Would love to know any hot tips you have about watercolour paint and how to get good opaque-ish layers! What brand(s) do you use?

Zeke's Lunchbox 1) LOVE your art and your channel. 2) tube watercolors are always more pigmented than rewetted pans 3) My M Graham's are the most opaque-ish, heavily pigmented paints I've tried so far that don't have that chalky opaque look. (I do very much enjoy my Primas though!) Unfortunately, I'm not sure how accessible M Graham is on your side of the globe. ✌️ Much love from the USA

I have recently bought a few tubes of Shinhan pass hybrid watercolour/gouache they are awesome i have them dried in a pallette, they re-wet easily and because they are hybrids I can use them thick and creamy or watered down depending on what I want to achieve, they have some beautiful colours the only problem is I now want them all lol other than that I have a few tubes of Windsor and newton, I tried Arteza gouache but I’m a bit meh about it dried in pans and too lazy to get tubes out all the time and I have a set of white nights watercolours which have some great colours and are pretty cheap too :-) x

Zeke's Lunchbox You actually don’t want to have opaque colours in watercolour! This can make your paintings lack depth, vibrancy and become muddy. I personally use mostly Sennelier watercolours since they’re made for lots of layers and almost look like they glow! You can get a lot of depth from them 💚

I am by no means an expert but just generally enthusiastic when it come to watercolours. I have recently been dabbling with liquid watercolours and have been loving them, particularly the vibrancy they have. They also come is some amazing colours. Dr PH Martin are really good but can be a bit pricey. I bought the primary colours and a couple more just to indulge to keep the overall cost down. I got colours from his Hydrus range as they are light fast, but there are also the Radiance Watercolour and Bombay Ink ranges too.

If your aim is opaque color then watercolor isn’t really going to get you there on its own. Either mix your watercolors with White gouache or use gouache paint instead.😜 That’s what it’s made for basically, Opaque watercolor.💜🎨

Sometimes when using watercolor and you want a deeper skin tone, I use sepia as an under painting and then go in and use whatever color you want to use after it dries since watercolors are a translucent medium.

Hiya..I am just re learning my Watercolours..you can get beautiful rich dense colours with more depth in them by layering..it’s not to much in layering different colours always it’s about slightly different shades of the same colour..it then builds up a beautiful depth..I have been watching a lot of watercolour tutorials lately to remind myself as I have not painted for about 25 yrs..it’s a great medium ,also gouache which is more poached is another good waterbased product..practice makes us able to master all we want..Please don’t give up on Watercolour as I think you will love it with practice ..I used to ,very much ..Your work is beautiful and would really suit it too ,the best part of it is the way you can add so many colours into your work and make it really pop ..and now there are some beautiful colours..when I first started they were boring lol ..Keep up the good work and have fun 😀

  • @M4rteevee

Hey, I’m an oil painter and for my skin tones I usually use titanium white, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue. With those colours I can have any skin tone I want from dark to light. I then tweak that base colour with more ultramarine, burnt umber, cadmium yellow, or cadmium red if I feel like I need it colder or warmer. I’m not too experienced with water colour though, you might able to achieve the same thing with the same palette?? (without the white of course). Kelly Eddington is a watercolourist on TH-cam, her work is very different from your but she has a tutorial on how to paint skin tones. Maybe you can check it out and apply some of her techniques to your work.

This is the first time I've watched a video of yours. I loved it! You are very talented. I started off my watercolor journey with Prima and Jane Davenport and I thought I loved them until I started trying other water color brands. Kuretake (who has a huge set for like $28 USD) have beautiful colors and they weren't chalky like the Prima and JD ones I thought I loved so much. I seriously started loving watercolors once I tried those and started trying starter sets of more expensive brands. 1st being Winsor Newton, which were great. 2nd being QOR which are a bit different than I expected after W&N but I've gotten used to them. 3rd, and absolute FAVORITE ever on the planet, Daniel Smith. They are 1000% worth the expense. Love, love, love them!
Can't wait to browse through your channel to check out more of your work. I love your sketchbook format. I wish so very much that I could break the feeling that I need to make a masterpiece on every single page and use it for what it's meant for. Studying and playing.

I use Derwent Inktense pencils for deeper tones. Because they're ink, they won't reactivate or shift once they're dry so you can work over the top mich easier

I’ve been working with watercolors for some time and its (kind of) the same as layering acrylics, but with more water. Although the pigment ends up being really translucent on the first layers once you start building them up you’ll notice more saturated colors, or you can start off with a very dark color and just add a tiny bit of water for it to run well on the paper
Btw love your sketchbook its super pretty :)

If you want super saturated watercolors, you have to check out Mission Gold! They're my favorite! Next would be Qor, and after that would be M.Graham. Be careful with M.Graham though, they don't set up in a palette in warm environments.

For a happy medium between the transluscence of water color and the opaqueness of acrylics, I tend to use gouache. Aside from watercolor, it's my favorite medium because it allows you a lot of freedom
Oh, also, you can get more pigment out of watercolor if you buy tubes instead of using pans!

I know prima has a watercolor set for skin tones. The only thing that it does have some repeat shades from the tropical palette. But if watercolor is a struggle for getting deeper skin tones it wouldn’t hurt to look into the palette!! 🥰🥰🥰

I love this video 💙. Thank you for sharing. I use acrylics and mixed media. Like you I’ve found watercolors difficult to layer but I know that a lot of artists do. It takes practice and good paper 😀 ( 300gsm) to get the skills. Lots of love and btw I love your stickers 💙💛💚

I have that same prob with watercolor. Some people love the transparency/lightness. But that's why we love acrylics. We want that opaque/bright colors that didn't fade when dry. I had to add other mediums to saturate the watercolor too.
Though I agree with other commenters that we need the expensive, professional artist brand to get the good dark watercolors....

I have the same problem with painting deeper tones or just trying to get more saturated colours when using watercolours. Figuring out the water to pigment ratio will help. A TH-camr called The Mind of Watercolor has a beginners playlist and on there you’ll find a video on water to pigment ratio.

If you can only go up to two layers with your watercolor, I think it's an issue with the paper. You usually should be able to layer up a lot before issues rise. Also, Japanese watercolors like the kuretake are more opaque than western ones. I've never tried those myself but there are tons of reviews online. I loved this spread, I can't wait to finish my sketchbook so I can buy one with thicker paper so I can paint on it.

And secondly, Honestly, I use Gouache but not from the tube. It lets me have that watercolor feel but get the opacity I want, especially if you let them sit in water for a few minutes before you start painting ❤️ 10/10 would recommend lol

  • @JoeStoneArt
    @JoeStoneArt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey :D I'm new but just from watching I don't think the watercolors are the problem but the paper of the sketchbook. Getting deep and vibrant layers on a painting is very dependant on the paper and sketchbook paper is most of the time either to little sized or too much.

I think working primarily in acrylic makes it difficult to go to watercolor just because we're kind of spoiled: we can manipulate the paint so easily, moving from opaque to translucent with the same paint and palette moment to moment. It makes it hard when I work with watercolor. I always feel like, "wait, that's it??? I WANT MOOOORE" 😂 Anyways...
I think others have a good point about paint quality and pigment load but I've also heard that paper quality is really, really important and effects the way you can layer and manipulate your paint. I'm not sure what your sketchbook paper is like, but maybe try out a high quality watercolor paper and see how that changes your experience?

I’m still learning watercolor but I layer a lot. Like 20ish layers sometimes, I almost draw with the paint. I use Sennelier watercolors and I find it easier to layer wet on dry. Another tip is to try and play around with how much water you use in the mix.

  • @butterflycucumbers6279

I think with watercolour you gotta put down the lightest colours first and the most diluted then add definition at the end. You cant build on watercolours its a different technique. There are youtube tutorials for watercolour beginners. Love your channel
