I've got an ms290, ms361, McCullough PM 610, a few newer poulans, an echo cs 400 and a little old 40cc Homelite super ez automatic. Hands down the old homelite is my pick of the bunch. It's the only saw I have that makes me smile every time I use it. It's 40 years old and even on a bad day it never takes more than a couple pulls before it roars to life. You can tell the instant you pick it up that the old engineers in homelites saw department weren't the type to stop at "good enough". They clearly took a great deal of pride in their work.
@@pioneerman8467 biggest I've ever used on the old homelite is a 16". I'm sure it could get by on an 18" but honestly I think it'd be a bit much for it to handle comfortably. If I need an 18" bar I go with the cs 400 without question.
I still have my Dad's XL-12. Same paint job. Missing outside plate on exhaust. I may have to use your idea. Sounds great and looks good to. They don't make them like that anymore.

Ok. This video has me thinking. If you had a junk double shotgun barrel you really could do a vertical down draft shotgun muffler. After you got all your welds ground and polished the whole muffler could be cold blued. You could sleeve the barrel internally to get whatever constriction you needed to tune the exhaust port pressure. And you could use a single barrel with an extended screw in turkey choke for an interesting look too. I hope this don't cause me to stay up late thinking too much.....

i have a homelite exactly like this one. it was my grandfathers since the mid 60's.. amazing machine.. converted it to solid state, starts every time in any condition. only problem is the design of the gas tank.. it almost perpetually leaks gas.. any idea for a fix?

That's a double barrel 12 ga muffler. Muffler may not be the proper word.. I think I might have been inclined to go more horizontal or downward and shorten it a bit... Oh never mind. This wasn't about function. It was all about style.😁
what do you call those teeth that grip on to a log that are on the chain bar next to it? I have this same saw starts up great,runs great!!! but I need the teeth on it? what are those called? thanks

''felling dogs'', so thanks a lot!!! you answered my question!!!
XL-12s did not have mufflers in any sense of the word, and yours still doesn't. Better you'd build an expansion-chamber, but to get real benefit of that you'd have to change port-timing. Overkill for a low-revver of that era, but could be fun.

Bumper spikes or Felling spikes. You can sharpen them as needed.
Shane Dahlke They're known here on the west coast as Dogs. lol Large felling dogs or Small felling dogs.

I did, cut a plate of metal to fit and welded the two pipes to it.
