What would I change on the ND Miata? Having owned one for a few months now, there isn't a whole lot I would change. Mine is a Club with the Brembo/BBS package. First, I would really like to see a backup camera made available. While in most circumstances it isn't needed, I feel that with the top up, rearward visibility is severely limited. I would also appreciate a bit less wind noise when the top is up. Mazda also really needs to add Carplay/Android Auto support. Being in hot and humid south Florida, I have added a ventilated car seat cover along with some added lumbar support. Now, what about performance? I have to say that I am so very satisfied with the stock power that my car puts out. It has enough linear torque to actually skip gears when driving casually around town while at the same time it is so pleasing to be able to got WOT and leave that same traffic in the rear view mirror when I feel like it. I have had cars like a Gen 5 Camaro SS and a 135 try to pull on me. At the end of a quarter mile, they are certainly faster, but on the street and during a short burst of acceleration, none could leave me. My point is that the ND Miata drivetrain really strikes an almost perfect balance on the street, giving you enough power to keep up with traffic when driven casually and at the same time you can use all that power almost any time you want. I have had faster cars (12-second 3rd Gen Z/28, Stage 1 Golf R, S4) but none put a smile on my face and are as satisfying as this Miata. What is interesting is that Good-Win has a 50 WHP bolt on kit (header, exhaust, tune) that would obviously make the Miata faster, but I find myself asking "to what end?" Perhaps I am just getting older, but for driving on the street, a faster Miata would basically be just for street racing bragging rights. Sure, if I am going to track it, then more is better. But for now, I don't desire a faster Miata. I think I would like to see a bit less body roll and a slightly lower ride height. Finally, I would love the ability to turn off traction control but keep stability control on. Right now it seems like you can only have both on or both off. The transmission and shifter are perfect, as far as I am concerned. There is just enough of a "crunchy" mechanical feeling to let you know that the shifter is actually attached to the transmission and you are really doing something mechanical when you change gears. Before I got the ND, I test drove the GTI and Golf R and both had shifters that felt so disconnected from the transmission, almost to the point that they felt like a video game. Not with the Miata. The Miata can literally change my mood as driving it always puts a smile on my face. Few material things make me happy, but this car is certainly one of them.
Great post. I've owned a lot of cars in my day. Sports cars and luxury. None have made me want to take the long way home or just do a u-turn and loop around again like this car. I hope that desire and love of this vehicle sticks around for a while. The purchase was worth every penny.
ND owner. I bought the GT (in soul red as in your demo car), for me it is just a road car (body roll and all). The one thing I really wish Mazda had done to make my specific car perfect is the LSD... not available in GT's. I also agree with you on the Manual transmission discussion. I put my chips firmly in both camps, sports-car:manual, sedan:automatic. Great episode.
I love mine, the handling is fantastic and the MGP(high of 41, avg 35) is excellent. Recently ran the Dragon Trail 129 in NC, What a Scream! Everything MotoMan says is True! Buy one and join a Miata club and go driving!
Did a few things to my ND Club, making it more sure footed in the bends, upgraded the brakes also, and finally, I will be adding a bit more oomph. 200hp with around the same torque figure is the goal for mine, and shedding off weight. I might even add a roll bar down the road, but that's if I'm planning to replace my Focus ST from the tracks with this. :)
just wanted to also comment and say thanks for doing all that it takes to put on such a great show, I forgot to make mention of my appreciation for the show in my earlier comments.
I owned three Lotus Elise in my live and ended up in a MIata. The ND is such a good, fun car for very little money. And don't forget it comes with a water proved roof. No more towels in the cabin for me :-) Cheers Oliver
Thank you thank you thank you for standing up for manual transmissions... I've always thought it was such a waste having paddles in a performance car.... Grrrrr!!!
Had my UK icon mx5 model for six months imho it won world car of the year for a reason I prefer the 1.5 over the 2.0 as it suits my local country lanes better balance wise.
Go for the turbo or supercharger the V8 will ruin the handling over the front (under steer). So you can keep the handling and get a few ponies. Don't forget to make it reliable it's a Mazda not a Lotus:)
I just sold my ND after 8mo of ownership. Amazingly fun like everybody says, but the Mazda3 I traded in for it was just so much better as a daily. Back in a 3 now and so glad I switched back!
+Ariel Dumagan My original 3 I had was a 3s GT and now I have the 3i Sport. The S was definitely much quicker but both are fun to drive and comfortable. The WRX is so different. Im sure it would be much more fun but it looks like a Corolla lol.
10:23 Thank you. There is something about that human interaction with a vehicle that has a manual transmission. My dream car is a lotus, but I can get this car new for about 30k. So my next car will be this MX-5 club :)
Another great review, Motoman! I'm waiting for the grand touring club sport. All the safety features: adaptive LED headlights, safety features: land departure warning, front collision warning and bose headrest speakers. 🦅🦅🇺🇸
Maybe add a centrifugal supercharger on the RF MX-5 and it will maintain itself closer to the 50/50 lol. Maybe around 2500-2600lbs, but it'll still be light enough with more power. That's what I would do to make the Miata better is ever I will own one one day.
2:27 I went for a test drive, over a couple of local curvies. Then I rented one for a day and ran it over every nearby pass I could think of. And then I went through months of hell until the first used one appeared on the market -- and bought it. I intentionally got a 1.5 l. It's great on the flat but gutless on grades. So you drop TWO gears and all is right with the world.
I'm just going to get the Fiat 124. I know a lot of reviewers have been giving it shit, but the fact is with some simple modifications the Fiat looks, sounds and accelerates better than the ND miata ever could without dumping thousands onto it.
thanks for answering my question, that is one of the best features of your show is that we can interact with someone who is high level and who actually loves cars. 2nd me I would keep the miata factory because I believe it might be a future collectible and 3rd I personally don't do snapchat only because I have the 3 main social media outlets. I think that it maybe a good idea for you to do so because its puts a name face and voice to the people who follow the show but also it ma be a great way to interact in the future
I have the mazda miata nd club and my transmission already went out and I have around 5,000 miles. Addicting car to drive and can't wait to get it back from mazda.
I've just experience a strange whinging sound from the 3rd gear transmission in my earlier model ND (Nov/15) but when i went into mazda as still under warranty they said it was a normal sound. Did they give you a detail explanation?
I have not driven the car yet, so it’s a bit of a guessing game for me. If it is as well balanced as you’ve pointed out along with many others, then it is fine. If I want to up the ante, I would go for the M2 or the Cayman.
Because of your enthusiasm in this video, I must ask: for under $35k, would the MX5 be your first choice to buy for yourself? Or is there another enthusiast car on sale currently or soon to be on sale you'd pick?
Good question, so much so, that I would like to address in an upcoming #AskMotoManTV segment . . . Could you post this to Twitter or Facebook using the Hashtag #AskMotoManTV ?
Auto box's are a small promotion of sales in Europe. But are growing now they are not so poor. I have a 6 speed auto and it's great for lazy drive on motorways (just done 4200miles across France and Spain) and works good enough when I go into manual and have a spirited drive around the UK countryside. But it's no real manual connection feeling.
I completely regarding the manuals & the taxes. But I'm conflicted about CAFÉ, in one hand we are getting more fuel efficient yet more powerful cutting edge cars (an A45 AMG makes more power than a x55 AMG from just 10 years ago with half the engine) but in return we get added complexity which means trouble down the road & more importantly for me: Less V8s!!! Maserati will phase em out soon, Porsche is reserving em for the Cayenne\Panamera Turbo models only, BMW is rumored to make em exclusive to Ms & the 750Li, I won't be surprised if Ford ditched the 5.0 for an Ecoboost V6 & poor Lincoln doesn't have a single V8 in their line up. I'm holding judgment until I see the Panamera in person. Its definitely much better than the old one though. And I completely agree regarding the Center console… they just had to ruin it. On the upside, no more fake buttons! I was definitely going to say a V8 conversion, but then I was curious to look up the prices & Holy Smokes Miata Batman! $49,995 for the conversion alone!!!!! Throw in a donor ND & we are looking into close to $80k!!!! Might as well get a Corvette, a C63, a used Viper or a Cadillac V!!! So I'll say Center-Quad-Pipes exhaust (ATS V style) & a fat rear tires (hmm will 275s fit? Lol) As for Snapchat, everyone I met only use it for selifes -__- As always, excellent work M! And thank you for taking the time to answer my question :)
base club spec and doing flyin miata little big brake front and rear and some springs and the hush o matic exhaust system. That would be ideal for me and the factory club wheels look great and the wilwoods are actually lighter then the Brembos and use common pads so much cheaper to maintain.
Hey Barrett! Funny, this question is a theme - similar one posted above but the option was Boxster S. I think I am going to move this one to the next #AskMotoManTV . . .
Super charge the Mazda with methanol cooling...I hope someone will copy what Kawasaki did to their K2 motorcycle's super charger soon, what a game changer that thing is! You can stick a fork in SnapChat, IG just killed them with the new Stories feature. Now to address your talk on manual vs. auto/twin clutch transmissions. When are you going to test the new Shelby 350R because it has a Tremec in it, and it is especially conducive to fast hard shifts I hear too! Or maybe the P1GTR (street legal version) could be some fun too...just saying...

I always find it somewhat funny when US drivers talk about transmissions the way they do, and there's why: If I went down to the street right now and walked one kilometer, I wouldn't not find ONE single automatic car. Ok, maybe one. So when someone arises the question, is manual going to disappear? I can't but chuckle. It's certainly doing well here (Spain and EU in general), and it'll do for a loooong while. About modifying the ND... I'd go small. Suspension, maybe a small engine tune-up, but I wouldn't upset its natural balance with another engine.
By your name, I'm guessing you're Spanish or from south America, and really the US has one of the smallest manual transmissions market share. Most European and Southamerican markets are more to the manual transmission side. I lived in Europe for a few months and I think the MT is far from dead there!
As a European living in the US, it is unfortunately a real thing: there is no longer a single manual Audi sold in the US, Mercedes is the same way I believe, BMW still has a few but several combinations are impossible (drive with manual)
I can see one of the plagues of modern cars in your video already - expansive center console which impedes your right knee. I see you could not turn the steering wheel far to the right without removing your right hand off the wheel (and thus weakening your grip at the worst possible moment) because your knuckles were hitting your right thigh. That is the result of bad driving position caused by the center console. That is a pity. I am 6'3", so alas, that would have been even more pronounced. Too bad, as I love small, fun cars. BTW, I agree 100% with your rant on manual transmissions. I don't care if CVT or DCT is more efficient in every day driving. Take the car onto a mountain twisty, and that CVT can choke on my stick as far as I'm concerned.
Here's my question. For a while now, I've been looking into a used Boxster. This MX-5 looks interesting. So, the question is new MX-5 or used Boxster S?
go new mx-5 , youll get alot more for your buck than the 2005 boxsters(and they definitely have not aged well) the mx-5 may be a bit slower but i think the overall looks and stuff will more than make up for it.
Meant serious:you know the different repaircosts?I own the miata nd since two month with garantie by mazda. And he is right, drive one,you buy it.Porsche sells only name and image.Buy the little nippon thing, said by a german! :-)
They did too much to the body of that Abarth. I wish they kept it similar but with more power, perhaps a turbocharger, some side skirts, and a couple Abarth badges. The 124 Abarth looks like an outdated version of the Mazda ND from the front.
pick up the club and skip the Brembos and BBS. you can do the flying miata "little big brake" kit for $800 front and rear save 6+lbs over stock (3lb overs the bremos) per corner of unsprung weight and they use more accessable and common pads. MUCH cheaper to replace.
I have a 2001 NB Miata with 95k on the clock (original owner) and recently sat in and test drove a ND. I could not wait to get back into my 2001! Why? When you close the door on the ND, there is a "rattle" in the door (if the window is down). The door sills are painted instead of materiel (just looks cheap). The ugly display always sticking up in the middle of the dash! The engine they have chosen doesn't look or sound anywhere near as nice as my '01! Those mountable cup holders...........please! At 6'4", I was expecting to enjoy the extra leg room that they are said to have. It was not there! I know there are many that like the new ND, even with reported transmission problems, but unless mine is wrecked or blown up, I hope to have it for at least another 15 years.
That makes sense considering the extra body work. It is kind of surprising that the Abarth doesn't have a bit more power considering the turbo and straight pipe exhaust. I don't really get too excited by track numbers, if I'm tracking it there is very little from the factory that is remaining. Suspension will be swapped for Ohlins, wider and probably shorter wheels, Wilwood Brakes,Blackbird roll bar, suspension and engine tuning. Basically what I've done to my NC. If I buy an ND it will be for street driving... well at least for a couple weeks.
Thanks for the reminder . . . I have been on the road non stop as of late but do need to nag the folks at BMW for a MANUAL M2 to drag out to the canyons . . . First call today:)
Thanks for the reminder . . . I have been on the road non stop as of late but do need to nag the folks at BMW for a MANUAL M2 to drag out to the canyons . . . First call today:)
I'll keep my N/A 3.5L 2004 G35 S sedan for as long as I can, screw the CAFE standards! The glorious N/A motors of this world are being silenced forever, screw the establishment and their agendas!!!! Who's with me?!?!
OF COURSE there's this guy. I even call it out right in this episode (th-cam.com/video/qeCQYRHpVAM/w-d-xo.htmlm5s). There's only SIX other episodes we produced where one can see the car on the road (th-cam.com/video/gyAhz8fYn_E/w-d-xo.html), in a studio (th-cam.com/video/aMIu8aMjTFI/w-d-xo.html), with its engineers (th-cam.com/video/VwPmXfzRBMo/w-d-xo.html), with its designers (th-cam.com/video/tn1wFxyghjY/w-d-xo.html) and even completely down to just it's chassis (th-cam.com/video/LMyoaICX5Fk/w-d-xo.html) but there's you where that is just not good enough. Sir, you *clearly* don't understand the purpose of these #AskMotoManTV segments. Please do me a favor and don't return to this channel again. Have a nice day.
I find this hilarious, if the car was "that perfect" then why does he want to screw with suspension and engine? So not perfect? or maybe it is perfect, maybe he just has some repressed childhood memories. There's no need to turn yobo w a pizza face with baseball cap backward trying to "rice" other dimwits with 50mil stickers & a fart-cannons. Leave the Miata alone, it's fine, it's fun, period. PS:99% or Boxter/Cayman or 911 do keep the car as is or aka "perfect" 'cause they are fine they way they are, no BS needed.

Dave Ramsey reference instantly made you my new fav car reviewer!
Dave is THE man. I don't say this lightly. Without Dave Ramsey, there would have be no MotoManTV . . .

Hey Oliver . . . OH I know the less than water proof roof issue WELL . . . :)
MotoMan, Please do the Mercedes 6*6 AMG. Your the best journalist out there that can explaining what's going on that machine.
Thank you thank you thank you for standing up for manual transmissions... I've always thought it was such a waste having paddles in a performance car.... Grrrrr!!!

Zach Robinett May I ask what the issue was?
They had a known transmission issue on the early production cars. Shouldn't be an issue any longer. Totally covered under warranty.
I've just experience a strange whinging sound from the 3rd gear transmission in my earlier model ND (Nov/15) but when i went into mazda as still under warranty they said it was a normal sound. Did they give you a detail explanation?
You're a legend. Would absolutely love to have a conversation with you on cars in real life. The knowledge and experience.
Would you buy the hardtop?
I'm stuck between Abarth and GT MX5. Which is more livable?
Good episode well done , interesting.

Tough call . . . However, for me, I generally do used to avoid the early depreciation.
+MotoManTV well, to get close to a new MX-5 it'd have to be a well used Boxster. Like 10-15 years old.
go new mx-5 , youll get alot more for your buck than the 2005 boxsters(and they definitely have not aged well) the mx-5 may be a bit slower but i think the overall looks and stuff will more than make up for it.
The 124 Abarth looks like an outdated version of the Mazda ND from the front.
that glare though!
What is ND?
Brembos from factory on this Miata? Awesome.
With BBS as well, extra pack on top of the club trim.
Yeah, but this Clubsport model gets quite expensive very fast.
Agreed, the club if you really think you need the LSD, other wise the Sport is fine
pick up the club and skip the Brembos and BBS. you can do the flying miata "little big brake" kit for $800 front and rear save 6+lbs over stock (3lb overs the bremos) per corner of unsprung weight and they use more accessable and common pads.
I know there are many that like the new ND, even with reported transmission problems, but unless mine is wrecked or blown up, I hope to have it for at least another 15 years.
to each their own i LOVE LOVE LOVE the ND. The NB is probably my second favorite but I am spoiled by new car technology.
I agree there are benefits to both. ENJOY!
hi, motoman. i am buying a super car and i am stuck in a dilemma. which car should i buy
p1
or
lamborghini hurrican spyder
LP turntable vinyl has way better sound quality than digital. This is a fact. just saying
M to the X with a 5...
This or the Fiat 124 Abarth?
This all day long. Reason is very simple: The design of the 124 is a mess.
Also proven on the track that the ND is faster than the 124 Abarth. I forgot if that was R&T or C&D that did the test @ NJMP Lightning. :)
I hear you. :)
MM -- are we gonna see you in the M2 in the canyons?
Thanks for the reminder . . . I have been on the road non stop as of late but do need to nag the folks at BMW for a MANUAL M2 to drag out to the canyons . . . First call today:)

MotoManTV Thanks!!!
I'll keep my N/A 3.5L 2004 G35 S sedan for as long as I can, screw the CAFE standards! The glorious N/A motors of this world are being silenced forever, screw the establishment and their agendas!!!! Who's with me?!?!
get a kinetix velocity intake manifold if you want to really enjoy that 3.5vq
Am I the only one that doesnt like the new Panamera rear end?
i want to see the car.u talk about 25 min.let me see the car
Yes chef.came on don't be serious i love this channel. Aurevoir
Why did this come up in my v8 miata search is stupid
is there cigarette lighter?
No, no cigarette lighter. However, there is a 12v power source down under the dash in the passenger footwell.
FM FOX COILOVERS
BRAKES
16X9 WHEELS
CARBON FIBER ROOF
TURBO/S.C
This guy clearly doesn't understand why audiophiles use turntables.
Ultimate mx5 would be a rotary, full stop. Not turbo.
PS:99% or Boxter/Cayman or 911 do keep the car as is or aka "perfect" 'cause they are fine they way they are, no BS needed.
too bad it looks so meh... like 4/10
