It was an emotional way of watching you create my side table, it's amazing to watch you work and create something that will be my own. All the steps you took to make it, thought processes. You really put your heart and soul into it, I wish I had the words to say how much I love your work and how they will always be cherished in my home. Having 3 of your masterpieces I feel very fortunate. Thank You Shane

It’s kind of like having a home movie and cool the way tech can help us see and appreciate all the thought and effort that went into something like this. Out of curiosity how did you get connected? Looking through etsy makes me question how many sellers peel off a “Made In… Mexico/Vietnam/China/etc” sticker before shipping the product out so just curious how you found him given that you aren’t located anywhere near each other?

I first saw his video Super Rare Burl Turned into One Of A Kind Table. which I loved and the video was 6 months old already so I thought it was long gone, But Shane still had it on Etsy so I bought it right away, so it went from there, @@inmyimage1081

I’m 70 and have been woodworking for well over 45 years. Of course, I’ve seen huge changes in that time from tools like the router to modern glues. What doesn’t change is skill. It seems to me that you have the aptitude and the desire to grow your skills. Absolutely wonderful to see on a young person.
But woodworking skill can only take you so far. The really complete furniture maker adds design to his skill set. This piece shows that you care about design and want to put design over ease of make. That is again the fight way in my view.
I would gladly have that piece in my house. It’s already a very eclectic selection of pieces from mid 18th century through Arts and Crafts to very modern. The only thing that unites them is that they please my wife and I.
There are 2 phrases in my shop which I need to look at:
Patience and precision leads to perfection. In other words, take your time; my body won’t take long in the shop and I’m learning to stop before I get achy and try and rush something
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. This is about remembering that, although I can make the most intricate pieces, doesn’t mean that they are the best looking pieces. Look for simplicity and let the timber and design do the work.
Keep up the good work and keep that desire to try something new.

I have been designing and manufacturing custom built furniture for 47 years and I enjoy the process to this day. As a seasoned pro my advice to anyone planning to make a career of this is DO NOT ever tell your potential clients you have never done something before as they get a bit nervous and it makes you look like an amateur. Only show your best work to clients and the most important tip I could give is never promise to complete something within a specific time frame. Always give yourself an extra day or two in case something happens like you have to get jigsaw blades or wait on gold leaf! Oh and don't give clients too many choices as most do not know about furniture design and can get overwhelmed. Keep it simple and avoid compound angles as your head may explode! Too complicated....

  • @Llohr

    Looks good!
Ideas (what you might call constructive criticism, though I wouldn't consider any of it _criticism,_ per se):
If you ever do that gold-leafed hole through the legs on another project again, maybe try chamfering (or rounding) the hole.
I would probably have rotated the legs a bit so that they were further apart at the concave end of the table as well. That part of the table looks as if someone, or something, were meant to "belly-up" to it. Having the legs more open on that side would enhance that look, and give it a more "intentional" feel.
That would make the whole piece look more unified, and less like a tabletop bolted on to some legs. Slanting legs outward (or maybe inward, I'd have to see a mock-up to see if it would look good) might also help with that.

I just found your channel. I'm age 22 and did gymnastics for 14 years. I started work at age 13 with a property management company to pay for gymnastics academy fees. It started as demolition and cleaning up but then into fixing furniture and getting creative. An older guy was into woodworking and he paid me for help with lumber and muscling things around. I did these jobs a few summers and found the woodworking part the most fun. I unfortunately got severely beat up at age 16 but was extremely muscular and outlasted them having their fun. But that started me focusing my attention to bodybuilding and building rock hard abs and all that got me moving out of gymnastics by age 18 at high school graduation. Then pandemic hit my first year of community college. I found work at Menards in their buildings materials section. I got noticed in the lumber yard by some young guys in construction who got me a full time job with their construction company. I've been learning a lot about framing and recently into dry walling. BUT I've not lost my desire to build nice furniture. I'm still figuring out what to do in life but videos like yours are great to see. I like the bean because it's similar to the Bean in Chicago. I know that there is a huge need for guys like me in the construction trades and feel that is where I'm meant to be in some way or other. I can see me joining a woodworking company some day. Keep up what you're doing, When I get time I'll check out more of your videos. And be careful as you continue to be "stupid" at the band saw.

Pretty Dang Cool! I really loved the legs -- gold leaf against dyed oak is gorgeous!
And I even learned stuff! (Didn't know there was a pronunciation for the "word" OG.)
Of topic -- those aren't baby mountains -- if the Rockies ever live long enough to be as old as the Appalachians, they'll be rounded and a lot smaller, too.
Good to see fine work and design from the old stomping grounds -- I used to live in Mont Alto and loved spending uncountable amounts of time in the same mountains.
    Cheers!

I like beans. But I happen to love designing /planning/ seeing the end results. Worked as a “picture framer for 20 years. Framed more than just canvases and flat art. Framed people’s treasures like baby outfits. Special tools. Shadow box type. As long as the people loved and I felt I did them right.. … it was a success. Often we are our own worst critics in such artistic endeavors. I love walnut even though I hated picking up the nuts…in Willamette valley area in Oregon actually grew up in a town that used to be called Walnut City! Keep exercising your creativity as it will grow and stay energized. I loved what I did! I have done so many different things besides framing. It was in me from a very young age! The black was a great choice as it made the wood grain on top pop and the gold worked well. And I love beans. It’s a great combo and appeals to the eye in my opinion. Every artist grows their talent even through failures they are all learning experiences that even the best have travelled that road.

I make custom furniture for clients and my own designs. What you said about designing over making is exactly how I feel. I love designing but don’t actually love the process of making something perfectly. I do love the prototype phase and making sure a design ‘works’. That’s why when I was setting up my business I had my first goal as getting someone in to do the making for me so I can concentrate on designing and then prototyping things and making sure the process is there for someone else to make. My designs are generally in metal so it’s slightly different but I would say this was a real turning point for me.

After watching to the end, this design is super cool! I feel like with adjustments it would make a super cool, modern and ergonomic desk design!

I loved it very much, as I'm also a wood worker. It's an unusual look and that's why it's so interesting. I loved that you used gold leaf, a bit of pizzazz is always great! Keep it up, as you truly do create quite well. Blessings to You and All the Very Best, from me, Rachel Walsh. ~~~ ~~~

The bean shape is pretty unusual and I can't decide whether I like it or not, but man do I love this footing with the gold accent 👍 It enlightens the whole table an amazing way. Congratulations !

Great video and design. People from Massachusetts also use the state abbreviation when they say where they’re from ie Boston, Mass.

Not sure if I've ever commented on a video before but just had to say the way you described why you woodwork couldn't be any more dead on to the way I feel. Just begun woodworking/carving and it's a way to settle the incessant creative mind, in a grounding medium. So calming. Cool to hear it from someone else. Subscribed and liked, thanks for the video!
