  • This video features the track that I've written to represent Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai) in the revamped edition of my book 'Giants of Bass', which will be released in March 2017 through www.basslinepublishing.com
    This track was written in the style of the first three Jamiroquai albums, all of which featured Stuart's ground-breaking bass work. The following musicians played on this piece: Will Beavis (drums), Tom O'Grady (keyboards) and Steve Banks (guitar). I recorded the bass part using my custom built Sei 5-string, which is the instrument used in the video.
    You can find out more about the forthcoming Giants of Bass book on the following videos:

    I've always found Zender to be one of the most underrated bassist. Jamiroquai is such an amazing band

      Underrated in whose book?... I don't think so, he just never fit the ''system'' and had his own rules and prerogatives, but is highly recognized amongst musicians throughout the world... I guess

    • @ElHeffJeff

      @@lmgarrone7976 Underrated it definitely the wrong word to use. Maybe underappreciated by casual listeners, especially those without a good sound system, but even then he's hard to ignore...

    i learned two albums of bass lines from Stu Zender. The music from those two Jamiroquai albums gives me the weirdest feeling. Like rich, city life, in the seventies. He was such a big inspiration for me musically when i played bass.

      That sound was VERY inspirational. I was in 3rd grade when Traveling Without Moving came out (I'm showing my age here... lol) and I fell in love with it then. Fast forward to my freshman year and I find the High Times: Singles 1992-2006 and my mind was blown. From then I went back to listen to Emergency on Planet Earth and Return of the Space Cowboy albums and that sound was such a game changer for me. That particular sound led me to actually find out about Tom actually :).

    Fabulous and funky groove. Thank you for this music and please share more of your fantastic tunes with us. Reminds me of the early Jamiroquai times with Stuart and Toby. Really a bummer that Jamiroquai in the early line up no longer exists and Jay went for the clean electronic commercial sh...t, but hey it's his choice to do his own thing and leaving a lot of the originals fans longing to the old Jamiroquai groove.

    great playing but it reminds me a lot more of nick fyffe's style. stu was known for a sort of heavily compressed sound with a syncopated jaco-esque style but with a lot less reliance on continuous 16th note runs. also, way more muted slapping to replicate a kick drum pattern.

    • @StuartClayton
      @StuartClayton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Respectfully, I don't agree. Tracks such as 'If I Like It, I Do It', 'Music of the Mind', 'Whatever It is I just Can't Stop' are all busy sixteenth note-based lines, and were the inspiration for this track. This piece does not have any continuous 16th note runs, there is a lot of space in both the A and B sections.
      Thank you for the kind words though!

    • @romulus_
      @romulus_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see the similarities with If I Like It, I Do It. Perhaps it comes down to tone and his particular emphasis on certain notes and use of silence. Listening again, I hear a smoother version of Paul Jackson, which is a similar style to Stu's.
