I tell ya, this guy was the best of all time. The microtones, the bends, the volume control, it wasn't about billion note shredding, he always knew that. I've heard guys who could emulate him a little, the "beckisms" and such, but he's the only guy who could freely improvise like this on a nightly basis. R.I.P. my friend. You left a legacy, you were the best.

I spent a day with Jeff at his home in England. I noticed a framed letter from Charles Mingus (composer of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ) on a wall. It roughly said thanks for recording my song,. Would you like to record more of my compositions? This is one of my favorite versions of Jeff performing "Pork Pie Hat,." It's tough and full of surprises. It demonstrates that the blues can be as modern as the time they are being played.

You've heard all the rest, now behold the best! Mr Jeff Beck. I'm proud to say I knew that since the late 60s when Truth and Beckola came out. At 15, I knew no one out there could touch him. Through the decades, other guitarists became household names that even your grandmother heard of. Jeff didn't reach that level of commercial success. Only until more recent times has he reached his proper status. For me, since I was a young teen, he's consistently been my #1 guitar genius. Screw the million note per second shredders. They waste their time. Jeff can tear your heart out with one note. He will always be my #1 musical inspiration. God please look after Jeff Beck. That kind of talent is God given. 💔💔💔💔💔

I remember seeing him with BBA at the Oval Cricket Ground Concert in 1972. Not sure what number he was playing but he suddenly just threw in a lick from the old Yardbirds number, "Little Games". It was just a couple of seconds but it was the highlight of the day (actually any live gig ever). My friend and I just looked at each other, jaws dropped, marveling at what we had just witnessed. Not into who was the best ever but I do not know anyone that had done that to me before or since. He was a master. And boy, will he be missed.

I'm still struggling with the reality of accepting the fact that Jeff Beck is no longer among the living.
As selfish as that may sound?
He was the best of the holy trinity of Beck, Clapton, and Page in the 60s and 70s.
He was the one who was most in tune with melodic structure. It's one of the most challenging things for a guitarist.
Most of us guitarists learned the minor and major pentatonic scales and their respective patterns early, and it served us well to learn to jam to world music, blues, and rock.
But to truly understand what Jeff Beck did throughout his career was to be melodic and sing with the guitar, of course depending on the musical situation.
Today I was working with a more advanced student on how to pick out melodies.
I told him to listen to Jeff Beck's recordings of 'She's a Woman', 'A Day in the Life', and 'Over the Rainbow'. What he did with those tunes was nothing short of genius. I went on about identifying the key and going with the proper key and scales to find the right notes. The notes will be there and it's your job to find those melodies within those notes of the scale.
I had him pick out the melody of "Over the Rainbow"...he kind of struggled to find the notes...then I told him, "think of the notes in the key of G, and you'll find them."
Sure enough...notes all natural, with the exception of F#.
    Then...he found them.
I'm so sorry to have heard this news so suddenly.
Mr. Beck...I had the privilege to witness your virtuosity live when you toured with Santana in the 90s.
RIP Jeff Beck...your legacy will remain with us forever, and we'll never forget you.

Ty for your comments...I got kicked out of the band class for being poor at 9. I vowed to only teach myself and never knew a thing. When I heard Jeff Beck I just knew there was something special. I studied him particularly but I sing. And finally learned piano, my favorite instrument. I always felt on the path, but never knew. I think you just really helped. I knew he was different.

NOBODY can or will do what he did with a guitar. Setting apart genre, when it comes to creativity and a completely individualistic approach to the guitar and music, there was 1) Jeff Beck, and 2) (fill in with with the names of thousands of truly great guitarists, from Segovia to Django, Clapton, the three Kings, Hendrix, Fred Frith, SRV, Garcia, Albert Lee, Joe Pass, Clarence White, Allman, Iommi, etc etc etc.

So true man! He was one of one and there is a reason no one can sound like him, because you have to be Jeff Beck to sound like Jeff Beck. Others invented their own styles, but Jeff is so unique in his style, it is not able to be copied. Greg Koch could possibly do it, as there is a video of him appreciating Jeff from a year ago or so, and he could really manipulate the guitar swells and whammy bar to sound just like Jeff, but he said something like "that is why I don't play like this, because I end up sounding like someone trying to copy Jeff Beck, and there is no one like Jeff Beck."

Well the guitar was JB’s voice. More so than EC after he started singing more. He never kept a vocalist long enough to keep it going big like Zep or VH, so not as many people heard his stuff. But between the death of Hendrix and rise of EVH JB was probably the pre eminent jazz rock guitarist. Less rock and more fusion style jazz than other rock guitarists.

To me since day one when I was introduced to JB (first in 1976 heard Wired right of the presses, then everything else within weeks) it was always the tones, the note selection and expression. Duh, that's what all musicians do but with Jeff he was like a singer, a sax player, a violinist as well as a guitar player. Plenty of other guys could out shred him, SRV, EVH, etc, but there's only ever going to be one Beck.
