Classic Game Room reviews PHANTASY STAR PORTABLE 2 for Sony PSP from Sega. Taking place 3 years after the events in Phantasy Star Universe you play as a group of mercenaries out to save the Gurhal system from certain doom! Phantasy Star Portable 2 is a massive JRPG adventure video game where you collect weapons, mix and match powers and level up to superhuman strength to fight enemies by the thousands.
this game was beyond amazing in high school I spent countless hours playing this especially online was such a great online experience on the psp wish they brought this to vita
Man, the nostalgia.. I played this game loong time ago, I was very young, maybe lesser than 10 or just having from 10-11. It was awsome, I played a lot. The online was pretty fun and people was really cool
Play it on a hacked Vita dual analogs makes it so much better . I think the Vita is still one of the best handheld systems ever made .
If only Sony would have agreed .
I only had the demo when i was a kid but boy did i play the living hell out the demo and loved the intro
Me too!
playing a modern Phantasy Star game for the story is like going to the car wash to to have dinner
Well said. Good analogy.
so many hours invested in this game, even to this day...so worth it. I hope sega makes another Phantasy star game with a addictive story like this one.
+nightreactor920 i hit almost 900 hours on this game. the only other games i ever invested that kind of time into are persona 3, super smash bros, earth defense force, and my combined hours in pokemon games.
Just got this game on vita. You can set the right stick to the d-pad giving it the dual stick controls it needs! Highly recommend if you can get it on your vita
It's like having a totally new experience on the Hacked Vita .
I honestly have been enjoying my older system than my Switch .
Also if ya like Y"s games the Vita is the best especially cause of the psp option .
i realy love lord carnage's reviews...its always giving you the good vibes when playing games, btw i hate IGN and GAMESPOT review's...
I played the everlasting shitt out of this game.
i still do if you ever want to have a go in co-op these days.
Couldn’t find another game that was similar to this , after the servers shut down I found destiny . Probably the most relatable game I’ve played in years.
Damn, i remember watching tihis review when it came out and being super hyped for this game. Now finally over a decade later I'm playing PSP2 Infinity on Steam Deck using PPSSPP with full english translation, HD texture pack, and 60fps. We never got the english version of infinity, and I wasn't a fan of that choice back then. However, with all of the communities effort, Its amazing to be able to play that gem in its updated state!
…..you literally just convinced me to get a steam deck
Custom Firmware mate - piracy isn't ideal, but when they won't even carry the content you want to buy, what else is there to do. You could find it used of course.
Came to see if it’s worth playing in 2021/2022. I’m jealous of everyone who got to play online in 2010
Hey, as long as Mark's reviewing Dreamcast games, he ought to review the original Phantasy Star Online.
They should remake Phantasy Star IV, it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
I don't know what it was about this game but I just couldn't get into it at all. I'm a huge fan of the whole Phantasy Star series as well.
Man!! I miss phantasy star portable 2 it was awesome but it no longer in playstation network and the psvita gets no respect because it sucked so hard!!!!
+Dennis Rodriguez Really? But it's back up now.

+Annmarie Jin if you download on the psn, can I then download onto the vita? And if so, how do you do that?
+Ian Clark I have neither the vita or the psp, but in the link it says "memory stick duo compatible". The PSP2 game is only playable on the psp (stated in the link I provided).
I agree.
4 years later and my Vita now has homebrew access to any game I desire with 264gb micro sd card and free games and dlc. Playing Xenogears AND Phantasy Star protable 2 right now
This game is really hard to find now. Used complete copies go for like $50 and up last time I checked.
Maaan I LOVED PSU on the PS2....one of my 1st/best online experiences (Next to Monster Hunter for PS2).
My ONLY complaint was that they removed button timing from the combat....that made a HUGE difference in PSO, but I still
Saddens me that Infinity was never released here. I want the ability to use my other characters as party mates. Thankfully that feature was brought over to PSO2...which makes me sadder because Sega doesn't seem to have any intention to bring that over anyway.
@khairul3272 The question is... do YOU think you should get the game
This game is pretty fun.I would still play it sometimes when I get bored.
I am just battling against the final boss right now
ikagura how long is the story mode
It took you 17 years to reach the final boss? 😂
Was expecting the fighting system to be monster hunter-like. Though the chain hit system is good.
I need your eyes to see that, I'm not seeing any similarities between the two, they are not even on the same color, Rathalos has a darker shade of red, their heads are completely different, their tail is, their wings too, what monster hunter game are you talking about because comparing this to rathalos is like comparing a Unicorn to a horse, same kind of animal, but a different entity.
@wtfiyn Well depends. This one is it's own thing. Since it's not bound by the events of the Seed Invasion story that drove Phantasy Star Universe. PSP 1 was kinda like a supplimental side story to the main story of PSU, this, while a MUCH smaller stroyline than the whole of PSU+PSP is it's own story with it's own goals. It's quite good. I liked the entire series, and that being said I liked PSU much more than PSO (And I loved PSO) However, as is true for me consistantly the classic series=#1.
@Poopyheadnumber1 I played a very short while of the Blue Burst Online server through a friend - that's all my experience with Phantasy Star.
I also have the Sega Genesis Collection on my PSP, it has Phantasy Star III and IV if I'm not mistaken, and I did enjoy the IVth.
after level 20 i couldnt play anymore, the battles are so monotone!!
but at least the game includes a lot of fanservice
Evangelion clothes and weapons
Hatsune Miku items
Fate stay night items (i was wearing Archer clothes with Kancho and bakuya)
Fanta items, Pizza hut items blah blah blah
You said you enjoyed this game ALOT, i guess you enloyed FF7 just as much lol, will you be making reviews on some of the up coming games like Black Ops ect
@xanyleon hmm well Phantasy star universe has a £6.99/$9.99 monthly subscription and most people are moving to PSP2. I've been playing PSU for a while but PSP2 looks much better (ive ordered mine but the website has been an @ss coz its out of stock >.>)
@Poopyheadnumber1 But does it even have an Online function? I never heard of a monthly fee for a Playstation Portable game. Especially considering the PSP is the most hacked console in the market right now.
5:05 - Ah, I remember those things.... They flattened my friend into the floor over 9000 times.... I came to the rescue, because I was the Medic xD
LOL I did the same thing as the dude who reviews I played so much the sidequests that when I begun playing the story mode I was so powerful that the monsters died with a few hits. :P
@Izunin
Yeah that's right on. Mark may look harder at the positive aspects in a relatively mediocre game, but there's nothing wrong with that. Plus Mark doesn't like every game.
the last Phantasy Star game l played was PSIV (and...l still need to beat that game)
This looks good, l might give it a try but IMO it looks alot like a Star Ocean game.
the servers are still up anyone would like to play? im kinda new thou
They final let ps vita owner download to there vita if you bought the game on psn before
lets play!
my name is subject x add me
Looked at the description and noticed it had "JRPG adventure video game" and was about be all YOU SAID GAME TWICE.
Then I stepped back and noticed I was THAT guy.
@Chipsonfire
I agree with you partly The offline for Phantasy Star Universe is god horrible but online is alot of fun even more so with friends.
@Nejissj4 valkyria chronicles 2 is a shooting game, but not an action one. you gotta use your brains a lil on that, but i
I love this game very much. one of the best the PSP has to offer.
@Poopyheadnumber1 Would you reccomend it to someone of my taste?
I usually play J-RPGs that are of a darker or more serious tone.
@TheRogueMonk Most Mc Donalds offer free wifi. Other business like coffee shops and hotels do too.
So you can play this online?? So it's like the Dreamcast is back?? Can you talk to other players via the microphone perhaps??
I play PSOBB online on schthack server, but this PSP game looks awesome. Thanks for the review, I never knew about this game.
Great review, Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Portable are great.
There is a rumor going around about phantasy star universe 2 for the main consoles
like xbox and 360.... is that true?
Phatasy Star Universe for 360 is, in my opinion, one of the worst games for the 360. This, however, doesn't look so bad.
@EightySix22 There is still quite a large community for this lol. Not as big as release, but still kinda big.
oh yeah Phantasy Star Universe Rules
Cuz Beast are awesome! Thumb up this if you rule and think this is true!
@wightknight121 Maybe he didn't name "he is" player "loard" karnage because he doesn't want to kill the joke.
theres a jimmi hendrix reference somewhere in this vid ill sub you if you can find it
8P
Just curious, does the game have NPCs for teamates? online play isn't an option for me.
...What makes you feel this way? And is it only this series that makes you state that? All video games fall under what you've stated but I can't totally agree or disagree with said statement. Is actually ejoying any game not a worthwhile investment?? I've modeled ,skydived, autocrossed, partied like a rockstar, family, friends, career, networking..what are you saying?? I want to understand your point...
Not by that much thankfully :) Some characters from the earlier universe games do appear, but they don't have much to do with the story overall. I think that's why the game gets more praise then the first portable game, whih confused the hell out of me at first. The story is an expansion on phantasy star universe's, and didn't do a good job with it. Not sure what else to say. You can try looking on wikipedia, or some of the phantasy star fansites. Hope I was of some help to you ^_^
The only reason I don't own a PSPGo is because it doesnt play Netflix, does it? But anyways, it seems like I am buying games I could be playing on older PSP models than my PS Vita... wtf? I'm really waiting for LBP and I'll probably get UMvC3 as soon as the price drops. But I'm also waiting for Monster Hunter and Disgaea for the PSV. I already own ClaDun x2 and am thinking about Half-Minute Hero. I have 2 free PSV exclusives from the PSN but eh... I think JRPGs are better than anything else.
i like this game (and the couple of PhSt games that come before it) just wish they made it for consoles again. or sense there remaking DC games for psn and XBLA. i wounder if they ever going to remake pso. i liked that game too when it came out to dc. (even if i had to barrow my friends dc because i own n64
@BloodRawEngine89 I was talking about MHFU, besites in tri you have to pay attention to the stamina of the monsters before you could use this strategy it they are tired they stay in the trap for like 10 sec, time enough for even placing 4 bombs so that is 16 bombs with a team of 4, also this is the best way to defeat Alatreon extremely fast, put him to sleep then bomb him. In MH you should allways make a combined use of items and your own weapons... cookie cutter MH strategy ... yeah right

@5k4k1dhtp oh no no this isn't like that at all, there are allot of parts where you just need to know the right place to stand, timing of perfect blocks, knowing what equipment is best, where you should dodge, hell just like mh lols (btw mh never is hard, trapmaster + bomber skill + 4 players BOOOM everything dies in a few min except for some of the elder dragons ofcourse [not lao shen lung and alatreon tho they are just easy] )
@koshaku000 This. There are a TON of things to do; quests, weapon collecting, titles to earn, decorations to get, etc. So if you're looking for a game that you can spend a good amount of time on this is great. Nothing wrong with Crisis Core, but for your money I feel this is a better investment. It also has online with all sorts of fucked up people, so that adds to the entertainment.
@InecomCompany Phantasy Star is takes place 3 years after Universe. This take place a little later.
@khairul3272 If you like RPGS, have a psp and a wireless internet and want to play online then YEAH!
Game looks awesome but i just have 2 questions:
1. Do i have to have played all the previous phantasy star games (or atleast phantasy star portable 1) in order to get the story or will i be fine without knowing? Cause ive never played any phantasy star game.
2. Is this game better then the first? Cause i know some sequels arent necessarily better.
Well, Kingdom Hearts 2, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XIII (in the 2006 CGI demo)
I'm pretty sure Lord of Arcana was either only published by them, or it was just a quick money grab. Square Enix always knew how to make good visuals, they were dominating the PS2 era. Always think back to the time when these games and visuals were released.
so.... im used to PSU where there was the infamous ''bounty hunter fee" or an mmo monthly fee better known.. which made it like an actual mmo.. does this version have anything similar or to that. or ANY form additional payment other than the game itself. and lets say i buy preowned is there another unique id to purchase?
@downphoenix Monster Hunter takes a lot more skill. This game is just about leveling up to get more powerful. Here you can only kill what your level permits you to. In Monster Hunter, you can have the weakest equipment and still kill the toughest enemies (except for the REALLY powerful ones (elderdragons), but that's just 'cause they have so much HP)
I know I will get plenty of thumbs down but what the heck someone has to say it: First part had terrible storyline, FFS even tetris had better storyline than Phantasy Star Portable... combat was repetitive and boring after 6-8 hours, grind was terrible, Only thing that was extremly well made was graphics, but graphics aside Phantasy star portable was shit if you ask me.
Man, I loved Phantasy Star II! Nice shout out to at the end!
@EightySix22 There is a Phantasy Star Portable 1&2 Bundle pack coming out for $10 on Walmart's website available for pre-order. I recommend you check that out. I just got my PSP, so I decided to pre-order that. If you decided to get that and ever need anyone to play with, just let me know.
Haha, sorry Mark, SEGA has NEVER made a phantasy star game with dual analog control, and i don't understand why. You should review phantasy star zero for the DS also. A fantastic game indeed. Oh yeah, good review as well, VIRAL DOG would most certainly approve.
am i the only 1 who dont get the take your turn combat?there is no dodging its push a button for automated attack wait for comp automated attack repeat/what the hell is so fun with that!im asking cuz i know these r popular and wonder how i can hate something so many gamers love am i missing something?
so, do you have to have online mode to play through the story? because I've heard rumors that phantasy star for PS2 is online and NO story mode, why's that.? so, how's this game? do you have to play online mode to get through the story? or does this have single-player story mode?
I can't help it but I compare this to Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core. Which looks waaay better. I usually pay attention to the story, I don't think about leveling up in JRPGs. I only come to think on experience level when I encounter a boss and worry if I'm high enough to take it down.
y'know what... this game looks and feels like an online rpg game. kinda reminds me of dothack.
@Waage83 Well, the PSP's short battery life is one of the reasons I sold it off.
Don't bother looking on the PSN store. :( They stopped carrying it some months ago. I can't even get the media go program to load up anymore, because I had to reboot my computer and it got deleted. It is an awesome game, and I hope you find a copy soon! :D
Phantasy Star Portable or PSP is awesome ecept for the grinding and other stuff but whatever this game deserves more player or popularity i really like it the yshould make a new one for the ps3 or xbox with more stuff races and a brand new story
I have only played phantasy star on the DS, and its a great game for me, since i like rpg's. I have often thought of getting this game for my psp but unlike on the ds there is no magic element..... thats the only thing which has stopped me from doing so.
They decided not to include Japanese voice overs, which is a major selling point in the Asian ACG world. When I started my European version of this game and discovered only English is available I feel somewhat cheated for my money.
Well, I woulkd say the DS is more of the handheld for choice for JRPG's, but I guess thats up to anyone to decide. Atlus publishes mostly the same amount of games on both systems, whereas namco and falcom prefer the PSP and Square-Enix prefers the DS.
01:30 - Little Wing? The terrific song by Stevie Ray Vaughn? Or the original by Jimi Hendrix?
... what kind of Rathalos are you talking about? Obviously not the one from monster hunter.
@Poopyheadnumber1 So I assume it has its own servers. Pretty neat. Might get it myself then.
groan man the ai allies never exactly gave you much confidence eh? look at the way they talk!
I swear you do voice work for other channels don't you :)
you can try, i think chikhen can play almost any games coz it's also a cfw...you can also try other cfw like the 6.60 pro b or alike. i play this game with my friends and we dont have the same cfw, mine is cfw 6.60 pro b-10
I disagree. Square Enix always finds a way to push the hardware to its limits, in terms of graphics, effects and polygons, and they always have colorful environments in their games, yet you don't experience frame drops.
@deanthompson88 I know it does, but why would I want to re-buy games for a system thats gonna cost like $300 or more, plus the price of Sony's new memory cards. I much rather wait. I already have my psp and I love it.
@bruckshot69 nope, just buy a new copy and you receive a code or else get the downloadable from the PSN, tons of hrs of pure online entertainment, I also had the fallout new vegas, damn I wish the days were 48 hrs long...
i had got the demo a while back. i was planning on getting the full game but spent my money on PSP and when i got enough money the buy the second one PSN had stopped carrying it in the PSN store.
@greenblobo9 Phantasy Star Online was the first game in the series that played like an action game. Like Kingdom Hearts, although it came out long before Kingdom Hearts. So it's a ripoff of Phantasy Star.
@TheForgotenDemon i hope you do because there are so many GREAT GAMES .... unlike other consoles PSP is the only one that has shitloads of JRPG's wich are all awsome to play .
Currently hooked on psp2 afther getting a psp a month ago.It is definitely addtcitve as phantasy star online was for me any ways. Now if sega would just release psp2 infinitey in the u.s.
this looks EXACTLY like phantasy star universe, the boss battle with de ragan has the same exact landscape.
i can see so much copy-pasted content in this game... makes me want to get it!
you know what will be great? a dynasty warriors style phantasy star game as an MMO.
@pandaburgar u should get Phantasy star 2! I have Valhalla knights 2 its ok but Phantasy star 2 is online and feel and looks a lot better youll have a lot of fun with it!
Gawd, My brother played the Hell out of PSU, as I did I.
I definitely want this, My Bro started before me in PSU and got up to Lv.80, And I made Lv.120 before him ;D
i wish they had came out with phantasy star for the psp back when i had a psp...i wanted it SO BAD i even went as far as to hack it so that i could play phantasy star online
@deanthompson88 Get this game! You won't be dissapointed. Looks beautiful, plays great, lots of missions, and not to mention free online play. Totally worth it.
if anybody has downloaded the game off of psn, can i use ur account to re download it? (please delete your credit card info before you let me use ur account)
