Haven’t seen this film in 20 years since it aired on Encore. On one hand, this is one of the most stylish anime films ever made. The soundtrack is almost John Carpenter like. On the other hand, X/1999 is one of the most depressing anime films ever made. All of the heroes and villains die violent horrific deaths and nobody wins in the end.
Well, not ALL =P , the main character is alive in the end. But yeah, EVERYbody else dies. The human race gets to go on living, blissfully unaware of what transpired, all the while, the main character is holding the head of his best friend, who he killed, of which who had killed their other best friend. Poor guy.
I remember the hype for this right when it came out. I still have the Animerica issue with X on the cover and the large profile of the film. I was really excited because it was a new Rintaro film
FYI the X series and film is a sorta sequel to an older clamp Manga called Tokyo Babylon. The two main characters from that series are the first two who fight each other in this film.
it is not sequel. it just in same univers manga CLAMP. yes, Sakura card capture, xxxHolig, magic knight rayearth, reservoir chronicles tsubasa, chobits, angel layer and kobato(and other) - including.
Kanoe: These obsenities that man has created, the corruption and pollution, all these will be annihilated. Nature will reclaim its dominion, the Earth will breath again. That's sounds very comic book villainess from her!
It was made by Madhouse. Rintaro (Metropolis / Ninja Scroll) directed it. Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) worked with Rintaro on an 80's Psychic battle anime film called Harmegeddon which was an early Madhouse film. Otomo then decided to direct his own projects and made Akira a few years later. X/1999 has a lot in common with Harmageddon. Both are about teams fighting again evil in Post apocalyptic settings to save the world.
I actually agree, I think it’s more impactful in the film, the absolute salt thrown at this film is utterly ridiculous because as faithful as the anime series is it’s so much inferior compared to this movie
Subscribed just for the channel name. Been on a kick of watching old anime heavy on Asian religious themes, any recommendations? So far I've watched Dark Myth, Peacock King and now this.
@@ffxiarcadius there are two factions, dragons of Heaven and dragons of earth that are destined to meet in a great battle for the fate of the earth. Dragons of Earth want to destroy humanity to let the earth heal and restart while the dragons of heaven want to protect humanity and earth as it is now. Kamui, the central character, is all powerful, and essentially has the ability to choose the fate of the earth. However, as to not let the battle be one sided, there are actually two Kamuis. The "true" kamui, and his twin star, Kamuis childhood friend Fuma. As soon as kamui chooses his side in the battle, fuma awakens as the other kamui and joins the opposing side. Fumas sister and kamuis love interest, Kotori, is realized to have a sacred sword within her (the same way that kamuis mother did at the beginning of the film), which is why fuma kills her to retrieve it. The dragons of heaven and dragons of earth fight for the seven barriers, either to protect or destroy them.. these barriers are places that protect Tokyo. As members of both factions die and bring down the barriers, there remains only one, Tokyo tower. After fuma breaks into the building where princess hinoto resides, killing kotori for the sword and destroying the building in the process, princess hinoto sends kamui to Tokyo tower to await the final battle. Kamui and the other kamui, fuma, then engage in a rather anticlimactic battle resulting in fumas sword breaking and kamui cutting off fumas head, preventing the dragons of earth from destroying humanity. There the movie ends. Unfortunately the movie doesn't add much in the way of character development or plot from the manga The tv series made a few years later does a better job of going into what's going on and lore, though the ending was much worse in my opinion. That was a BIG read but if you want the whole movie broken down into one sentence, go back and listen to what kanoe tells fuma when he first appears to her, around the 43 minute mark. She tells the entire plot of the movie in one sentence, although it only really makes sense if you know what's going on
@pixelsprite4230 thank you for this. I saw this film as a kid back in like 97/98 late one night at my grandma's house. I saw some scene of some chick get her head sliced off and was like wtf is this??? I still don't know what scene that was but I never forgot the images. That and the last battle. But this movie is hazy for me bc I didn't know what was going on neither.
When was this manga created i,lll geust in the 90's pay attension at 13:14 the quote ,,the great computer that monitors all computers in the world so is that what they,re building in belgium (brussels) a coincidense or just program planning ?
Seeing this for the first time I need to say: I'm really desapointed. Not because is depressing, but just because the plot don't hold on itself. It's everething so undeniably rushed, you cannot feel really close to a character, everything so generically cliche. A true shame: The animation quality it's superb, the music is emotional and the central plot can be pushed for a really impact final. Actually the true is a battle without any sense, without a strong emotion and the Fuuma's sword simply broke at the first strike like garbage! So why ge needs to kill his sister only to take that crap??! Again, a shame... Waisted potential
7:00 saves you time
I noticed no one said thank u. Thank u my guy.
You da truth!
thank you, gigachad
Thanks my niga

The 90's was the best era for anime.
I would say the 80's, then the 90's.
there's still a smaller amount of good anime in the 2000s to nowadays to but one thing is sure , the golden age of the greatest anime stuff is finish
70s and 80s were

Woke?

tv series was better
This looks better then anything animated by computer today. It only needs a HD treatment.
i watched this when i was 4 and it scarred me for life tbh lol.
Devil Man and Ogre Slayer are two of the best anime from the older 80's-90's selection.
😄👍
Sword fighting between Kamoui and Fuma has reminded me of Raiden and Solidus Snake on Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. 😢🇺🇸😭💜🌹⚰️🪦🤗

That ending... Oh Jesus. 😢
X Japan for ever love has become an anthem of our lives forr many...
Indeed, EVERYbody except for the main character died.
Very heartbreaking 💔😭
Appreciate the upload friend. The world could use more anime these days, you’re doing good work 💯🙏🏼👏🏼
43:30 kanoe explains the entire plot of the movie in one single line
Got this beauty on VHS. Thanks for the upload

The BEAST, THE COMPUTER!!! ITS TRUE, THIS ANIME WAS WAY BEFORE ITS TIME
this ending more fitting then what the tv version friendship is magic crap
Lol, TV version only has few survivers. How is it happy? Just because it played more upbeat music while they were visiting graves of their loved ones?
