I have learned to laugh and then say sorry Lord I wondered off again. I think he just laughs and celebrates the fact that I have come back. Be kind to yourself. He knows our frailties.
"Just show up" when praying to God. "It is much better to pray about the wrong thing together with God than to worry about the right thing quite apart from God."
When distracted I say this little prayer, “God take my thoughts and straighten their paths in me.” I read this someplace and it helps me comeback to my prayer hour or service.
Oh dear, I struggle so much with my mind wandering. I am a hyper person anyway and to try to settle myself and focus on God for any length of time is difficult. I have stopped beating myself up over it though. One thing that has helped me tremendously is to keep my prayers short, not to pray intensely at bedtime, but to get up very early in the morning before the day begins. I also have found that writing down my prayers in my journal helps me to stay focused and I can then even go back and read them over again. Its like writing a letter to God instead of talking but for me that works. These " Become New" videos have been such a blessing to me. I always love John's books and am going through some hard times right now so these little videos have been a Godsend. Thank you!
I pray for all the people I know and listing them off with names and then without names, and all of our brothers and sisters in all of God’s creation and all creatures great and small !! Of course beginning with thank you God, Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit . Thank you John, and for Become New , and all of you dear people. I am soooo grateful !! Bless you one and all !! 🙏🏼❤️
Just show up... wow. In my cancer survivor group earlier this week, we shared the wisdom in a children's book titled, "What is my Song?" by Dennis Linn. Then, we talked about what is the song we hear as we go through life. One of our group members said he didn't really have a song, but he felt guided by the refrain... "Just show up. " Coinkydink? I think not. By the way... if you have children or grandchildren, you would both enjoy sharing, "What is my Song?"
Thank you, John. This was so helpful. I had messaged Become New a 2nd time to "clarify" my prayer. 😊 I wasn't sure it was the "right" prayer. 😊 I get it now. Thy will be done. I just need to bring my heart before the Lord. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Almost always my mind wanders while praying but almost always the Holy Spirit brings me back to the matter in hand. I am useless at having a ‘prayer time’ and mostly just speak to Him as the thought comes to mind. After all He is always listening
Especially for bedtime praying, I usually start out with the prayer request, “When I have prayed for what You know best, then let me go to sleep in your arms.” I pretty much pray along the way throughout my day. Easier for me to stay focused that way!
Staying focused in prayer has been a challenge for me too, lately I have found that my prayer beads help me, simple prayers help me to center and be still.
One way I focus my mind back to God is sometimes praying holding onto my knees. Its not uncomfortable(getting on my knees is) but it helps keep me more focused on the prayertime by the unusual posture. Thank you John & team for helping us "Make today a Golden Rule day" I agree with 'just show up'. Everyday, all day with Jesus. The Holy Spirit is my bff.
Thank you John. This was truly so impactful. You had me at "Hello". I find my mind wandering (just as you described) and at the same time, I keep "showing up".
What a wonderful week this has been. I shared the first prayer devo with a few friends and some let me know how encouraged they were and that they reached out to the prayer team. And that truly blessed me! Along with John and others, I will continue to stand before my Father with my request A.S.K. knowing He’s at work in me and the in request. Hope others will share how they have seen Him in their prayers. Thanks again one and all.
Thank you for today❤ I've been exactly there many times lately. 'Distractable' is my name😢 Interestingly, I just read a devotion with this in it: John Ortberg once asked Dallas Willard for advice on how to grow spiritually. The advice Willard gave surprised him, because instead of laying out a complex set of instructions for what John should do, he simply said this: Eliminate all hurry from your life. If only😅 Mmm, Ortberg? I've heard of him😂😂
When my mind wanders, I just recognize that it has wandered and think about 2 Cor 3:18… “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” Do I want to ruminate in my tiny thoughts in front of the King of the universe or do I want to be transformed by gazing at Him? I consider gazing at Him to be an excellent form of prayer.
Thank you John for simplifying this down and taking away guild and making my prayer time much more real and accessible. So helpful ChrisW from Down Under.
Soo good… Thank you John. “Just show up” .. I am currently caring for my agin mum… & that illustration is so helpful.. our conversations are mostly one way & very boring… but… I do “Just show up” Thank you
Picture This... Make a phone call to God, start your prayer... put him on hold as needed, then just continue...in the evening, finish the call, to God... in Jesus name, goodnight.
I pray, “search me oh God and know my heart, test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me down the path of everlasting life.” Psalm 139:23-24. This helps me to redirect my thoughts.
Praying out loud helps me to focus and but let my mind wander. Praying scripture and reminding myself of God’s truth and promises that relate to what I’m praying about also helps.

Conversation with God throughout your day - are prayers. Yes he is always listening Bucky
I commit: I will continue to lift this deeply held concern up to God in prayer each day until it is resolved or I die!
Pray without ceasing Thessalonians 5:17. Blessings Bucky

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS:
What do you do when your mind wanders in prayer? We want to know!
