What grabs me as a newbie in the modular world, is how much the music you make, is exactly what I want to accomplish. Your style and choice of voicing spot on!

Your example patches sound absolutely banging, I got a softpop2 after watching you play with it and absolutely love it, now I'm just longing to get into modular.

Bastl is really killing it lately packing so much *usable* functionality into their modules; GASing for a pizza, ikarie and aikido as a base for a rack...

Totally agree. They always make top stuff. Pizza, Ikarie and Aikido are a perfect trio to build a rack around

really appreciated this video. Your patches are complex enough that it took some rewatching.
I'm new to modular (though have decades of experience in synthesis and sound design, etc) and assembling a modest rack. I'm trying to decide on a quad VCA, had been thinking about the Intellijel or doepfer a135-2 or perhaps XAOS Tallin (overdrive feature attracts) or something. But the Aikido looks like it would fit the bill nicely, with all its versatility. It seems to offer basically all the functions those alternatives have, but more? does it give the option of exponential/linear/log slopes?
Main question: Are there other VCAs you'd recommend considering?
[btw what's in my rack so far is a 0-coast, a disting v4, 4ms Spectral Multiband Resonator and their clock divider (which i reckon i'll swap out for Pams or Bitumi or something more versatile), uBursts (clouds clone), Plaits, controlled by an Arturia BSP. I'm trying to not spend a ton and to be mindful of HP]
    thanks

Hi thanks for watching and for the detailed question. The Aikido has linear only response to CV. You can send it a shaped envelope though to replicate the same effect.
If you are looking for a straightforward VCA with shape control of the curves then I'd recommend a Mutable Veils clone (e.g. from After Later Audio) or an After Later QARV (if you have the hp free for it). The Veils clones let you adjust the response curve, and the QARV does that and also has built in envelope and LFO generators.
However what they lack (though you can patch around it with more modules) is the sidechain envelope, the mute buttons and the spectral envelope output. This is a great feature on Aikido and makes it perfect for mixing drums into audio so you can get that 'pumping' sound.
It really comes down to your use case.

This looks awesome! Can it still be used as a regular quad VCA? I'm just not sure how all the normalled channels interact, and does the mixed output always output a mix of everything?
I've been considering the Doepfer A-135-2 quad VCA, but I really like the built in sidechain capabilities of the Aikido.

Never mind, I found what I was looking for in the manual! This thing looks perfect. Thanks for the video!

Yes, absolutely. It’s a regular VCA in addition to the nice extra features
