I love these old cabins and barns. A couple years back I took a hike back to the Walker sisters cabin. The feeling that came over me while standing on the front porch of that cabin is something I can’t explain. Just standing there where people once lived, died, worked the land, etc. I’ll never forget it. I wish they would have preserved more of the old cabins in the mountains and in cades cove.
They are not building any more of the big wooden barns. What you see is the last ones. They are still replicating log homes but not with the cobblestone dirt floors like a lot of them had back then. Thanks, Donnie.
The Park made a huge mistake tearing down the old houses. They only saved and restored one which you noted in this video. Others should have been saved and restored like the Cable House.
Enjoyed this so much, cousin Donnie! Cades Cove is my wife's and my favorite place to visit. Between a bout with Covid and amother with cellulitis in my right leg, we never got a chance to visit last year, but we're hoping to ger back up there this spring or fall. I went through the Cove many times before I got into genealogy, having no idea of how many of my kinfolk lived and died there, but you can bet that learning more about that really enhanced my trips thereafter. Kermit Caughron is my 17th cousin, once removed, and Carter Shields is my 16th cousin, once removed, just to name a couple. You and I are really attached to the cove, dear cousin! I wish you and yours, and all watching, Shabbat Shalom and blessings, cousin Donnie. G-d bless each and all, and please continue to pray Psalm 122:6.
Good morning Donnie, having built with my sweat and blood and lived in seven log homes which the past such as these is what influenced the wife and I to build our log homes. Now at 71 my building days are over but my log homes will be around long after my wife (her sweat and blood included) and I are long gone. Thanks for showing these structures maybe in a hundred years or so someone like you will come along and include mine. My last log home build since this was when the wife came down with cancer is at the LBL and can be seen from I-24 near the WK parkway. Oh and I have to thank God she survived now 13yrs. Have a great day my friend 🙏
How amazing! I can just smell the fresh cut lumber when you walk in to these homes when they were new. All so beautiful! Imagine all the holiday get togethers, Sunday dinners, warm fires to keep warm in the winter and for cooking! 😊 thank you for the video. Stay warm, and safe! Take care ! Have a great weekend!
Visited here many times. Beautiful and peaceful. One time we were there we saw a mama bear with cubs picking and eating cherries on wild cherry tree. Also saw white skunks. Best time to go late afternoon to really see animals out. Has become too crowded at times but if you can catch it when there’s not so many tourists it’s a real pleasure
I love seeing these old buildings. I am so happy the park had the foresight to document and photograph all of them. And to save and preserve the ones they did. Thank your sharing.
Love seeing all the before and after pictures . And the ones we wouldn't have seen without this video. Thank you. I love the history and learning about all those who came before. Keeps them from being forgotten.
Thank you Donnie for the video of one of the most beautiful places in the country , Cades Cove, is America the Beautiful . The view is spectacular there. We have been there many times and we love it there. I love the history, the people, the places and everything about it. There were great sacrifices so we can enjoy this as part of the Great Smoky Mountains today.
Donnie my friend, thank you for another amazing video. I paused several times to just look at these wonderful structures, and imagine the people , pets and lives lived in these places. Imagining the quiet evenings and peaceful days and the family and friend get togethers. Even though life was hard and simple, I like to think of the natural beauty of these structures and the surrounding areas and also of the spirit and passion and culture of the people and families who lived there. Well done and what a great way to start my day, seeing your historical video. God bless you and your family, and all who are in this community here.
How precious, Thank you Donnie for preserving these wonderful “digital footprints of time”. As they say, “time flies but leaves its shadows behind”. Although “time is a thief” these old houses still wear their history proudly. Their stories linger in our hearts even though the walls that once cradled laughter, love, and tears no longer stand. Still in decay their beauty and weathered grace is profound. Their silence speaks of the essence of life and the power of dreams. God Bless our mountain folk who thrive where the wild spirit still speaks, and the world rushes on by. ❤️
Some of my family has been to Cades Cove but I never have. So beautiful! The park service has done a wonderful job of restoring these homes! I look forward to seeing them in person! Thanks for the pictures of the old barns! Having grown up on a farm that had 3 barns, I love them! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for sharing the history of CADES COVE. It is absolutely beautiful, one of my favorite places to visit. It is through your videos that I learned of its history and its people . I appreciate visiting places like this through your videos. Many thanks. God bless.
Beautiful pictures, Donnie!! I love seeing old pictures of houses. I get sad when a very old building gets torn down. It's now lost history. Have a great weekend Donnie!!❤
My mom, dad, two brothers and I used to stay in the Tally Ho Inn in Townsend Tennessee when we went to the Smokies from when I was five till I was about twelve.Later we started staying in Gatlinburg. We loved going into Cades Cove and wandering around for hours then stopping at one of the picnic tables they used to have by the creek with room for just one car to park, We'd dip our feet in the freezing stream while mom fixed sandwiches for us. After we ate we would rinse our plates in the stream. Then we would take a long drive thru the mountains looking for bear and beautiful views till supper time. My momma started crying one time at one of the cemeteries in Cades Cove when she saw about five young children and babies from the same family that had died and were buried by each other.. So many family memories of our visits there. Thanks for showing how it was before the park took it.
Good morning Donnie, Thankyou for taking us-down the road to Cades Cove, showing us how it use to be-mom and I live in North Georgia-everything is changing so fast-we knew it was gonna happen but we sure do cherish the memories of the way it use to be-GOD BLESS you, and your family and Thankyou again for showing us the way it use to be-your friends in North Georgia-Doris(my mom) and me-Tiffany ✝️
That’s very sad Donnie seeing the people and families that have lived and that are now gone forever from their homes… awesome story of them… thanks buddy…
I never get tired of going to and seeing pictures of Cades Cove. I love the stories too. The park service has done a great job of making and keeping Cades Cove beautiful. However I think it’s a little sad that they removed so many structures. Have you come across any documentation as to why they tore down so many structures? Thank you Donnie for the trip down memory lane!
Really enjoy your videos on these historical places and the effort you put into making them. Watching them and letting my mind go back in time is relaxing. Thanks again.
Thanks Donnie. I really really appreciate all you done here. Its awesome. It's just it breaks my heart that so so many were forced out of their homes. Many did not want to go. This world can be so greedy and cold, and do it with a super good excuse....or so it would seem. See ya next time. Thanks for diggin out the originals.
Good Morning to you Donnie Laws, Thank you for sharing your knowledge of cades cove A very interesting story about the historical information about this area.,sad that all the families had to give up their land for modernization, yes its beautiful but at a cost to a lot of families expenses. This was wonderful Mr Donnie! Some of those they destroyed looked good enough to live in for me. Nice touch sharing the before and after pics. Great video as always, thank you!!
We went to Cades Cove when we were in Gatlinburg in October and saw the amazing fall colors. We plan to go back in the spring when everything is in bloom.
Such neat archival photos Donnie...thankfully they have restored some of the structures......but what a beautiful place from a bygone era... Thank you for the video Brother.
Hi Mr Donnie. Thank you for another amazing beautiful video! These pictures of cabins and old barns bring back a lot of good memories. Thank you God bless you always
Hi Donnie, what a beautiful video seeing these the way the buildings were back in the day I do cherish seeing them ! Thank you so much for doing wonderful videos. God bless you and your family. Have🫶🤗 a blessed day
I have learned so much from you. When I moved up here I set in to learn all about things. But what I learn from you, that don't come anywhere else. Thank you!
Donnie, every time I’ve been there, I feel that I was born in the wrong century. My wife and I really loved taking hikes off the trails and seeing the places where people were 200 years ago. We would sit in the old houses and think about the life that went on in these homes. It absolutely is a wonderful place.❤
Such beautiful homes built by their original owners. Those chimneys standing majestically by the timbered log cabin. The skills these people had. Thanks for the video Donnie! A great look back at the wilderness families' homes as they expanded out of the coastal states. The park did do an excellent job with the homes they restored and documenting the ones they tore down. Take care and God bless everyone!!
Another awesome video Donnie we vacation in North Carolina now because of the the people and traffic but we been coming here sense the 80s loved it and miss it every day
We first visited Cades Cove about 20 years ago and always return to admire the animals whenever in the area. Thanks for sharing, Donnie. Sending our best, friend.
Good morning Donnie, Thank you for this great look back in history. I'm sure there are many memories frozen in time back there. I'm so grateful for people like you that help to keep these precious glimpses of history alive. Your friend, Louise
Artiving late today but the video was so good. My daughter and her family visited cades cove a few years back and loved it. I love your old stories , thanks and God bless you and your family.
Howdy Donnie- love those old log cabins. It’s a shame all thoold buildings were destroyed. I guess they thought that was progress. I’ve talked to people who say they are from Cades Cove and wondered if the entire cove was in the park or if the park takes in part of the Cove. Thank you so much for sharing this history even though it kind of saddens me. God’s blessings to y’all
Hello my friend. I understand that completely. It's sad for sure, but you look at it another way I'm glad the park got it. Because they would have destroyed it logging and make it another tourist trap. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless you 🙏
Hi Mr Donnie love all the pictures of time long ago Becky gables house is beautiful but i wish they would have left it more original such pretty places thank you and God bless everyone
I can't say enough good things about this video Donnie. My favorite video and favorite place on earth. I wonder how it would be today if the park service didn't take it over. Thank you for putting this video together.
Thank you for this video! I have camped at Cades Cove several times with family friends and biked that 11-miles loop at daybreak with cars already lining up. I have visited all of the iconic cabins and buildings that were so lovingly preserved. Cades is one of THE most heavenly places on earth. Experiencing the trails and falls and beautifully preserved landscape and having breathtaking close encounters with wild life are unforgettable memories that I will always treasure. Watching this video made me so grateful for times spent in the cove and oddly emotional about its legacy and the resilient people who once called the cove their home. Wonderful presentation! 🤍
I really love hearing about Cades Cove. First time I ever saw any of it, I was about 5 hrs old. My mom had talked my dad into going through the park. The next time I saw the Cove I was about 12 hrs old. It had changed so much mom said she didn't know nothing about the place.
Good morning Mr. Donnie god bless you and again thank you so much for taking the time to share all the history of these places. Good lord willing I'm planning on going back up there in the fall. Its so beautiful and I stand there and try to imagine how things were back then when it was full of life. I love to stay in the little town of Townsend and every where you go is so full of history. Cades cove is just one of the many beautiful places in the smokies its so much to see. I hope you have a wonderful and blessed day ❤
Hi Donnie! Cade's Cove is on my bucket list of places I want to see, mostly because of your videos showing how beautiful it is! I truly hope to see it one day. I wish they could've saved the structures that no longer exist but I think they did a good job on what they could keep. Do they have an old store at all there? All towns would've had one, so it seems like a strange omission if they don't. Thanks for all of the hard work you do to show us these history videos. I always love them! Y'all please take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊
I've been over most of the Southern & across Central US & Cades Cove is one of the most interesting & emotionally stirring places I've ever seen! Got video of 2 little bears right beside the road! Ready to go back, wish I lived closer!
I love these old cabins and barns. A couple years back I took a hike back to the Walker sisters cabin. The feeling that came over me while standing on the front porch of that cabin is something I can’t explain. I can't say enough good things about this video Donnie. My favorite video and favorite place on earth. I wonder how it would be today if the park service didn't take it over. Thank you for putting this video together.
I agree with you, Cades Cove is truly a special place. God bless you 🙏
Thank you for this video! 🤍
I am so glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate you sharing your memories of Cades Cove with me. 🙏
Thanks for your videos. This one reminds me of my youth growing up in the Appalachian foothills in East Koy, NY

I really love hearing about Cades Cove. First time I ever saw any of it, I was about 5 hrs old. My mom had talked my dad into going through the park. The next time I saw the Cove I was about 12 hrs old. It had changed so much mom said she didn't know nothing about the place.
Awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing your memories. God bless you 🙏
I enjoyed seeing these old properties, I haven’t been to Cades Cove in about 40 years. Thank you for bringing back those memories Donnie. 🙂🙏
Thank you friend for sharing ❤️ your very welcome 🙏
Good morning Mr. Donnie god bless you and again thank you so much for taking the time to share all the history of these places. Good lord willing I'm planning on going back up there in the fall. Its so beautiful and I stand there and try to imagine how things were back then when it was full of life. I love to stay in the little town of Townsend and every where you go is so full of history. Cades cove is just one of the many beautiful places in the smokies its so much to see. I hope you have a wonderful and blessed day ❤
God bless you too my friend. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoy the videos, and I hope you get to visit Cades Cove one day. 🙏 God bless you 🙏
I've been over most of the Southern & across Central US & Cades Cove is one of the most interesting & emotionally stirring places I've ever seen! Got video of 2 little bears right beside the road! Ready to go back, wish I lived closer!
God bless you my friend. Thanks so much for sharing. 😊
