I read if I remember correctly, where David and the band were rehearsing the song in the studio and David asked Romany to come into the studio and do the vocals as she was on her way out of town. She had a few minutes and did maybe two takes and left. The talent DNA doesn't fall far from the tree.
I love how David takes a backseat to Romany on this. Early on, he is looking at her through the window and he sort of fades away. And then his guitar solo, usually it’s front and center, but the production of it isn’t as in your face as his solos usually are. I think it’s just right. It’s a cover song that is superior to the original, his tastes are always right on to choose this for her. It sounds like someone youthful having their hearts broken, and he knew it wasn’t right for him to sing it. It somehow captures the experience of being a teenager that a nearly 80 year old can’t quite sing about, if that makes sense.
This song is a cover of The Montgolfier Brothers (Composers: Roger Quigley / Mark Tranmer 2002). This in no way diminishes David Gilmour's genius and Romani's wonderful performance, which I adore. It's just for the record.
It's a cover from someone else's song in the 90's that David likes. He explains here: th-cam.com/video/hCQcKUtg9kc/w-d-xo.html ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) ) I'm jealous you got to see the concert.... You should check out the behind the scenes video David has on his site, he delves more deeply into how Romany came to sing lead here. (she did the version you see in essentially one take having never heard the song before) th-cam.com/video/EckHimWp9NI/w-d-xo.html ( David Gilmour - The Making of Luck and Strange ) (between two points is at time 8:50) And if you haven't seen it, this is a lovely photo album of Romany growing up, set to one of David's tunes and she sure does look like the young David: th-cam.com/video/T_gQ_D5yhAE/w-d-xo.html ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli ) And finally, Romany was doing a few songs at a local pub's open mic night and in came Dad, and they did an impromptu duet of Wish You Were Here: th-cam.com/video/-jYMraZjPHE/w-d-xo.html ( VR 360 - Romany & David Gilmour - Wish You Were Here - Open Mic at the Neptune Inn - Part 4 of 4 ) Not at all polished, or even rehearsed, but wonderful to see their interaction in this setting.
Her mother, Polly Sampson (also David’s wife) wrote this as well as many of Gilmour and Floyd’s newer songs. Agree this is too short. But I do enjoy the addition of Romany on vocals and harp on this album. Thanks Sad! Happy New Year!
@ interesting. In an interview with Gilmour he spoke about his wife writing this song. maybe I’m confusing it with another or she helped with the arrangement or something. Thanks!
@@AmberPearcy perhaps a missunderstanding? I could imagine that is was meant that she transformed the original to the new version. maybe. I know the original song and it is great too.
Nah. This isn't how I want to remember Gilmour. Reminds me of Mike Tyson against Jake Paul. Both old has beens just out for a big fat cheque and living on past glories. In Gilmour's case, it's been about 3 decades since he's done anything meaningful. As for his daughter, if only she had one tenth the ability and talent of his 70's prodigy, Kate Bush. She plays 4 notes on the harp, lol. Her voice is soulless. Guess she'll always scrape a living milking his surname. I think if she didn't have it, your comments would be different! A bit of trivia. Over here we had a period drama called Downton Abbey(set in Yorkshire, lol). Her and one of her siblings was in one of the series, in about 2013. Looks like she's a failed actor as well as a mediocre musician. I'm all for helping your kids but this isn't for me. I will remember the icon from late 60's, 70's and early 80's

@@jim1125-cv6yg I was a huge fan of Gilmour for many years and saw him lots of time in his prime. I think you're mistaking "fan" with "blinkered follower".

Love it!
Love this too! Delicately woven and sung, David's timeless tone on the solo. Hell, I'd be proud too.

this is a cover, the montgolfier brothers did original 2014 i think
I know she can play guitar but can she play like her father? If so, fans can enjoy another 60 years of awesome music. It is off the new album.👍

Why are you always so sexist and nasty?
Truly unnecessary comment
not truly a fan of Gilmour.
