Idk why but Gabimaru’s perseverance and drive to be with his wife was so compelling. It was so simple yet beautiful to see. Him overcoming most challenges in his way just to get back to someone who might not exist. Definitely one of my favorite protagonists
the ending with them just living happy and peaceful (with the confirmation that yui DOES exist) is honestly one of the most comforting and wholesome endings i’ve seen in a manga that’s rife with violence and killing, and the fact that a guy who’s like dead inside and yearns for death found a purpose and reason in living because of a person he loves is just beautiful. those panels near the end with him just sleeping and finally being comfortable and safe in their home is really sweet. for the few panels yui has been featured in, it’s so nice to see how she’s presented to be so likeable and just an overall calming presence that most people yearn for in life and relationships. their relationship is the epitome of peak domesticity and the ideal of a happy married life with the person you love the most in the world. it’s a breath of fresh air among the other mangas where unnecessary drama are added in to create tension. he loves his wife wholeheartedly, and only has eyes for her, and he never fails to mention that. it’s the type of understated romance with stability and security with both individuals that i wish to see more not only in shonen manga, but other genres tbh. i envy that kind of love so much.
I like Gabimaru more than Itadori and Denji, but all three of them are great shonen MC’s in my eyes (I really like Deku and Asta too, since you mentioned it, but they’re nothing to the Hollow imo). The ending they gave him is one of the most satisfying endings I’ve seen in shonen, definitely for a shonen MC at least imo 👍

All imo 👍 as for Yuji and Denji I’d put both in S, but on the much lower spectrum (not because I don’t think they’re great, I’ve just seen a bit better imo like Yusuke, Kenshin, Ichigo, Eren, Gabimaru, Mob, Gon, Luffy, Naruto, Light, Edward, etc etc)

Yeah, MHA is flawed, but it's universe has amazing potential, and most of the character designs also have a lot of potential and uniqueness to them, even side-characters (With a few tweaks to hero outfits and names of course-) But then you look at the fandom and realize why MHA has gotten so much flak directed towards it. I'm ashamed to even say I even remotely like the series. I agree with you on the 🤢🤮🤮part wholly 100%
Hell’s Paradise is such a great story and it has such an interesting lore and power system, probably one of my favorites I’ve come across. For some reason that I can’t explain though Shion is the best character of the manga for me. We need more shounen manga, and manga in general, like this one, seriously. Also very high up there on the list of best characters from recent shounen are some of the characters from Vanitas no Carte (which is by the same mangaka as Pandora Hearts which I’m still waiting on a video of you for) and Kei Yonagi from Act Age (such a shame the creator of that one had to choose to be such a scumbag…)
When the news came out about the writer for Act Age, my foolish self thought to check out the manga out of somewhat morbid curiosity. I am now depressed every time I’m reminded of that series cuz it would’ve been great 🥲

One of the pages that stayed with me was him saying through tears that "Even as I watched a loved one die, I made the right choice" and refusing to retreat from a life threatening battle because he had to watch a dear friend rush to his death in order to buy time, just so he could live. He is such an amazing character and one of the best in this already beautiful cast of characters
Out of all “new gen” I’d say Hells Paradise easily has the best cast of characters as of now. The way the cast is so well fleshed out and developed in 127 chapters is nuts. Not to mention the beautiful themes and narratives executed.

If it ends in anyway without Shiggy dying it’s gonna like Obito getting Talk no jutsu’d. Shiggy is literally a mass murder and is no way able to be redeemed at this point. Also just to name a few characters on par with Shiggy, try Gojo, Makima, Yuji and then the potentially other riding antags coming up. Shiggy might have his spot now, but depending on the competition he has AND how the final arc is going, might be dethroned.

Gabimaru goes through such a good arc. He learns, against all odds, what is truly important in life. I really loved how he showed everyone in the end how much fighting it takes to keep some normalcy in life, especially when one's life has always been abnormal and horror incarnate.
This manga was a pretty good read. I also like Gabimaru because he maintains the “man on a mission” mood without feeling too serious. My only slight gripe with the manga is that around mid point the meridian stuff felt a bit too lengthy. Hopefully the anime will find a way to balance that bit out with more action scenes or something.
Hells paradise is a great series to collect because, the volumes go up to 13, the covers are vibrant and some are actually painted, the story places a spin on the story of the fountain of youth by bringing inmates into it, and the spines look amazing
Great video and wholehearted agree with you. What I personally love about Gabimaru is his tenderness. He's a scary good killer, absolutely, but also an emotionally gentle person. It's all because his wife was able to show him unconditional compassion. The beauty of his character is that even if he's a killer, even if he possesses a dark history, he can bring happiness into the world and others can bring a little light into his world.

Though the story, I admit, is kinda a repetition of what we've seen many times. I personally love the story and the conclusion. Now this may be off topic but I'll never forgive Shonen Jump for Axing Ayashimon. Made by the same author of Jigokuraku. That series was beginning to become interesting and they botched it up.
I mean, which story is not a repeat of something that has already been done before nowadays? It’s the execution that matters and this one handled that perfectly I dare say ^^
Fr they axed a series that had the trope of an old bum knowing the secret to unleashing inner potential power. There are only two other series I know of that do this well, spawn and 20th century boys

Unlike most shonen mcs it actually makes you root for him, like would he able to see his wife? Is his wife even alive? Will he get to her in one piece? I mean it's those type of stories to just leave you with a bitter sweet conclusion. Most shonen mcs you'll know there won't be much terrible happening to them cause you already know that guy will live to keep the series going so you'll end up rooting for side characters.

why i like gabimaru is because how close he is to killua i love a character who is born into expectations and live the life with it but mourning for their own identity and peace. Gon is like gabimarus wife being the thing that both characters cling too and their humanity

Personally right now I enjoy Ken Takakura and Ayase Momo from Dandadan the most of any new ongoing shonen MCs. Although I do like Gabimaru and denji, but not a huge fan of yuji itadori.
The sickest series dude. The way gabimaru & aza chobe grit their teeth and push back against insurmountable odds, so hype every time. I know it's kind of a trope but it's just executed so well here. I'd say 9/10 without a doubt.

The fact that ever single character’s end to their story is them achieving some sort of genuine paradise despite the cruelty of the hellish world is incredibly well done. The themes of Yin and Yang, tranquility in a storm, and the togetherness of what it means to be whole is genuinely why I think hells paradise and it’s characters are on par with some of the best shonen.
Record of Ragnarok was my first manga (thanks) but Jigokuraku was my first favorite manga and the whole reason I kept reading other series. It's the only one I actually own physical copies of. Gabimaru is unquestionably still one of my favorite characters and I'm so excited for the adaptation.
you might like Tenkaichi: Nihon Saikyou Bugeisha Ketteisen, its basically Record of Ragnarok but better. Instead of god vs human, its more of real life famous japanese and non japanese during sengoku period fight each other in death battle to decide who will be new Shogun. Tiny spoiler alert, in this universe, Nobunaga managed to unite Japan under his rule.
Sengoku Youko is def the most underrated shonen imo. I haven’t even finished reading it, but the amount of character development gets surpasses manga much longer.
As a newly wed husband who who is currently apart from my wife because of outside circumstances that neither her or I could control. I respect Gabimarou a great deal and sympathize with his predicament of returning to his wife.

I really wanted ti get into Jigokuraku, the art's gorgeous and the monster designs were amazing but the logic leaps required for the plot and treatment of the female lead just put me right off it. The main character was indeed really cool though.
same situation as the cartoon show gravity falls honestly. instead of being milked for some unnecessary plot points that would make the story nonsensical and convoluted and just twisting all over the place, i like it when authors recognize when to stop and wrap it up to completion. it makes for a bittersweet feeling where you want more but you also know that loose ends are tied up, and i prefer that than to be frustrated and grow boredom and dissatisfaction to hell’s end with super uber mega long arcs that aren’t needed.
The reason I think Gabimaru is such a compelling character is because he *earned* his happy ending. He fought, quite literally, like his life depended on it, so he could get home to his wife.
I've never read it, but based on this video, he sounds a lot like (not calling a copy of) Zabuza from Naruto. A ninja raised in a village known for its hostility, depicted as an emotionless killer, who has been lying to himself about his emotions for another he pretended to only keep for their usefulness to him. Which is why this (very underrated) quote from Zabuza seems to fit this MC: "Say what we will, do what we will. In the end we shinobi are still just people after all...with feelings all-too-human. And I've lost...everything"
Hells Paradise is a difficult read for me personally though close to the end I saw what it was going for so I think it paid of wouldn't mind rereading it but not in a rush to

Totally agree. I like how a lot of the newer shonen series feel more like the older darker series like Fist of the North Star and Claymore.

The themes of Yin and Yang, tranquility in a storm, and the togetherness of what it means to be whole is genuinely why I think hells paradise and it’s characters are on par with some of the best shonen.
Record of Ragnarok was my first manga (thanks) but Jigokuraku was my first favorite manga and the whole reason I kept reading other series. It's the only one I actually own physical copies of. Gabimaru is unquestionably still one of my favorite characters and I'm so excited for the adaptation.
you might like Tenkaichi: Nihon Saikyou Bugeisha Ketteisen, its basically Record of Ragnarok but better. Instead of god vs human, its more of real life famous japanese and non japanese during sengoku period fight each other in death battle to decide who will be new Shogun.
Tiny spoiler alert, in this universe, Nobunaga managed to unite Japan under his rule.

Sengoku Youko is def the most underrated shonen imo. I haven’t even finished reading it, but the amount of character development gets surpasses manga much longer.

Hells paradise has so many of my favorite new gen characters it's such a good story
I love the characters in Hell’s Paradise, even the bad guy that I absolutely hated did things that made me go “whoa, this is so cool” lol

I really wanted ti get into Jigokuraku, the art's gorgeous and the monster designs were amazing but the logic leaps required for the plot and treatment of the female lead just put me right off it. The main character was indeed really cool though.
Honestly hell's paradise felt too short but at the same time it felt like if it was any longer then it wouldn't be as good.

same situation as the cartoon show gravity falls honestly. instead of being milked for some unnecessary plot points that would make the story nonsensical and convoluted and just twisting all over the place, i like it when authors recognize when to stop and wrap it up to completion. it makes for a bittersweet feeling where you want more but you also know that loose ends are tied up, and i prefer that than to be frustrated and grow boredom and dissatisfaction to hell’s end with super uber mega long arcs that aren’t needed.
jigokuraku has been my favorite manga ever since i read it, so people finally talking about how good gabi is is cool

The reason I think Gabimaru is such a compelling character is because he *earned* his happy ending. He fought, quite literally, like his life depended on it, so he could get home to his wife.

I've never read it, but based on this video, he sounds a lot like (not calling a copy of) Zabuza from Naruto.
A ninja raised in a village known for its hostility, depicted as an emotionless killer, who has been lying to himself about his emotions for another he pretended to only keep for their usefulness to him.
Which is why this (very underrated) quote from Zabuza seems to fit this MC: "Say what we will, do what we will. In the end we shinobi are still just people after all...with feelings all-too-human. And I've lost...everything"
