I've taken the Missouri into battle when I was younger. This movie is extremely accurate. It can take hits like no other, especially if you look back into the 1969 alien invasion. Do your research.

An anchor swing is actually a real naval tactic. It's called club hauling. It was used by sailing ships. The 50000 ton Missouri could not have pulled it off.
I think it's refreshing to see the full potential of Modern Military might faring well for once against unknown adversaries such as monsters, aliens, killer robots and what not. Watching that 16-inch cannon capable of doing some serious damage to that alien ship is a nice touch.
Modern Military? That ship is 1940s tech. How is that Modern? Isn't the point of the movie that Modern Military is just total BS and the last real fighting men were those who fought in WWII and maybe also Korea? I mean, the ship that is actually beating the aliens is crewed by old men drafted from a nursing home... Or did we watch a different movie? ;)
KuyAurelian Technically, I would considered the modernized USS Missouri armed with tomahawk cruise missiles somewhat as being modern despite being completely out of service. The 16-inch cannon is still not something you want to go up against anytime soon, even the Iraqis during the Gulf War were scared of them. Plus it ain't just the WWII/Korean War Veterans that were on board the ship, Lt. Hopper along with his crews and the JMSDF also had to help out and coordinate the ship together with these guys as well. Hence the part where they had to bring the last remaining shell which weighs 1,900 lbs shell across the hall all the way to the main cannon!!
Yes, modernized it was, but in that scene it fires how many Tomahawks again? And makes use of said modernizations how much? I stand by my original point. It's not really about modern military being capable, since the whole opening part is about showing how hopelessly outclassed the modern military is. And a cavalry charge is still just as deadly as it was in the 1700s and an arrow through the chest is still rather lethal. ;)
Sure, today you got long range missiles, fighter planes, torpedoes, and all the high tech weapons. But NOTHING is as badass as a broadside attack from a battleship with nine 16Inch guns.
That is one impressive ship! The part at 1:15 is the best part of the entire movie. The first time I saw that bombardment, it sent chills down my spine. It's too bad there are no active battleships in service anymore.

Steve Forsyth If you rewatch the movie (or listen to the director's commentary) you can see that the aliens were not here to destroy earth...or even to attack. They are not even equipped for a military operation. Not everything is known about them...but they are some form of a crashed scientific expedition that has lost its communications, and wants to hide in the water until it can figure out how to phone home...and miscommunication and the navy mess up their plans, more or less. So its like a science or mining group making due with minimal weaponry... They're not entirely peaceful but they're not very warlike, either. And then it all escalates and gets out of hand...
Those might be scenes of our aliens attacking other planets. At any rate, its far from a clear statement that the aliens were here merely for refuge. Alien mind melds I guess can be confusing.

Think about it, how much more damage could a space rock going *light speed* do compared to the mere 2,500 feet per second of a 16" round. Before a space ship could even power up its "light speed engines", the armor or futuristic space shields, need to be able to protect the hull from the rocks and dust that the ship will fly through.

Even carrier Admirals acknowledge that battleships have greater firepower within their damage radius. 1000 shells, 9 guns at 2 shells per minute. Carriers--up to 100 planes, not all of them for combat, launching maybe 4 at a time and you have to wait for their return between sorties. Penetration is also a factor--missiles can penetrate how much concrete again? The 16" shells can break through 30 ft. Carriers have greater range. That was the tradeoff.
Battleships do not cost three times as much as aircraft carriers. An Aircraft carrier is a floating city with thousands of marines/crew members, that costs a fortune to maintain, and require specialized training for aircraft/pilots/nuclear technology. Every aircraft used on an aircraft carrier also costs a fortune, as well as the ordinance used to strike from them. A battleship could level an entire city from 20 miles away with sustained 16 inch bombardment over a period of a week for far less cost than sending pilots/cruise missiles. The main usage of an aircraft carrier is simply for range, nothing more. The reason for the disbanding of battleships is actually to a change in war doctrine, battleships cause collateral damage, and people today don't have the stomach for war, and the idea of civilian losses frighten them.
Why do aliens who attack us always want to kill us off up close and personal when they can safely do it from orbit? Aliens: Has highly advance tech and weapons with space ships. Humans: No space ships. Aliens strategy: A ground assault.

Bring back the Battleships The problem with that is I can't think of any resource found on earth that aliens couldn't find or easily grow/make themselves. If it's ores like iron and copper etc then the same materials and ores can be found all over our solar system seeing as all the planets, moons and asteroid fields etc were made from the same debris that make up our planet too. If it's something like trees or water? Seriously? How hard is it to grow a tree? The moon Europa around Jupiter is made up of mostly ice and the size of a moon! There is even ice on Mars. If they just want to move in to our planet without destroying the environment then they still can easily take us out from orbit by just introducing a virus with no cure or at least hard to cure. Shouldn't e too hard for them to find something like it with their advance tech/science. Hell there are viruses now on earth that we humans can't find a cure for or hard to over come once infected. Infact when I think about it is there any reason for an alien race to WANT to kill us off?
You know it must have been terrifying being on that alien ship. Everything up until now has been going pretty well, everytime you shoot one of those Earth ships they go down. But now, this thing comes around the bend, five times the size of what you've been fighting with guns as big as the ships you've just fought. So thing fires on you, tearing apart a whole section of your ship. So you fire back, you hit it and sigh in relief, that thing couldn't possibly...but no. That ship is still there. And now it's pissed off. Might as well shoot yourself in the head if you're an alien.
I was on the USS Lassen (DDG-82) so I gotta give it up for thee USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) for takin' out 3 of those alien aircraft before goin' down. But when the USS Missouri came in with that sliding assault I had to pump my fist in the air. That was awesome. Navy all day

I was never in the military (turned down due to heart issues) but, from the scene where they kicked over that vending machine on out had me grinning fit to split. Caleb Mayfield Caleb, not true my friend . Modern shells can't do a damn thing to Missouri's armour -- not a shell from the 5 inch gun, which is the biggest they have now. In fact, it's arguable that a anti-ship missile wouldn't punch a hole in the armor either. But that doesn't matter, all the missile has to do is do a top down strike, or smash the superstructure. This question has been asked many times in numerous military forums, and the answer is always the same. I encourage you to look it up if you doubt, but it's a decent question for sure...
Smith Andrew We have an 82 year old man who is an Eagle Scout and is still active with my son's Boy Scout Troop. He can outbike, outswim, outrun, every teen and adult. He runs 5 miles a day, does over 500 push ups and sit ups each day. He spent 20+ years in the Marines and still proudly wears the insignia and wears the haircut. He is a very nice man, but I fear for any man to cross his path. He may just be the one to take his perfectly shined shoe and kick up your rear end until you taste the wax on it. Only reason Battle ship are not in real use to day is because of modern Air power and long rang mission. Upgrade a WW2 Battle ships with a defensive system to counter that, like say the USS North Carolina, and It will crush any modern day ship in a fight. Hell I would love for them to create a modern day battle ship with anti air defenses and Modern day long range guns, yes guns fuck missiles battle ships need big ass gun. Hell finish developing the rail gun and come up with a battle ship sized one and slap them on that will make the battle ship relevant again.

I liked this battle scene, but the whole idea of getting the Missouri battle ready in what? Less than an hour? Ridiculous. It would probably require at least a month, maybe two, in a Dry Dock. Those engines would have been frozen after so long without running. As for the gun turrets, don't get me started. Wouldn't even be able to find ammunition for those sixteen inch guns. Still, is a fun scene to watch. Rest of the movie is complete garbage with how inaccurate it all is.
And also the part about closing in to within less than a mile of the alien vessel to fire on it? Or that the anchor tugged the entire ship abruptly, etc... I liked the Michael Bay aspect of it, but man...

***** Modern Warships lack armor. They aren't nearly as heavily armored as a WW2 era Battleship. Modern ships rely on CIWS, counter-measures and mobility rather than armor. An Iowa is built to withstand fire from its own cannons. Those same cannons would fuck an Arleigh Burke class in half. Them being scouts means that they're not meant for full combat, and it shows. They're meant to come here, assess our strength, and phone home - that's why they deployed the Shield, to keep everyone out. For some reason, Regent ships are not visible on radar, and don't seem to have radar themselves, and I agree, that's pretty ridiculous. It might be that their own radar are jammed by the Shield though. The pin launchers do have quite a bit of range though, since they did fire at them from beyond the horizon.

Ok, in most of the Battleship movie stuff there is out there, for every one good comment, there is like 15-20 negative comments. Appreciate the movie for what it is, not for what it is not. It is a movie, not a documentary. Therefore, it's primary (if not sole) purpose is to provide entertainment, not realism. The sooner people learn this, the sooner life will get slightly better.

The HMS Warspite did something similar to a german destroyer, pointed all its 15 inch guns at the DD and fired...the destroyer literally ceased to exist.

I noticed that the first time I saw it. Did you notice when they were tracking the aliens in the water, the screen on the ship was configured to resemble the board game?. And those guns going off, taking that alien ship apart is by far the best part of the entire movie for me.

I think it's refreshing to see the full potential of Modern Military might faring well for once against unknown adversaries such as monsters, aliens, killer robots and what not. Watching that 16-inch cannon capable of doing some serious damage to that alien ship is a nice touch.
Modern Military? That ship is 1940s tech. How is that Modern? Isn't the point of the movie that Modern Military is just total BS and the last real fighting men were those who fought in WWII and maybe also Korea? I mean, the ship that is actually beating the aliens is crewed by old men drafted from a nursing home...

KuyAurelian Technically, I would considered the modernized USS Missouri armed with tomahawk cruise missiles somewhat as being modern despite being completely out of service. The 16-inch cannon is still not something you want to go up against anytime soon, even the Iraqis during the Gulf War were scared of them.
Plus it ain't just the WWII/Korean War Veterans that were on board the ship, Lt. Hopper along with his crews and the JMSDF also had to help out and coordinate the ship together with these guys as well. Hence the part where they had to bring the last remaining shell which weighs 1,900 lbs shell across the hall all the way to the main cannon!!

Steve Forsyth If you rewatch the movie (or listen to the director's commentary) you can see that the aliens were not here to destroy earth...or even to attack. They are not even equipped for a military operation. Not everything is known about them...but they are some form of a crashed scientific expedition that has lost its communications, and wants to hide in the water until it can figure out how to phone home...and miscommunication and the navy mess up their plans, more or less. So its like a science or mining group making due with minimal weaponry...
They're not entirely peaceful but they're not very warlike, either. And then it all escalates and gets out of hand...

For a ship flying at lightspeed, if they hit an asteroid- no even if they fly past a cloud of space *dust*, that grain-sized rock will destroy the ship faster than the Missouri's 16 inch guns could.
Think about it, how much more damage could a space rock going *light speed* do compared to the mere 2,500 feet per second of a 16" round.
Before a space ship could even power up its "light speed engines", the armor or futuristic space shields, need to be able to protect the hull from the rocks and dust that the ship will fly through.

Battleships do not cost three times as much as aircraft carriers. An Aircraft carrier is a floating city with thousands of marines/crew members, that costs a fortune to maintain, and require specialized training for aircraft/pilots/nuclear technology. Every aircraft used on an aircraft carrier also costs a fortune, as well as the ordinance used to strike from them.
A battleship could level an entire city from 20 miles away with sustained 16 inch bombardment over a period of a week for far less cost than sending pilots/cruise missiles. The main usage of an aircraft carrier is simply for range, nothing more. The reason for the disbanding of battleships is actually to a change in war doctrine, battleships cause collateral damage, and people today don't have the stomach for war, and the idea of civilian losses frighten them.

Bring back the Battleships The problem with that is I can't think of any resource found on earth that aliens couldn't find or easily grow/make themselves.
If it's ores like iron and copper etc then the same materials and ores can be found all over our solar system seeing as all the planets, moons and asteroid fields etc were made from the same debris that make up our planet too.
If it's something like trees or water? Seriously? How hard is it to grow a tree? The moon Europa around Jupiter is made up of mostly ice and the size of a moon! There is even ice on Mars.
If they just want to move in to our planet without destroying the environment then they still can easily take us out from orbit by just introducing a virus with no cure or at least hard to cure. You know it must have been terrifying being on that alien ship. Everything up until now has been going pretty well, everytime you shoot one of those Earth ships they go down. But now, this thing comes around the bend, five times the size of what you've been fighting with guns as big as the ships you've just fought. So thing fires on you, tearing apart a whole section of your ship. So you fire back, you hit it and sigh in relief, that thing couldn't possibly...but no. That ship is still there. And now it's pissed off. Might as well shoot yourself in the head if you're an alien.

How accurate are the scenes where the Missouri is made ready for battle and how accurate are the scenes on the Missouri when she is under her own power and fighting? I was never in the military (turned down due to heart issues) but, from the scene where they kicked over that vending machine on out had me grinning fit to split. I have no clue how many "Hell YEAH"s I uttered. I have no clue which I loved more, seeing those veterans on the Missouri or the Missouri herself.

. Modern shells can't do a damn thing to Missouri's armour -- not a shell from the 5 inch gun, which is the biggest they have now. In fact, it's arguable that a anti-ship missile wouldn't punch a hole in the armor either. But that doesn't matter, all the missile has to do is do a top down strike, or smash the superstructure.
This question has been asked many times in numerous military forums, and the answer is always the same. I encourage you to look it up if you doubt, but it's a decent question for sure...

He runs 5 miles a day, does over 500 push ups and sit ups each day. He spent 20+ years in the Marines and still proudly wears the insignia and wears the haircut. Only reason Battle ship are not in real use to day is because of modern Air power and long rang mission. Upgrade a WW2 Battle ships with a defensive system to counter that, like say the USS North Carolina, and It will crush any modern day ship in a fight. Hell I would love for them to create a modern day battle ship with anti air defenses and Modern day long range guns, yes guns fuck missiles battle ships need big ass gun. Hell finish developing the rail gun and come up with a battle ship sized one and slap them on that will make the battle ship relevant again.

I liked this battle scene, but the whole idea of getting the Missouri battle ready in what? Less than an hour? Ridiculous. It would probably require at least a month, maybe two, in a Dry Dock. Those engines would have been frozen after so long without running. As for the gun turrets, don't get me started. Wouldn't even be able to find ammunition for those sixteen inch guns. Still, is a fun scene to watch. Rest of the movie is complete garbage with how inaccurate it all is.
And also the part about closing in to within less than a mile of the alien vessel to fire on it? Or that the anchor tugged the entire ship abruptly, etc...

Sarge Rho Sigh, they might be scouts, that doesn't matter, they still have the technology to do absolutely ridiculous things, its in the film, the evidence is right there, if you don't believe that these scouts have the technology then you're clearly delusional, those scouts still beat modern destroyers even when the radar was still up at the beginning of the film, I keep telling you, I don't care if these guys are scouts of not, you can see the technology they possess, obviously the full invasion force will be even more advanced, but given the technology that these scouts have displayed and the feats they have achieved with this technology they shouldn't have lost against an 'armouhred' warship from world war 2 made mostly of wood. Those weapons the aliens had destroyed modern destroyers with more advanced armour in just a couple of shots, are you saying that modern metal alloys are superior to flammable and degradable wood?
***** Modern Warships lack armor. They aren't nearly as heavily armored as a WW2 era Battleship. Modern ships rely on CIWS, counter-measures and mobility rather than armor. An Iowa is built to withstand fire from its own cannons. Those same cannons would fuck an Arleigh Burke class in half.
Them being scouts means that they're not meant for full combat, and it shows. They're meant to come here, assess our strength, and phone home - that's why they deployed the Shield, to keep everyone out.
For some reason, Regent ships are not visible on radar, and don't seem to have radar themselves, and I agree, that's pretty ridiculous. It might be that their own radar are jammed by the Shield though. The pin launchers do have quite a bit of range though, since they did fire at them from beyond the horizon.

Ok, in most of the Battleship movie stuff there is out there, for every one good comment, there is like 15-20 negative comments. Appreciate the movie for what it is, not for what it is not. It is a movie, not a documentary. Therefore, it's primary (if not sole) purpose is to provide entertainment, not realism. The sooner people learn this, the sooner life will get slightly better.
If somebody could just loop 'Let's drop some lead on those mother..' for 3 hours, I'd greatly appreciate it lol

+legionbunny cite it pls. I know of no incident where a battleship drifted like that. Even the most agile battleship, the Yamato, had a turn radius of at least 700m.

+legionbunny The fact that alien ships survived a full broadside from an IOWA at that range is an impressive feat in itself, that would of oneshot any other warship. The HMS Warspite did something similar to a german destroyer, pointed all its 15 inch guns at the DD and fired...the destroyer literally ceased to exist.
This movie is damn awesome, no matter what those fucking movie critiques said. The character development in this movie is also great and this scene can always make me jump with excitement

I noticed that the first time I saw it. Did you notice when they were tracking the aliens in the water, the screen on the ship was configured to resemble the board game?. And those guns going off, taking that alien ship apart is by far the best part of the entire movie for me.

Very true. I would pit that old battle wagon against most of the modern navy. Nothing against the modern navy but todays navy just isn't built to take the kind of sustained punishment that ship could dish out and take while doing it.
