For some reason the part that always gets me is that part at 0:53 as he is pulling on the gloves and going in to save everyone. No hesitation, no regrets, just doing what had to be done. An act that was both Vulcan and Human.

If ever served in the miltary you understand Spocks reasoning.

In case anyone is wondering what exactly Spock was fixing in the engine room:
Scotty had “to take the mains off the line” due to radiation. Spock put “the mains back online” to give the Enterprise enough power to use it’s warp drive.
The “mains” Scotty is referring to were the dilithium crystals. These crystals allow a starship’s matter / antimatter fuel to mix and provide main power to the ship. When the radiation levels became too high, the dilithium crystals have to be taken offline as the crystals are not designed to operate in high radiation areas. The crystals are contained with a cylinder in a sealed off room that contains radiation dampeners. These dampeners slowly absorb radiation and reduce it to levels that allow people to access the crystal pedestal. Because the Enterprise was operating on partial main power, the loss of the dilithium crystals meant the ship did not have enough power to use the warp engines.
Spock made the decision to sacrifice himself by reaching in to the pedestal and physically put the crystals back online. Sadly, the radiation pouring out of the pedestal infused Spock with a fatal dose. Not even a radiation suit would have prevented this from happening.

Spock's empty chair (@4:20) reminds me of my late sister, who died not long before I first saw this in the theater
Hard to believe it's been 40 years!!!

Anyone besides myself miss Leonard Nimoy? He really played the heck out of Spock. Remember….

I didn't have a father when I was small, but I had Kirk and Spock. People have done worse with role models.

Grew up watching Leonard Nimoy in search of series. Also realized later he was in invasion of the bodysnatchers 1978 version.

Spock's knowledge of the warp drive was needed here and in the TMP. I've always found it "fascinating" he knew the ship better than Scotty. 😃

spock was chief science officer. chief science officer might have better theoretical grasp of the engineering systems but maybe not as good at the technical application vs scotty who is definitely better at the practical applications.

No, he knew what had to be done and that Mr. Scott was probably too sick to do it.

Not a bad way to go I suppose. Imagine his reaction if he had seen them warp away!

Something that I think would have made this scene more real is to see the engineers frantically trying to different stations trying to fix the warp drive - to no avail, of course. Instead, they're calmly walking around like their lives aren't in danger.

    • @DarkDragonPath
      @DarkDragonPath 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, to everyone else aboard besides the bridge crew, they probably thought they were in no immediate danger, having just disabled Khan's ship and were about to bring him into custody again. No need to rush a bad situation into a worse one. Also, as nobody appeared to be monitoring the communication console, Kirk's hails to Scotty and Engineering for warp power in an impossible time frame went unanswered.
However, I do agree seeing the extras playing engineers with a bit more hustle in there step, especially with a seriously wounded ship on their hands would have been appreciated.

The Enterprise is so badly damaged, it doesn't even look like it could hit FULL impulse, because she looks like she's flying/limping away so slowly, it also hurts.

Often forgotten, if even known at all, the last words of Khan Noonien Singh were the same last words of Captain Ahab from Charles Dickens's novel Moby Dick. That book was among others on Kahns ship which may have been noticed when Captain Terrell and Mr. Checkoff were on board.

@jessnyus 1 year, and you're the first one to comment. Yes. If course it's Herman Melville. I had been having a conversation earlier that day with someone, and I asked if he even knew who wrote the book. He said Charles Dickens. So, I took it a step further to see if anyone would correct me. Congratulations. You're the first one. And only one so far. Gonna leave the post up with the error. Let's see how long you hold the title of the ONLY one to correct it. 👍

Though Captain Spock told Dr. McCoy that he's not human when he was heading towards the radiation filled reactor room to get the Enterprise out of the Mutara Nebula and out of range from the Reliant before the Genesis device stolen by Khan explodes, McCoy was worried that Spock can't resist the radiation long enough because of him being half-human on his mother's side. Spock had to make McCoy unconscious and mind-meld with him before saving the ship and everyone on board. Even if Admiral Kirk got told by McCoy after waking up that Spock's in the reactor room filled with radiation to save the ship from danger, Spock would've disobeyed Kirk's order to stop, but there was no other way to save the ship before it would be too late.

In a rewatch. And I just noticed something! The two times Kirk asks where the count down is Savak replies 2 minutes 10 seconds. The next is 3 minutes 20 seconds. Uhoh... maybe they're traveling at 88 mph and having a temporal problem.

It's time FROM Kirk's mark. They're counting up from 0 to the encoded 4 minutes in the Genesis device.

Kirk has them start a timer, like a stopwatch. It’s counting up to 4 minutes or whatever, then the bomb explodes.
