    End of summer egg drop off is due to molt. Chickens (all birds) go through an annual molt. At this time all food and energy reserves are put towards growing new feathers not egg production. Egg production usually starts to pick up after the molt is finished and after the winter solstice. That's what we have observed on our homestead. Take good care and thanks for the video

    Not all breeds go through the summer and winter the same. It matters a lot on what breeds you have picked, there housing comfort and the environment you live in. Egg pumpers(egg layers only), egg layer dual purpose , exhibition, meat breed dual purpose, large or small, ect. Some breeds are just miserable in summer months and will slow down. Some are just miserable is winter months and will slow down. You should have shown us a lot more of what chickens you have. You probably got chickens that do much better in cooler climates is what I suspect. In the heat of the summer try giving them a shallow bath they can easily get into to cool there feet off with a patio block at the bottom, ice in their water, a lot more shade, water down some dirt they can roll around in and cool off under some shade the night before, don't give them sugar grains like corn or high protein in the summer which will create more heat for them to deal with. This will help them lay more eggs in summer just like a warmer coop and a higher corn diet does in winter. Comfortable chickens will always lay more eggs just like a good diet will.

    Chicken breeds that are slow molters, like orpingtons and wyandottes are generally light summer layers and heavier winter layers after the first molt (usually at 18 or so months). Hard fast molters are generally better summer layers and take a winter break till late January or so, when the light changes.

    At 1 time we had 30 chickens and they would lay all year around . My chickens never had a slow down period . And I think it was the minerals . We got so many eggs everybody around had eggs . We gave eggs to everybody. I was at the store and had like 12 dozen in the car and while pumping gas i was asking people if they wanted some free eggs. I did get the " This lady is crazy look" but hey free yard eggs are hard to give away . Seems people are afraid of yard eggs they would rather get them at the store. I sold the chickens when my husband had his stroke.

      Most new chick's have to be 6 mo or older to start laying with a long term laying of 18 months. Low winter lights will stop laying. Get a light and a timer so it will turn on at 4am to give the three to 5 hours of daylight. Be patient and socialize your birds.they need to feel safe with you. Wear the same hat and jacket to attend to them. Remember to be patience and you will be rewarded.

I was thinking people just say stuff they hear so we all just end up regurgitating things that aren’t true. But one variable I thought of was when my chickens became mature enough to lay. It was in winter. I don’t use supplements of give them medicine. If they can’t hack I guess we eating chicken. Just a thought.

    I have 10 ISA Brown 2 1/2 years old now. We get 9 or 10 eggs every day, in all seasons. Very occasionally we get 11 or 8. They are L, XL or Jumbo. They didn't slow down one bit last winter and we live in Southern Ontario, cold, and snowy. I don't give any supplements. The girls don't molt other than the odd feather. We feed a balanced feed, scrapes and cooked oatmeal late in the afternoon. I also give them back broken up egg shells, oyster shell and grit. They are free range except in garden growing season. Even on this snowy day in late November, their door is open but they don't like snow and don't venture far. I also don't feed or water in their coop. It stays so clean. They only use it for sleeping and laying. There's a tray covered in chopped straw under their roosts. Everything just slides off into a wheelbarrow. Takes a minute to clean. 🐔 🐔 🐔 are easy if you have the right set up. Thanks to my husband, I do!

    I had a problem with my chickens not laying as much. We fed high protein feed but lacked vitamin D3. I changed feed which included D3 and production has increased. Vitamin D3 is needed to help promote the absorption of Calcium. The protein, Calcium and Vitamin D3 work together to strengthen the health of your eggs. The extra minerals are a bonus.

    Looking forward to this video...I'm only 30 seconds in right now. My hens are pretty good layers in the Winter; 17-19 eggs a day as opposed to 24-26 a day in Spring and Summer (35 hens). I'm in northeast Alabama, so I'm not near as cold a climate as your are in. I do give the girls an additional 3 hours of supplemental light when the days are shorter. Here it is end of October and I’m just now starting to get about five eggs per day. I tried feeding them the soaked beans. I just started giving them some yogurt. I’ve tried all kinds of silly stuff that I never remember having to do with any of the chickens we had when I was a kid. Interesting behavior. What age are your chickens? Those that are just old enough to lay eggs will regardless of the time of year. They usually cycle with the older girls next winter when they don't get enough light.. Calcium in their diet is another reason they stop. If they are eating mostly bugs & grubs etc and not the calcium rich layer feed it can slow down egg production. Going through a molt will slow down egg production and most birds do that in the summer as well. Another reason is stress. Predators, aggressive birds in the flock, too much heat even loud noises can upset them and cause them to stop. They also often lay their eggs outside the coop just because they prefer to or don't want to wait for a box to be empty.
    Do any of these ring any bells?

    • @SunnySlopeHomestead
      @SunnySlopeHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They range from 2 to 1 year old may have a few 3 year olds in there. My chickens lay in boxes and on the floor every once and awhile. I stop giving the calcium due to hard eggs shell and rough eggs. Mine free range with layer feed . Stress is a factor sometimes but usually only a day or two

    Well I just came across this video & wanted to share with you my first year (6 months) experience so far. First I think I have retarded chickens ! Yep, retarded... they started laying in October 2023 & right now I pickup about 12 to 18 eggs everyday ! I have a buff Orpington rooster that starts to crow at 10pm & every 2 hours until day break ! I never raised chickens from chicks before but I’m pretty sure roosters are supposed to crow in the day time ! lol. As far as egg production goes I wasn’t expecting eggs until February/March so I guess my girls didn’t get that memo ! All I feed my birds is starter grower mix & wild bird seed mixed together at a 1 to 1 ratio. Protein is at 20%. I don’t know if that’s good or bad but, I’m not going to change it even after 20 weeks old . Everything I have read & every person I’ve talked to including the hatchery I got them from stated 18-20% protein is what chickens need. I also leave grit & oyster shells in the pen/coop at all times. That’s all I personally know at this point. I’ve lost 6 birds due to another chicken killing them. If I discover the murderer... she’s gonna be dinner that day !
