I love your builds and had to subscribe after watching. Thanks for the vids/builds. Keep them coming! I love that you make them look nice and don't use glue to hold random obviously modified parts together. Going to have to start calling you MacGiver!
Scoop268 Thanks Scoop! That's exactly what I'm going for. I try to make these builds 1.cheap 2.function correctly 3. look professional. Thank you for subscribing!
Just wanted to say thanks. I followed your video and built one of these tonight. Also, here is a quick tip that may help others. You can skip the need for the CPVC cap and just use the silver top to the mini tripod that has the keychain clip. Just remove the clip and drill out the center stud. Drill from the inside of the cap and it will work fine. It fits perfectly into the grip handle.
***** Thanks Luis. I've got something around 150 videos right now. A lot of them are GoPro Gear builds. Ideally I like to do two videos a week but lately I've been incredibly busy and haven't been able to do many. I'm glad you like them though. I'll keep making them.
Made my own, using your design. Love the end product! I have a power bank in one grip and the other is complete, just waiting on my mini tripod to arrive from China. I may be waiting awhile, but the power grip will keep me happy for some time to come. The power bank and the tripod were the most expensive items. Each grip will cost about $22 each. Well worth it! Thanks for the video!
Thanks Luke! Glad you found it useful! If you haven't yet, check out the cell phone holder that attaches to it for use as a view finder: GoPro Tripod Grip Modification - Mount Your Phone as a Viewfinder .
i might just have to check that out!! your videos are so useful, you've earned yourself another subscriber! :) i hope to see some more useful tips from you!!
You actually don't really NEED the cpvc cap. Just use the silver cap that came on the tripod. The post on the top screws off and works as a pilot hole when you drill out the center for your 1/4 20 bolt, and the cap is the exact size as the tripod. Just a tip for anyone else that is thinking about making one of these.
Great build buddy! Thanks so much for sharing all your great ideas. I noticed during your vid on the battery grip build you had a grip set up with a tripod mount and smartphone mount as a display behind the gopro. Do you have a vid for this? Thanks again!
Little tip for you guys. You don't need the cpvc cap, just take the cap that comes with the tripod that has the key ring on it and cut the nub off the top amd drill a hole in it to mount your gopro adapter to, it works much better this way.
Aaron Hemberger That's true Aaron. Several people have mentioned that and it's been noted in the parts list in the description. I appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching.
+God's Country No problem. This was so useful... really changed how I thought about grips/mounts etc that I need for my gopro and camera. With the gopro tripod mount - I think you said it's gopro branded? I'm trying to work out where I can save money and where it's worth spending more in terms of the gopro mounts etc.
+samw15 The tripod is kind of a generic piece that sometimes gets branded by different companies but it's the same part. They can be hard to find but I sell them on my site www.buygoproparts.com/ if you have trouble locating one.
Towards the end, when I was building them, the tripod piece got hard to find. Now there are commercial products that pretty much do the same thing, very inexpensively. Thanks for the comment!
I did some quick searching and found a few. Amazon: www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Pocket-Tripod-Holder-Included/dp/B005FRI13Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419264720&sr=8-1&keywords=mini+pocket+tripod . Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Pocket-Tripod-Mount-Stand-Screw-Clip-Clamp-For-Mobile-Phone-Camera-Key-Ring-/201139418785?pt=US_Mounts_Holders&var=&hash=item2ed4d7f6a1 . Those are the cheapest I could find in a short search. The ebay seller is from Hong Kong. I'm not sure where you are located. I hope that helps!
Thanks Chris! I am not aware of any other tripod that will fit inside a grip. I have not looked for a while but they were getting hard to find. They were marketed under many different names and also sold on ebay. If you can't find one, I may have a few new ones left that I could sell you.
Just FYI: As of today the tripod is available through eBay listed as "RED Portable Mini Pocket Tripod Mount 1/4 Screw For Camera + Cellphone Clamp" for $15 USD.
Thanks Ed! The tripod and camera combo is pretty darn stable. I'm sure there is a strong enough wind to knock it over but I'm not sure how strong that wind would need to be. This tripod is less stable if you attach you phone as a viewfinder like this: th-cam.com/video/UWQZMCJAxv8/w-d-xo.html .
Are the tripod legs you have on your site, only silver? In this video, it looks like it's black. Also, if I purchased parts on your site to make a Grip with battery and tripod legs, any chance you can drill that CPVC cap for me? Unfortunately, I don't own a drill, nor my husband. I love putting things together, thus, I would like to "build" it myself but of course, with your parts. It would be awesome to build the grip and be able to interchange the battery & tripod legs. Would be even cooler if it was an all in one. Lol.
takeme2urmac For you..... I will drill the caps! It's not something I normally do but I will. Just make a note on the order when you check out and also post a reply to this comment to remind me. Yes the tripods that I sell are only silver. The black one was in the first tripod grip that I ever built and the tripod came from a different supplier. That supplier no longer carries them and black is tough to get. Luckily it's mostly inside the grip. You can build a grip and interchange the battery and the tripod. It just takes an allen wrench to loosen and tighten the grip screw.
Thanks M Bert! I'm glad you like it. You don't need that specific brand and model of grip. If you can find a cheaper locking grip with locking rings on both sides, go for it. You might be able to use the removable tripod head that comes with the tripod and slip a cheaper, non-locking rubber or foam grip over the body of the tripod. The problem is that I don't know if it will fit tightly around the tripod. You really don't need the grip for the tripod to be functional. Just buy the tripod and use the head with the gopro tripod adapter. That will be functional. The grip just makes it look better, it fills your hand better, and is non-slip. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more help.
Hi awesome gopro diy's. I just ordered the stuff to make this, cost me about 30 bucks for eveything hear in canada off amazon. The tripod was killer $20, very hard to find.
Normally if i am going in the water with my diy gopole i just put a pool noodle around it. I am just wondering, do you think a floaty backdoor would be able to carry the weight of everything?
JairNijkamp Thanks Jair! I think you'll like it. Yes the tripods have become hard to find..... I just got done doing a float test. I used the 3+/4 case, floaty back door, tripod grip and I also had my little aluminum plate attached that can hold a phone. It seemed to float in the beginning but as I worked all of the air out from inside the grip, it did not float. Sorry for the bad news. This was really a worst case scenario. If you used a GoPro 3 case (bigger, more air inside), and didn't have the small aluminum plate attached, it MIGHT float but probably just barely. I wouldn't chance it. Also, if you happen to need another GoPro pole, check out my DIY clear floating gopro pole build. Take care.
Thanks for replying, much appreciated. I use the 3+silver. i was thinking depending on how much room is left inside the grip i may try to seal it off with a bit of spray foam inside there as i dont see my self taking it apart and it might help its floatation. otherwise i thought of another idea that can be used with both handles. if you had either a straight bracket or boomerang shaped metal bracket, the handles could be attached to it to make a tray for snorkeling or something like that. (i prefer metal, just looks more professional build) i will be making the clear go pole at some point maybe in the summer.
Sune Larsen Hi Sune. You could try that but I don't think the grip lock ring will be able to get a good enough grip on the cap to make it work. If you can't find a CPVC cap, you could try something like a small piece of wooden dowel. Let me know if you have any other questions!
+Tomer Feld Hi Tomer. Thanks for the comment. The place that I bought my original tripod no longer sells them but I sell them here: www.buygoproparts.com/
Hey Grant! Yes, apparently finding CPVC is difficult in some countries. I would suggest a short section of 7/8" (22.2mm) wooden dowel rod. Cut a short piece and drill the hole through it.
+James Morales Hey James. I've done a couple light videos. The easy way: th-cam.com/video/NNwxU7Rmp3o/w-d-xo.html and a light that runs off of the gopro itself but is much more difficult to build: th-cam.com/video/54kc8s8jgjI/w-d-xo.html . In all honesty, I don't use a light with my GoPro very often. Thanks for the comment!
Hunter Kleinz Hi Hunter. The bolt you will need is a 1/4-20 x 1/2" long. You will also need a nut that fits that bolt to use as a spacer because that bolt will be to long
Sorry for the continuous comments but do you think there is a way to add a tripod or legs to a regular bike grip (has only one end open). I already have a handle to attach the GoPro and am now trying to make it stand as well.
Hi M Bert. Honestly, this video was the best way that I could figure out to combine a grip and a tripod and have everything look good and function correctly. If you aren't able to buy the lock on grips right now, you might want to consider saving up for them (or maybe check a bike shop for a used set?). Other than that, the tripod that is featured in the video is the only one that I found that would do what I wanted, so that part is critical. After you buy it, you might be able to slip a "regular" (foam or rubber) bike grip over it. I do not know for sure if they grip will be tight enough around the tripod body to keep the two parts together. If one end of your grips are closed, you should be able to cut them open. If you aren't concerned with having the internal tripod, you could cut a circle/square out of wood for a stable base and then screw a PVC cap to that board. Use a piece of PVC pipe the correct diameter that a bike grip will slip onto. On the other end, use another PVC cap, drill a hole through it and attach a gopro tripod adapter. That would get you a GoPro grip that will stand on it's own for super cheap.
Vincent barone Hi Vincent! Since I made this video the tripods have gotten somewhat hard to find. The place that I bought mine from doesn't carry them anymore. If things go as planned, I hope to start selling them sometime soon. Until then, there are usually some on ebay. Thanks for the comment!
God's Country Thank you so much! I found about 3 on amazon, and all were sold out. I have ordered all of the other pieces for this build, now I just have to find the pocket tripod. If you do decide to sell the tripods, please alert me. Great videos by the way!
Vincent barone I bought mine from eBay. It is listed as "RED Portable Mini Pocket Tripod Mount 1/4 Screw For Camera + Cellphone Clamp" for $15 USD. It took several weeks to ship from China to TN, but was well worth it. Happy hunting!
+Lukas. Thanks! If you're in the USA, CPVC caps are pretty easy to find. If not, you could probably use a small piece of wooden dowel rod with a hole drilled in the middle.
Yes the 3-Way. I just happen to put this video up shortly before they released it. I'm sure they have had it in the works for a long while though. Pretty interesting product. I'd love to try it but I wish it was a little cheaper... I feel like $70 is kind of expensive.
***** Hey ZD! Thanks for the message! I'll look into possibly building a tray. If I can make something that looks good, isn't terribly hard to build, and not to expensive, I'll post a how-to. Thanks you for the suggestion.
Thanks for sharing this. Its a beauty! All it needs now is packaging and displayed in the stores. It looks that good. Well done mate.
Mazlan Inferumseraphim Hahaha! Thanks! I'm glad you like it. I've ended up using it quite a bit.
I would like to thank you for sharing this video, I made the grip myself and I can say, this is an awesome grip, very easy and cheap.
Jun Noriega Thanks Jun! I'm glad it's working so well for you!
that is the neatest thing ive ever seen! so simple; so effective

TomieT1965 Thanks Tomie! I actually use this setup quite a bit. I think you'll like it.
Nice job I'm building one for me just right now. The best handle tripod mount every.

Another great idea, cheers, and funny enough I've got the bits to make it, excellent.
Haha! That's a great coincidence! Thanks again!
Awesome project dude!
Thanks Charlie! I'm excited about it too.
Thanks for the video and the links, just bought the parts.
Thanks Taylor! Glad you liked it.

I have been using a wooden table leg for a hand mount for awhile. I am going to build this.
Thanks! I hope you like it.
This is an amazing idea! Would it be easy to add a wrist strap to this design?
Lawro Woods I will give that some thought. As of right now I don't have a wrist strap solution.
Just purchased all from the site to build this.
you are just awesome. thanks.
+t vandang Thanks T!!!
Thank you very much I loved your videos.

thats a good setup for a gopro mount.
Thanks Blake!
Wow, looks like this DIY got so popular, that tripod is nowhere to be found! I really wanted to give this a try too, looks really handly.
Lincoln Mennuti Really? I haven't searched for it in a while. Let me look around and see if I can find any for sale anywhere. Thanks for the comment!
I did some quick searching and found a few. Amazon: www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Pocket-Tripod-Holder-Included/dp/B005FRI13Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419264720&sr=8-1&keywords=mini+pocket+tripod .

Those are the cheapest I could find in a short search. The ebay seller is from Hong Kong. I'm not sure where you are located. I hope that helps!
God's Country Thanks for taking the time to look it up. I just might grab that Polaroid version.
wow great video and i will find out how to buy Mini Pocket Tripod, is there any other type that will fit on the grip?
Thanks Chris! I am not aware of any other tripod that will fit inside a grip. I have not looked for a while but they were getting hard to find. They were marketed under many different names and also sold on ebay. If you can't find one, I may have a few new ones left that I could sell you.
Excellent Video.. Just saved me from buying the GoPole BASE, which looks awesome, but i have just seen some nasty reviews!
Thank You
GoodasGuilty Thanks GAG! I don't have any experience with the GoPole BASE but that's interesting that it's getting bad reviews.
Wow this is Genius!
Alex Krause Thanks Alex! I'm glad you like it!
Just FYI: As of today the tripod is available through eBay listed as "RED Portable Mini Pocket Tripod Mount 1/4 Screw For Camera + Cellphone Clamp" for $15 USD.
Hi. That's a great rig. How stable is the tripod in the wind? Would it be prone to tipping over?
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm enjoying all your builds.
Are the tripod legs you have on your site, only silver? In this video, it looks like it's black. Great! Thank you. :) I'll be sure to leave a note with my order.
Thanks
Well I'm broke so I cannot get those bike grips...any other suggestions on what to use? Also this is genius!!
Thank you I will hopefully get to make it soon.
You sell the parts ?
i found another tripod on called First2savvv ZP-100A16. It looks identical to this one. Wish me luck, i'm about to buy it.
***** Thanks Smoke. Yes I would bet money that it will work. It appears to be the same as the one that I sell.

Would it be possible to drill a hole in the bike grip cap instead of buying the cpvc cap?
Sune Larsen Hi Sune. You could try that but I don't think the grip lock ring will be able to get a good enough grip on the cap to make it work. If you can't find a CPVC cap, you could try something like a small piece of wooden dowel. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Can you put a link from where did you get the tripod?
+Tomer Feld Hi Tomer. Thanks for the comment. The place that I bought my original tripod no longer sells them but I sell them here: www.buygoproparts.com/
I really struggling to find the slip caps in the UK, do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
Hey Grant! Yes, apparently finding CPVC is difficult in some countries. I would suggest a short section of 7/8" (22.2mm) wooden dowel rod. Cut a short piece and drill the hole through it.
How about a light for Gopro ? What do you use ?

could I buy this from you???
what size is the bolt that you used on the tripod mount piece
Hunter Kleinz Hi Hunter. The bolt you will need is a 1/4-20 x 1/2" long. You will also need a nut that fits that bolt to use as a spacer because that bolt will be to long
Sorry for the continuous comments but do you think there is a way to add a tripod or legs to a regular bike grip (has only one end open). I already have a handle to attach the GoPro and am now trying to make it stand as well.

That would get you a GoPro grip that will stand on it's own for super cheap.
I'll see and thank you once again.
Sorry about that then i guess i should have read them all. Thanks for sharing
Do you have a link of where you got the pocket tripod from?
Vincent barone Hi Vincent! Since I made this video the tripods have gotten somewhat hard to find. The place that I bought mine from doesn't carry them anymore. If things go as planned, I hope to start selling them sometime soon. Until then, there are usually some on ebay. Thanks for the comment!

Vincent barone dude, your find restored my faith in China,..
I'll burn some animals for your good fortune
hi
do you ship the parts to the UK.
No I'm sorry I only ship parts inside the USA.
Does a Soda cap also work instead of the cpvc cap?
+Lukas. Hi Luka. No I think the soda cap is to large of a diameter to fit in the grip.
Hmm okey...Thanks anyway.. Great video :)
+Lukas. Thanks! If you're in the USA, CPVC caps are pretty easy to find. If not, you could probably use a small piece of wooden dowel rod with a hole drilled in the middle.
Okey yeah im not from the USA im from switzerland and can`t find any CPVC cpas but thanks for the tip with the wood cap :)
dopeeeeeeeee
Thanksssss Kelvin!
Awesome! :)
Pok Nacario Thanks Pok!
dopeeee
Thankssssss! :-)
Genius.
RedMistr1 Thanks!
Gopro made a Mount like this now.
Yes the 3-Way. I just happen to put this video up shortly before they released it. I'm sure they have had it in the works for a long while though. Pretty interesting product. I'd love to try it but I wish it was a little cheaper... I feel like $70 is kind of expensive.
