You have just changed the way I thought about doing things. All this time I was worrying on what to charge for my work and approach people and what not, all while I dont even have the portfolio to show for it. Thank you a lot for this!!!🙏
Glad to help Marwan! I can totally relate as I’ve done the same thing before. The key is to get out there, build that portfolio and then the work will come :) go get em!
Your point is so valid that we need to learn all the many aspects of photography and shooting for free gives us access to build relationships that we wouldn't otherwise given the oppurtunity if we started charging when one does not have the experience, portfolio or business smarts.
Thanks for all the advice, dude! Been wondering about this lately since I started shooting for free for a small online show with local rock musicians 😁🎸 i would've liked to get some money right away, but I think the experience and friends i'm making are way better than that!
I have shot hundreds of people mostly for free - I have a nice portfolio ... I could charge way more but none of those I shoot would have ever paid a photographer - and I like to pick and choose who or what I shoot ... luckily I'm retired and don't need the money
I guess we have all seen these "pro" photographers asking in a forum: "I'm shooting a wedding. What lens should I use, and how much should I ask for payment?" To learn how to do the job should be basic. And I might just add that it's not the camera that makes the pictures - it's the photographer. The only thing you get by buying a new "super-camera" and the most expensive lenses, is the extra cost, and possibly sharper and more detailed crap photos - if you didn't take the time to learn how to shoot ;)

Agreed with the concepts conveyed here. Random - what iPad app are you using for the whiteboard overlay?
