Thank you for interesting lesson, those beliefs are quite interesting, knocking on wood is especially cool, I think in the past, the wood used for home building and for furniture was locally sourced and people had close connection with wood and trees, exactly as you said - as a connection with ancestors. Today we are having a connection with IKEA maybe :)

Funny about the taking out the garbage at night superstition. I like doing everything at night but sleep sometimes 😂. But to me its wrong to believe in superstition. One of my favorite Bible verses is Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight. Proverbs 3:5 That is one of the many PROMISES God makes that are written in the Bible and I'm a firm believer.
Knocking on wood is an American belief also. Myself and others I work with will knock on wood if the word "quiet" is mentioned. 😊 i work in a hospital and we are a superstitious bunch.
