CBS Sports Sunday game-day spotlight and on this date in history, CBS featured 2 living legends and a journalist on his way to the Hall of Fame…
The date was Christmas Day 1980. At halftime of #celtics vs #knicks annual nationally televised holiday showdown at Madison Square Garden, Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan played host to the 2 most iconic men in basketball, Red Auerbach and Bill Russell.
The discussion is so interesting as they span topics on the days NBA as well as the game a decade earlier when both Auerbach and Russell were in the midst of their record breaking, earth shattering run of 11 titles in 13 seasons.
Despite my adoration for rare and newly discovered content on #NBAHistory, and my obsession with this segment has also been torturous but maybe the viewers of this channel can help me to find out why Ryan, seemingly pointing questions baited for good publicity for basketball in Boston, focused so much on this topic, during the birth of the Bird, Parish, Tiny, Maxwell and Henderson era? Wasn't the PR surrounding anything Larry Bird related good enough to make Parish want to come, Tiny want to come, etc?
Also worth noting on this topic, Russell is the least ornery about Boston then maybe I've EVER seen/heard him.
I asked Bob Ryan ago I asked Bob Ryan about the context surrounding this obvious "infomercial"
    Strange.
Having studied the history of the league so much, I'm left to believe that the poor press of the 1977 & 78 seasons were leaking into the press surrounding 1980-81 season…? But how? The year prior Bird had orchestrated the largest single season turnaround for a team in NBA history. That record stood for decades. The Celtics still hold the record but a different green team beat out their 1981 forefathers… can you guess which team did this?
Anyway, would love to hear any info you may have on this interview and any potential guesses you may want to provide could be fun too. Let's do it.
    Thanks!
