My father was amazed that she did that (he knew her when she was shy). As she played she attracted a crowd. They all applauded when she finished playing and my father cried. I wish I had been there but they were shopping for my Christmas present. I have the memory of my father telling me about it and his eyes shinning in admiration.

The only way I've found to have less volume is to lower the lid of the grand. It will mute some sound, but usually, in a noisy room, there will be competing sound.
You can play quieter by applying less pressure to the keys, this does require some practice to preform well and may have the effect of altering a song's intended effect. There is also a pedal on the piano that facilitates this effect.
I think this room was created for piano music. The thing is on a stage! It won't kill those people to stop their mostly inane conversation and just listen to some uplifting sounds. It's good practice for our populace to learn how to listen to anything. It's almost a lost art.
