- Part 1 of 2: Classic Game Room reviews Ys I & II CHRONICLES for PSP, starting with Ys 1 Ancient Ys Vanished Omen, originally released in 1987 by Falcom. This remake of Ys 1 by Falcom is published by Xseed for the Sony PSP and has beautiful anime style cut scenes and totally updated visuals that look great and retain the classic old school RPG feel of the game. In Ys 1 you play as Adol Christin and eventually meet your friend Dogi. Bumper car combat makes the game extremely simple to play and means that all combat is based on experience and weapons until you near the end of the game, but the storyline and plot progression is good enough to keep players interested who dig RPG style stories and babes with blue hair that play the harmonica. This CGR review of Ys 1 from the Ys I and II Chronicles set has gameplay from Ys on PSP showing Ys RPG JRPG style game play on PSP in HD.

@@khav11 i still haven't played an ys game. i played trails in the sky and nayuta though, both psp games made by the same developers and they are some of my favorite games ever now, so i think i'm gonna try ys7 on psp next. it looks like nayuta without a jump button from what i've seen, so i'm sure i'll enjoy it even if i miss the jump mechanic from nayuta.
I played the 1987 version of Ys I on the Sega Master System when I was young. It was one of my favourite games ever! This year I downloaded this version off PSN onto my Vita, and wow. Just wow. What a game! It has been remade beautifully, and the music is awesome. They haven't changed the game layout or objectives much that much, just vastly modernised it. It's perfect! Well worth getting.
I picked up the Memories of Celceta and decided to play through every single one of them before giving it a try and so far, I'm hooked.

Ys, the one JRPG series that decides that standard battle music isn't good enough, so they put sick Rock style music for it all. I love it.
I want to say thanks to you Mark. With your preview of Ys Seven at e3 a while back I was hooked. I love action rpgs like star ocean.

I seriously lol'd when you said "You literally run into enemies and kill them", while showing it. It's so out of the ordinary, I love it. Looks like an awesome game! Love the visuals too. They remind me of Wild ARMs 1 back on the PS1, which is very very awesome.

I personally want to thank Mark for getting me into the Ys series. I am new to the PSP, and I've made all the Ys games (premium editions) my first purchases. I also want to thank the guy that Mark interviewed last year about the Ys series. He also got me into the series because he was so passionate about it. Thank you both!
The Oath in Felghana was my favorite out of the recent remakes.

Dude, I used to own Y's before I lost it in a fire. I have it now on an emulator but damn this still looks awesome without taking away from the nostalgia factor for me. I must have it.

@Hardcoregamer728 I did, the turbo grafx version is the reason how people found it was actually 'ees'. It was on the master system a few years before that.
Whaaaatt?! The treasure chest melody sounded JUST LIKE when you get an upgrade on Metroid. Still looks like a great game.

Hey Mark, I played the sms version for 10 minutes years ago over a friend's house, but my real exposure was Ys I & II on the Turbografx CD Rom. Like this one, its both games on one disk, and by most is considered the definitive version for consoles. You can download it on the Wii Virtual arcade as well.
Wow... This looks like an excellent remake.
The original version of this game was for the NEC Turbograpx-16 with the added super card & CD player and later the Turbo Duo which combined all those elements into one system. The Super CD fom NEC had all the great cut scene visuals with voice & music as shown here for the PSP except for the added intro on this new game. I still have my Turbo Duo and Y's Book I & II game. Still plays great after all these years ( -:

the TurboGrafx-CD version is better then not only this version on but is the best versions of all the versions of 1 and 2 imo
Since you can download this on PSN and be able to play it on the Vita is a bonus.

Currently playing the remake of Ys3 : wanderers from Ys (Ys: Oath in Felghana) on the PC and i have to say it's easily one of the best JRPGs i've played.

This game is awesome! The y's series are some of the best games out there. I bought all three games for the psp. They have a y's game coming out for the vita in japan. I don't know about the states though.

@shadowboyt You can get an adapter that lets you hookup your PSP to a TV.... I imagine he's got some kinda setup using that and a video capture card or something...
I didn't think they would be able to make the battle system in Y's I&II look badass but they did.
Finshed Ys 1&2 chronicles a month ago.It's a pretty good remake of the original still i wish it had the sound track from the 'turbografx16 version.Also no voice acting !? Dunno i guess i'm so used to it in the TG16 original that i miss it.Btw mark if you enjoy Ys Chronicles that much you should review Ys The Oath in Felghana next,it's a such a solid remake of Ys III.

Remastered version of the Ys Eternal for the PSP. While this game got a port from PSP to PC.

After part 2, please review Ys: Oath in Felghana. Ys I and II Chronicles is good, Ys Seven is great, but Ys: Oath in Felghana is phenomenal.

No Strategic Battle Screen? Wow, pretty cool, reminds me of Zelda II and Castlevania (Metroid Style) only that those were sidescrollers.
Great Review. Too bad I don't own a psp anymore. There just wasn't a steady enough flow of games to keep me interested. Maybe I'll buy the new one to crack and make a decent system with good specs. =)

I've just picked this up on PSN where it's only just come out here in Europe (no UMD release for us I'm afraid). I loved the first game on the Master System and I'm glad to see that they ironed out a lot of problems for the remake.
In fact, I loved it so much, I've now ordered an import version of Oath in Felghana from the States. PSN just doesn't do it justice.
