This would technically be called a long recoil action/system the barrel travels all the way back with the bolt there’s also a well known 50 that used the same action the it’s like GY6 lynx I always get the first part wrong
There’s also a short recoil action/system where the barrel only travels partially back and example being the Barrett m82 line I believe the johnson rifle is short recoil as well
They used the force of the recoil to work the action rather than a gas system
A lot of pistols like 1911 and glocks used a version of short recoil combined with a hinged barrel

The Browning Auto-5 is a semi-automatic shotgun that was designed by John Moses Browning and first manufactured by the Browning Arms Company in 1902. It was one of the first successful semi-automatic shotguns to be produced and remained in production until 1998.
The Auto-5 has a distinctive humpback receiver design and was available in a variety of gauges, including 12, 16, 20, 28, and .410. It was also produced in a variety of models, including the Standard, Magnum, and Light Twelve.
One of the unique features of the Auto-5 is its recoil-operated action, which uses the energy of the fired shell to cycle the action and load a new round. This design made the Auto-5 popular among hunters and shooters, as it reduced felt recoil and allowed for faster follow-up shots.
In addition to its use as a hunting shotgun, the Auto-5 also saw military service in World War I and World War II, and was used by various law enforcement agencies.
While the Browning Arms Company no longer produces the Auto-5, it remains a popular and collectible shotgun among hunters and shooting enthusiasts.

It’s hard tbh this isn’t the best shotgun for speed loading (I’m holding mine rn doing some “research” thinking about cutting my barrel down) but you need to hold the bolt release to open the loading gate, and the loading gate likes to eat your fingers while loading if you’re not using a glove.( you can buy loading gates that don’t need the button to be held down and I have no doubt better worked ones are out there that wouldn’t cut your fingers but if you find one cheep in a pawn shop chances are it’ll need a little work if you plan on working a shot timer well at least

Or remove it entirely for black powder loads. Most people don't know about that ring being reversible. Which is why Auto 5s gained a reputation for having really harsh recoil. Because a lot of people just leave it in the low brass setting (which does mean it'll run everything more reliably) but it makes high-brass/hot-loads more punishing on both the shooter and the gun.

That first shot that failed to completely eject was the result of a soft hold. The reciprocating barrel was moving back and you can clearly see the whole gun push back without enough resistance to allow the full cycle.

My Dads A5 lightweight loved Winchester or Fiochocci high wall rounds, anything else used to jam. DADS was 5 rounds with the tube sticking out of the forend and had an adjustable choke on the barrel. We also had a spare skeet and rifled barrel. Unfortunately I never had a chance to inherit the A5, the laws changed in 1996(Australia).

  • @yourbiologicalstep-dad4642

As i remember there is a brass ring in this gun that you can flip around for bird shot vs hunting loads. Thats probably why the shells are hanging up on ejection. Mine was doing the same thing until i learned about the ring. Never had any issues after that with jamming.

This was a game changing design, but fortunately designs have since changed. What I mean is, this is a long-recoil action: the barrel recoils the entire length of the stroke before unlocking, extraction and feeding. This increases felt recoil substantially. Short recoil and gas powered semiautomatics are more reliable and they kick less.

My favorite shotgun of all time. The original Shoulder Howitzer, with the recoil operating system. The longer reciever also gives a longer sight radius. People who have trouble with them don't understand that they are adjustable to your load. Learn the gun, and you'll never have a malfunction. It is the most complete semi-auto ever made still to this day, although there are a couple sweet little Ithicas that will give it a run for the money.
Nothing wrong with all the others, though. I love a good older Remington 870, or a Mossberg 500.
