Jarrow was also home to Perth Green Boxing Club Eddie- Ran by the Dean's Family. Brian, Frankie, Tony, Billy, Colin, and Paul all boxed for the club winning many National honours and did well in the professional game as promoters. They ran boxing tournaments from the early 1960's until the late 1990's at the Neon Social Club where I boxed many times. Sadly the Neon is no more it was demolished about 5 years ago. Sadly, only Colin and Paul remain from the famous boxing family. Colin lives in London now and I am still in contact with him.

The Albion closed in 2023 unfortunately due to a fire and hasn't re-opened. Was a decent pub that me, my father and godfather went in one time. Shame it's closed now. Was a nice cosy pub. Great video mate and nice to see you doing videos on South Tyneside. A Hebburn local myself. So been through Jarrow many times so nice to see!

Brilliant job! I remember drinking in Jarrow town centre in the eighties. Loads of bars and all rammed at the weekend, especially Sunday. When the metro line extended to South Shields, it killed the scene almost overnight. Great memories!

Great video Eddie. Lived in Jarrow all my life (36 years) and like a lot of people who live there, I’m proud of my Town. The history is so rich, going back hundreds and hundreds of years. Jarrow was one of the very first places the Vikings raided in the 700s, docking their ships by the Don monastery (St Paul’s Church) and sacking the villages nearby. Funny enough, I believe the raid was unsuccessful with a Viking leader being killed by those defending the land (no surprises there given the stubbornness of Jarrow folk!) Saint Bede, unless I’m mistaken, translated the Bible into English. I could be wrong on that one. But he was iconic for Christianity.

At one time jarra was 80%i Irish i beleive.
My grandad told stories of trouble in the local bars between irish catholics and local protestants but it thanfully died off and became a good community.

Used to have family living in Jarrow always been fond of the place,The Jarrow Song & England my England by Alan price are great songs! Been a cynical move by local government in recent years to forge greater links between South Tyneside and Sunderland,as if it were one area,if they close the hospital in Shields it will be disastrous for local people ! I was up in Jarrow a month or so ago to visit Bede World. For anyone interested in early English history this is a must see. I tried to get a pint in The Oak Tree but it had closed …for good so it would seem from your video. It was good to see an English flag flying from the town hall, which I presume is Labour controlled, this is not something that would be seen in London where the the LGBT+ flag seems to fly from so many civic and public buildings.

Good video. Sadly, Jarrow mirrors many Northern towns now. Devastated by poverty. Traditional heartbeat of these places, pubs, cafes, local shops all but extinct now.

Brexit has definitely created economic friction, slowed the process of import and limited the countries options. This has contributed to some price increases but Brexit is not the factor one would jump on as being the reason the people of Jarrow (specifically) as being the reason times are hard. There are other far bigger reasons.

I was trying to explain to people that local elections are more important than the big one.. Each council gets a budget, so the council has more power than than london. Learn about the UK devolution and then you'll realise that the conservative party was not entirely to blame for the mess, look at gateshead for example. Labour and the conservative party are both cheeks of the same @rse. Don't get excited thinking inflation will go down to 2019 numbers. Great video.

Hello Eddie, thanks for another very interesting film about the North East. My (our) grandfather was from Jarrow & fought in the First World War. He won the Military Medal & in recognition of this the people of Jarrow presented him with a gold pocket watch. I understand that all of the citations (records) of medals awarded in the First World War were destroyed in the blitz of WWII. It is only the families that are able to recall these events. My Grandfather unfortunately passed away in 1934 as a consequence of his injuries, when my father was only six-months old, leaving his wife & four young children. I, his grandson, obviously never met him although we are all immensely proud of him. I have never actually visited Jarrow but I would like to sometime soon because of our family history. Your video has prompted me to do this!! Thank you, Neil

Great video, interesting watch. Pity you didn't go into Christ Church (across the road from the Ben Lomond), that was where they left for the march to Jarrow. There's actually a plaque in there with the info on it.

Live own NZ now and not gana lie its a different planet lifestyle wise.
Its mad hearing that a pub os the hub of a community , i think thats a big difference here .. people have loads of hobbies , which bairns are exposed to left right and centre changing the way they enter their teens and older years.
Honestly all the boozers closing isnt a bad thing , just hope they can replace them with more worthwhile establishments.
And thats from an ex sniff/pi$$ head 😂

I can remember the Alan Price song being played as we got to Wembley stadium from Wembley Way for the ‘74 FA Cup final. Even though I was just 14 and not from Jarrow, I felt so proud of the marchers that had trekked all that way to fight their cause. It was uplifting.

Born and bred, lived and still living in Jarra. Left school at 16 and worked at Swan Hunter on the Tyne as a sheetmetalworker. Left the yards in my mid 20's when it went into liquidation and from there became a civil servant. While I was in the yards I always remember one of the older hands in the metal shop laughing and taking the milk out of me from coming from Jarra. When I asked why he was laughing at that he said "Well son you must all be mad in Jarra, your the the only place I know that built a set of statues in your town paying homage to a bunch of men (the vikings) who came over the sea to rape all your women and pillage your town!!
