying that they are 99% the same is, I'm sorry, quite idiotic, since they are totally different in both technology, materials, engineering and manufacturing. I had the chance to be present at both vehicles presentation and have seen the bare platform on display, and I can tell you they are totally different. You can find infinite number of information about this on the internet. So, to sum it up for you, the current Mazda 6, the 2013 model is a completely new, in house developed car by Mazda and has absolutely nothing in common with Ford.

I have a Golf Mk7 find the seat very hard and the door bins are lined on only one side so things rattle in the bins unless you put in tissue paper or whatever to stop the rattle and the CD changer takes up half the glovebox so little storage space is this the same on the new Passat.The wipers dont clear the windscreen right either they leave a film of water on the windscreen think this is a common problem with the new golf.I feel more detail should be given to the points i raise when looking at these cars as they can be very annoying.I would advise people to buy Ford the Mazda 6 best of all VW Ireland give very poor customer care if any.

VRT is a tax that's applied in Ireland to any car that's imported. It allows you to have an Irish licence plate on the car. All cars are imported into Ireland and there's laws against diving a car on a foreign plate so as you can see it's a monopoly and should be banned but it makes a lot of Tax money.

Had a Mazda 323f, it leaked water,like the titanic,needed suspension links every 3 months,went to look at Mazda premacy to replace it,some had rusty wheel arches at 4 and a half years.
Engine is shit. Timing chains snap. You can buy it if you're one of those people that lease cars for 2 yoers, then upgrade to new one. Otherwise stay away from it!

Passat B8 is a car for 50-60 year old male. Which is respectable, sedate etc. He doesn't like changes, and very rarely thinks about sex.
Mondeo is for young professional. Who doesn't like to spend time in home, likes to work, and have fun. Like to learn and enjoy new things. And likes to have sex with his wife.
For me both Passat and Mondeo are very good cars.

SwPiotrek Passat, Mondeo, Insignia and Elantra are all dreadful cars. If you are driving any of these it is because it is your company car (they all just shout SALES REP). There are far better cars to get for your money, if you do not need a big car like these. These are fleet cars, always have been.
If you buy one out of choice, I think you need your head read.

Passat is the best car in the class for people that don't need to lengthen the penis. For men with small dick is BMW.
I do not care about the brand if it is a good looking car. For example, Mazda 6 is gorgeous, so are other cars. Beauty is in the eye of tbe beholder and for me the design of the new Passat on the exterior is just plain boring. The shape of the headlights (not taking about interior LED part) is a copy of the Dacia Logan 2. Btw, I do not drive BMW although they make some nice cars.

I have to agree with you! There really horrible looking I had the 2011 model along with some of my other friends with the same model! Very unreliable with 2 of my friends and my one breaking down twice! None of the problems covered under the crap warranty! Peugeot 508 is a much better choice in all aspects!
Looks the very epitome of lazy modern car design. A subtle revamp, which to me makes it even more nondescript than the outgoing model. What's it like to drive? I'm guessing the drive probably matches the looks, Germans are very efficient when it comes to this type of detail. Bob mentions the Mazda 6 which he says is a tad pricey. Seriously? You start adding up the options on the Passat and this just isn't the case, and the 6 is FUN to drive. If I was looking for a car in this sector I wouldn't give the Passat a look in.
Im not a fan of the Passat. Driving it feels like drowning in wallpaper paste, it's so boring. I also don't think it looks like anything. It's just a box with frogeyes at the front. Good car yes, but not cool, stylish or fun. Mazda 6 or Mondeo for me if i was buying one of these. The 3-series falls also out of the equation, because it's simply too ugly.

Simplistic is often handsome or pretty (Alfa 156 for instance), but the Passat is simplistic in all the wrong ways in my opinion. It's just a box on wheels, the German Toyota Avensis basically.

I owned a b7 and there put together with cheap parts from third world countries,,pure and utter rubbish and I have looked at the b8 its actually made of even cheaper parts,not even made in china parts its parts made in countries unheard of...any other car and I mean any other car would be better,,,
For me Passat is boring and ugly. Same as Mondeo, but last one is less ugly. It is a fact that Passat is quiet and solid but please don't promote it as a beautiful car. Beautiful cars are more rare such as: AR 159, Citroen C6, Jaguar XE, BMW 6 series, Maserati Ghibli, New Reanult Espace, previous BMW E66. Listed are maybe exotic so I propose instead of Passat and Mondeo cars such as Laguna, 508, even Insignia and Mazda 6. Passat and Mondeo are associated with boring lifeless people who make default choices all the time.
The XE and 508 are beautiful cars, I would agree with you there.
g00dfeeling Passat and Mondeo are not at all meant for boring people, the mondeo handles a tad better than Passat and its probably the 2nd best handling FWD car after Mazda 6Also Mazda 6 handling is due to its less kerb weight
Ford and Mazda has almost 99% similar steering and suspension setup but Mazda uses cheap steel in lower parts of car, its not a bad thing cuz it keeps weight like 100-120 kg less than Mondeo
But the bad side is cabin noise, I can safely say that Mazda 6 has the noisiest cabin of all sedans of this group,

No the ride quality is awful, very jerky and hard, I never looked forward to driving it, and I hate the automatic breaking system especially on cruise control, you cannot turn it off, I always turn off the stupid engine turn off at lights, bloody pointless and wears out your starter motor. I sold mine it was just annoying gadgets, rubbish ride, not smooth at all, a lot of vw crap on infotainment system you have to pay out for, so no i did, nt I ripped mine out and put in a proper system which is way way way better, no i don, t rate this car, glad I sold it.

I’d disagree on the ride. I have both a Passat and an Audi A8, and the Passat is very close in terms of ride quality and general comfort.
I've covered 180,000mi in my 2019 estate. Adaptive cruise control is brilliant, I disabled auto start stop with VCDS (every car has it now), the dynamic chassis shocks are super comfortable and the infotainment system is very good. The quality inside and the reliability is top notch also.
