Jon, sometimes I think that maybe it's healthier and easier to eat a different varieties of crops rather than just one type. I'm Italian, I was raised with pasta and bread at each meal. Our traditional food is wheat based but our ancestors ate corn bread and corn based meals such as polenta, millet and other types of grains. I've been living in Asia since 2014 and I love rice. My favourite types are brown and basmati rice. I do believe, nowadays, that we can diversify our diet with potatoes, yams, millet, corn and so on because it is much healthier to eat like this and perhaps better for the land if we use permaculture but I'm not sure how to grow grains with permaculture. Life is easy and yummy!

you can look op gabe browns ranch here on youtube, the methods he uses can also be used on a smaller or less industrialized scale. I think something like this can be a very good strategy for rice, corn, potatoes, (so basically for the stuff that normally requires a lot of unsustainable managed land)

I do not grow rice .. but farmers in the delta area of Arkansas do. I agree with what you say about thinking of ways to make farming easy. I am wondering what you recommend for raising fish .. what kind is best etc. Where I live in Arkansas may not work .. but it might help us learn more. Monsanto's education has programmed children in school that life is hard and chemicals are easy! How wrong they are .. bc there is "No Life with Poison!"

I don't know the name of the fishes in English but the herbivores fish we always cut grass pile up at the edge of the pond. Don't spread them out in the water it will make water go bad the fishes will die. Make a high pile they will eat from the bottom. They grow a little slower than feeding them with factory food but we don't need to invest money

    • @MerwinARTist

@@JonJandaiLifeisEasy Thank you Jon, for your reply. I have been keeping "gold-fish" in two of my small ponds .. most people here do not eat them .. but use them for "bait-fish". Tilapia can be raised here during the summer months .. but then they die off when the cooler weather comes unless they are kept inside in a temperature controlled tank (money). I have two larger ponds with bass, crappie, & bluegill. We have a small pond plant that is called "duck-weed" here and it grows quickly on the surface of a pond. I have a small side pond where I grow duck-weed to feed my gold-fish. I am thinking about getting some Amur .. which are supposed to be good to eat as well as cleaning ponds of plants.

Wow this is what I'm talking about! 😃😃😃 We're the same thought!
I was thinking if I have rice field I will definitely do the same. Becus I discovered that if insect/pest is in rice field it is your signal that ur rice field is weak or sick bat if your rice is healthy there's no insects/pest shown in there. My thought is if insects attack ur rice field why don't u cut it so that they will stay away! Or let the birds do their work, most of the farmers hate birds to their rice fields. Actually I found out that the rice are not easily die as we've thought, as long as they have root in there they will survive!

I think the answer is to create regional economies.. produce a final product locally. There are more efficient ways to growing rice, I think India shows some good examples. I am shocked that farmers in Cambodia do not even use seed drills and I think the same applies to Thailand. Why ? In terms of the composition of the soil, how many farmers know what their pH level is and what is the % composition of their soil ? Why do farmers in Thailand burn off their fields when the residue can be used to make compost on an industrial scale. How many farms in Thailand are using drip irrigation for the rice ? I could go on.. but someone, please explain why farmers do not adopt these simple measures ?

While this sounds good for weed control, I got to know about persons who does nothing to control weeds in rice field and the variety they grow is old traditional family of rice (like Katuyanam etc which grows for 6 months) in delta region of Tamilnadu, Chennai. From their experience they are saying that it is not reducing the yield as well. Is it something people tried in Thailand and are you aware if there is any difference in this approach or is it something to be understood along with local situation?
