@@manonbassguitar I can't figure out why that is: two coils wound the same direction but wired oppositely and magnetized oppositely should still be hum-cancelling. Now, this is an awesome channel. I've always wanted to take a 3 pickup Les Paul and replace the humbuckers with six single coil sized humbuckers. I'd call it a twelve pack... Just a suggestion.
You'd have to completely rewind the one pickup in the opposite direction for a true humbucker, switching the magnet and wires only fixes half the hum. Better than nothing though.
@@sideoutsidetry this, curl your fingers with your thumb up, then orient you hand with your thumb down, your fingers are now curling the other direction. I *think* that should be reversing the direction of the winding?
The way the P180 looks in the test guitar it is begging to be mounted on some rails so as to be movable towards the bridge or neck as a sort of tone control like seen in the Gibson Grabber II basses. I would be tempted to play with the wiring to achieve series/parallel switching as well as a split mode if fitting something like this permanently in a guitar. With the strength of the magnets you may want to consider metallic covers that could mute the effect somewhat or just a deeper route so that the pickups could be mounted further away from the strings.
Great concept. Great execution. Great sound. My only question... I'm still hearing a lot of buzz/hum. Maybe just a result of unshielded temporary wirinq or grounding. Love the vid though. Keep up the good work.

Its monster sized but great sound (like the way it cleans up too, got character). If the doubled and opposing magnetism is killing the sustain, maybe screw the pickup a tad further away from the strings, you have the output to handle it? But then it might sound like a standard sized hot wound humbucker? Fraction of the cost of a bespoke pickup though.
Bought a set of double cream (suck it Dimarzio) LYWS alnico 2 humbuckers off amazon for like $22 and they are freaking amazing. Anyways, how do you feel about baking some polepiece screws?

Sweet super soapbar Clemintine, you better jump on that double cream P180 patent! Do you think the coils being so close could be choking the string as it rings out due to so much magnet pulling in that one spot or would that change if one coil was hotter with a more lopsided magnetic field?
Thank you for watching! Yes, its a bit too much magnet. I think if you put alnico 2s in it. Itd sound better (to my ears) clearer and twangier but it would take a lot of that warble and choke away. I havent ever tried 2 different magnet strengths in a humbucker from the way they usually share a magnet but thats a hell of an idea! I always try select or wind the coils pretty far from each other so they dont cancel each other out. It makes a much clearer sound~ this time I knew it wouldnt "ROCK" like people expect it too so I just used the hottest ones I had to make sure I can say.. no p90s just sound like that! it @19.1k Hahaha
@@heavymetalATC I gotta admit I laughed out loud and said yesssssss when I saw that 19K reading. I expected it to be darker and was surprised at how lively it was. Thank you SO much! I really tried not to talk about this on the channel but, I have had bad health for many years. After much trial and error and work and experimentation of treatments. I am basically back to normal now and healthier and happier than I have been in 15 years. Its just making me oooze the good vibes. I am so happy about the future.
@@heavymetalATCContinued good health to you sir! I truly enjoy your work.
Thanks for proving again to try it, you might like the result!
you say the shit that i think of saying to other guitarists, your such a bloody wiring genius, teach me the ways oh lord i have been thinking about how to wire two single coils for the last few weeks then your video pops up now, great shit dude seriously rock on! subbing as of now.
I haven’t received notifications for your Chanel and I am subscribed. Glad this one came up.
That is friggin excellent,I can see getting a one pickup guitar now, as long as it has a 180,I'm already wondering what a 360 would sound like.🤣👍
I remember the comment on the last video that recommended this!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a kind comment CRT. The comments are definitely the main driving force on the channel. I got a notepad full of comments and suggestions that looks like an ancient scroll. I'll never be able to get around to all of them but I know there are some real jewels in the bunch.
@@heavymetalATCwhat if you turned a humbucker into a single coil?
Youre a cool and funny dude. Also way smarter than me, and i really think Im a smart monkey. Those sound badass for sure.
finally I've been trying to make one of these for a while now thanks
Awesome Jethro! I am so glad to hear that. I hope this helps you out. Thank you for letting me know. These are the things I love to hear!
Absolutely bad assed!!! This is GREAT! For a Harley-Benton DC, this would be a great project. Thanks man and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
I "love" the videos (concepts, builds and in general the beautiful world of Dr. Emmett Brown as it might apply to the guitar universe)
Thank-you, so much - Inspirational!!
Thank you so much for all the kind words Luke. I really do appreciate hearing that inspire word, thats the whole point. If a man can figure out how to make a living inspiring people.. I think youll see a happy grateful man. Hahaha! I definitely have a natural doc brown hairdo. 1.21 jiggawatts!
I forgot to mention Home Depot sells copper plates that may reduce the hum. You rock🤘🏼
Looking forward to seeing todays mad scientist project! Thanks clem.
Now, this is an awesome channel. I've always wanted to take a 3 pickup Les Paul and replace the humbuckers with six single coil sized humbuckers. I'd call it a twelve pack... Just a suggestion.
Thank you for the suggestion. That is a great idea.
Great job . That sounded really fantastic even w the Strat-a-ca-cocis. And hey , if the Lyon was originaly S S HB I have one.
Love it...wish i had this pickup in my guitar...
That sounds really good, very interesting idea, thank you.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write a kind comment.
You'd have to completely rewind the one pickup in the opposite direction for a true humbucker, switching the magnet and wires only fixes half the hum. Better than nothing though.
If he could get it all the way apart (maybe some heat to melt the wax), I think flipping the coil upside down might also work.
@AlanW Think about it, clockwise upside down is still clockwise. Kinda counter intuitive, but yep.
@@AlanW You'd have to flip the back to the front to truly "flip" it.
@@sideoutsidetry this, curl your fingers with your thumb up, then orient you hand with your thumb down, your fingers are now curling the other direction. I *think* that should be reversing the direction of the winding?
@AlanW It has to be wound the other way, there is no flipping it, look it up, I've already explained it, it's not opinion it's fact.
AHAHAHAHA! You took me up on my suggestion!!! Outstanding man! Holy crap, I might need to buck hum in the privacy of my own home too!😆🤣😂🤘🏼🎸🔥
The way the P180 looks in the test guitar it is begging to be mounted on some rails so as to be movable towards the bridge or neck as a sort of tone control like seen in the Gibson Grabber II basses.
Sounds very nice, man.
Double Trouble? Sounded damn good.
GFS makes a P90 humbucker... cool video!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write a kind comment James. Also for sharing the great info. a viewer named john also mentioned this and I had no idea? thanks dude its chrome and humbucker size and under $40. I just might have to try one of these.
@@heavymetalATC I have two builds with their parts and one of their xaviere lp type guitars. their customer service can suck at times, but it's affordable decent gear, have a great day, glad I found your page!
That’s a crazy humbucker!
I love it! I'd love to play that guitar through my rig.
Thanks for watching and leaving a kind comment Craig. I'd imagine this thing would really bark on a big Marshall or Randall.
@@heavymetalATC yes to the big Marshall!
i love u crazy guitar making guy
wooooohoooo a brand new video freom Clemintine! :)
I love your videos. Your awesome.
Man that's sick!
I think I'm going to try this wish me good luck !
They should put those in a Les Paul Jr, and call it a Les Paul Senior!
ive been playing with speakers and turning them into microphones for the irony, well what i realized is that a 1.5x3.5 speaker is roughly the same size as a p90. what if you found some way of making a speaker a guitar pickup by gluing a magnet to the front of the speaker to cause the magnet to move the coil of the speaker
I don't understand why you get comments that well... aren't worth a crap or very kind. I've got total respect for you & for those specially "mentality deranged" individuals who go for whatever they want by doing it themselves! I'm waiting for the HeavymetalATC "Paused Judge Judy for the bastardization of...." 😂😂😂.. You just built the coolest P90 I've ever heard! Look at one of the Guitar Fetish Goil foil P90's.. I've got 2 on a Les Paul & they're great, they are double coil too
Thank you for taking the time to leave a kind comment GM. I think it was just the timing around Christmas. I usually don't get many comments like those. Last vid was rough? I'm still happy to have them. Let the hatred fly. All engagement is good. I'm literally getting paid for them to complain so I'm happy to read the comments and respond nicely. I'll use their hate to take somebody I love out on a date. LOL I thought this one sounded very good myself. I hate that I cant have yall in the room with me with it cranked up where you can feel it. Its hard to get stuff to translate on video and Im not going to eq it. Thats dishonest for a tone comparison IMO. Thanks for the info! I'll look into those pickups I have never heard of them before, otr knew such a thing.. was a thing.Hahaha! Yep I went down a rabbit hole and I like the look of the specs on that "mean 90" as well.
Ah, you can tell how loud it is in here if you listen close during certain notes you can hear hanging wine glasses ringing 30 feet away... and Im like yeah I cant really hear good enough to mix and master music. Huh I wonder why?
@@heavymetalATC You work hard to create these ideas, you have a great brain to do this stuff & I've liked all your ideas & hope to see more, and keep taking those hateful comments to the bank! 😂
@@heavymetalATC I just ordered 2 PAF style boutique pickups from Guitar Fetish because I've bought one before & they have a really clean bell like tone.. the set was 57 bucks.. I think they're alnico 5 but alnico 2 is really my favorite but I like the guitar Fetish pickups so well, there's only a very minor sound difference
Curtis Novak makes a p180 in a jazzmaster form factor, but I don't think it bucks hum. Sounds sick though.
Half the comments “Why do you do everything wrong? If I ever got around to doing anything myself, I would do it much better.“ 😂😂
Hahaha! ok yeah you got me with this one. Its pretty accurate at times. I think that last video was just close to Christmas and many people were having a harder time than normal. I don't usually receive very many off-color comments or any at all. I have been very lucky in that aspect. That last vid just seemed to push some buttons? I cant think of any other reason but timing? Either way the secret is. I get a higher price per view and the video shows up in more places when they leave comments. That's engagement to the Algorithm its all good even dislikes. So their hatred or annoyance is buying me groceries. I'll eat the hate gladly and respond with actual kindness. Great comment though James my wife instantly said, "I LIKE THAT GUY!" LOL!
@@heavymetalATC I mean no disrespect. I have seen the comments on your channel and others. You make great videos and ask the questions I want asked. I’m glad you actually try to understand and communicate the most basic principles so that we can get past the lore and onto fun projects. Keep it up.
No offense taken here brother. Thank you so much for the kind words. That5 comment made me literally belly chuckle out loud and say: hey... come look at this one!@@jamescranefinecarpentry7146
Now I'm wondering if a humbucker homemade alumitone would sound different from a single one. Given that people keep saying their humbucker version doesn't actually do anything, but not explain why.
Sounds good! What do you think of G&L Z coils?
I mean i know it is not really your style, but i would looooove to heard this p180bucker in full gain on this thing! :) or with a drive/distortion..
Hell yeah!
Thank you so much for watching Shugo.. Ill pull a chick fil-a and say: my pleasure to serve you sir. Thats has always been strange to me Hahaha! well anyhow... Thanks again.
This is awesome, and gives me some ideas for my 3xP90 Meteor guitar from Rondo. I already have a nice guitar or two. I want something mean now--LOL!
(I'm actually not mean)
OK, can your P90 pickup from last video be combined with that "Coppertone" idea to get *good* humbucking? My ideas brain is still loving that Coppertone thing like that. I'm expecting that it will have a different tone from a standard P90; but that's OK, cuz I can probably find a way to use it.
One of these days, I'm going to get to shake your hand. 😆
Thank you for all the participation and support on the channel Rob. Man you might be on to something here... like using a 1 turn coil or a sliced copper backplate as the bucking coil. Hmmm? Ive never seen that done. That's a darn good hypothesis Rob. I don't know if I'll ever get around to doing it but I'll put it in my notes.
Hey bro if stuff keeps going as well as it has been. I think I may be out and about shaking some hands before too long.
Maybe try some alnico 3 magnets to lower the pull on the strings
That was my exact thoughts as well! I bet it would really twang up then. Thank you for watching!
Yeah. AlNiCo 3 sounds sweet too. I switched over one of those cheap HB size P90s. I like it alot.
I dig the content. Keep on keping on bruh.

Very cool
I like it
I'll share this with my lady friends.
Furthermore, double cream after the holidays? Not sure if I'm going to be able to digest that lol.
Jokes aside, mad idea, I might actually do this on a guitar I'm working on. Would it matter if I place the bucking coil in a different position? What about angling the pickups?
Thank you for watching Tony. I really havent tried moving 2 coils that are humbucking around against each other and then with opposing or same angles??? dang bro. I may have to come up with some slide rule type mounting rig and try this some time! I'm gonna put this in my notes. GOOD 1!
Its monster sized but great sound (like the way it cleans up too, got character). If the doubled and opposing magnetism is killing the sustain, maybe screw the pickup a tad further away from the strings, you have the output to handle it? But then it might sound like a standard sized hot wound humbucker? Fraction of the cost of a bespoke pickup though.
a p180! This I have to try for myself. I hope my expired Washington state plate will be good for the tone.
Bought a set of double cream (suck it Dimarzio) LYWS alnico 2 humbuckers off amazon for like $22 and they are freaking amazing. Anyways, how do you feel about baking some polepiece screws?
I'm gonna try 2 p90 with 2 screws removed, in series like p bass
Awesome
Next up has to be a double humbucker humbucker. Buckerbucker.
Dang!.. I think you just did it. I just screen shot that comment. It might be a few down the line but its obviously gotta happen. Thank you soo much for this suggestion Lee. Its obvious when you say it but it had escaped me.
I wonder what difference in sound would be the same process as in this video except you actually use dimarzio or duncans.
Hey Clemintine, I’ve been watcihng your videos for a while and there’s something that keeps bugging me… What’s the deal with the supersaiyan thing? Is it some obscure pun my ESL ass can’t wrap its head around? I’m completely puzzled lol

Wire it Parallel..?
I'm guessing you go out of tune during the demo because those are new strings. I imagine those add up over time too with all the testing.
Sweet! Make another video.

Could you make a Charlie Christian pickup?
Thanks for watching Patrick. Several people have mentioned this so it looks like l might have to look into the construction specifics and see what I can pull off for a vid soon. I'll put this in my notes right now. 📝
This would be great fun on a master volume guitar and cranked amp alone. On the strat drag you might have one act as the slug coil like a wide PAF…although maybe weaker magnets at the center vs outside might change the pull enough.
GFS sells a P180 already made.
Thank you for this info! I just looked at that. Awesome! humbucker size with chrome cover. may have to check one of those out the price is great too! thanks john.
They sell a soap bar size one too with cream covers.
What if you move it to the neck position?
Thanks for watching Bob. The general difference should be more bass and less "rock" sound or twang.Id figure it'b be real bassy. Might have to try?
I don’t know what other people are hearing, but the P-90 in my ‘55 Junior sounds pretty twangy when I want it to...
I thought P90s being twangy is why we like P90s
Nothing does articulate edge of breakup/light crunch like a P90 ... except possibly two P90s
Couldn't you just physically rotate one of the pickups to put the magnets out of phase, rather than taking them apart?
