  • What does it take to move from a non-leverage bit to a LEVERAGE bit? How should it be used?
A leverage bit is made up of three main parts:
    1. Mouthpiece: the leverage point; it lays inside the horse's mouth
    2. Purchase: the piece that connects the headstall to the mouthpiece
    3. Shank: the piece that connects the mouthpiece to the rein
The leverage is dependent on the ratio of the length of the shank to the length of the purchase. 2:1 means the pressure you apply is doubled. For this reason, you want to lighten up your pressure when you are using a leverage bit.
When using a leverage bit, we should be going to more one-handed riding and using our legs more. The hands simply become the enforcer. For this reason, I like to have great body control in the snaffle and lifter before moving on to a leverage bit.
In part 4, we'll be talking about leverage bits with solid mouthpieces, and what type of bit to use in a kids' horse.
