  • Our own camera guy finally stepped away from the camera to answer our members question on how to get the best arc shot!
    There are many tools to do this from pricey equipment to a simple (yet expensive) smart phone! We showcase different tools Weld.com uses to capture those pretty arc shots you all love.

    While I'm much more interested in doing the weld, rather than getting the shot..... I've been a subscriber of welding channels for years, and have always wondered how quality arc shots were captured. Really appreciate you putting this video together and sharing. Thanks!

    I've tried the gold reflective lens and it isn't as green as the non coated lens, the ND filter is good as it allows true color. The hill to climb is using manual controls and post processing, and if like me you're the camera guy and the welder then a good tripod, a lot of patience, and trial and error lies ahead 📷

    You should also mention that Melttools will not sell their cameras to individuals.
    I reached out to the company as well as a distributor and the company wouldn’t even give me a quote.
    I was inquiring about the Apex3.
    They stated they only want to sell to schools.
    Every other camera company was happy to give me quotes.

      Yeah great video, however we youtubers are work smith's are looking for solutions, not more hurdles. Melt tools seem they rather get money from schools!!!

    There’s a channel called “100 Ампер” their arc shots just amazing and probably done without any special cameras. I suspect he’s using a ND filter and a massive light source.

    • @tinkertime4588
      @tinkertime4588 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you get any more info on the video techniques that "100 Ампер" is using? I agree the arc shots are amazing. No dimming of the image between Arc off and arc on and the weld puddle is pretty easy to see.
      Do you know of any other channels that have good Arc Shots? I think Jody at weldingtipsandtricks seems to have good arc/puddle shots.

    • @vladshmit
      @vladshmit 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tinkertime4588 He's keeping the technique a secret but from what I know, he's using an ND filter accompanying an extremely bright light source. Also, my guess is a polarizing filter to get a better puddle view.

    Can the UV from the arc damage the sensor in your iPhone camera after a while? Should you use a UV filter when recording welding arcs? I might also ask the question about IR too.

      1000 times yes I've fried 2 phone cameras before i started putting a conventional welding lens in front

    • @ypaulbrown
      @ypaulbrown ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@owenbalzer6582 the damage was done by the light intensity , not the UV......

    • @ypaulbrown
      @ypaulbrown ปีที่แล้ว +4

      999, the UV will not hurt the sensor, it is the intensity of the light that does the damage, a UV absorbing filter will do nothing for protecting the sensor, but it will protect your lens from sparks.....so use some sort of Neutral Density filter, polarizer, or welding filter, the plastic gold coated ones will give a truer color, as some of the newer Auto Darkening ones, the glass gold coated filters will still have a very green cast, the gold is there to remove the Infrared waves which produce heat and also have an effect on your eyes leading to cataracts, the UV on the other hand is what burns the retina......it is safe to look at the digital screen of a DSLR,Phone, or video camera with out a filter, but the brightness will be overwhelming and you probably will not see much......by the way, the variable neutral density filter Andrew refers to is actually 2 polarizers , when one is turned, it cancels out the light coming through the other, you can make your own if you have 2 polarizers.......hope this helps, Paulie Brown

      @@ypaulbrown Thanks for the hints. Good reminder to wear a welding helmet when closely watching or photographing someone welding.

      @@ypaulbrown The UV will damage the lenses as most lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic. Over time the uv will cause the lens to craze (micro cracks) and will become unusable and not replaceable. A DSLR with a UV filter stacked on a variable ND along with tweaks to the internal camera settings will get you some great arc shots. The higher end ND filters do a much better job than the cheaper ones. Tweaking in post is another factor also.

    This is really handy I thought about videos of the equipment repairs I do in the field but I’m not really a professional photographer so I haven’t tried to do it yet but I think people could benefit from seeing real world in the trench welding repairs even if it’s only what didn’t work lol sometimes we’re in 6 foot of snow trying to put an excavator boom back together in negative temps fighting frozen iron that’s cracking worse with every little move you make maybe people will want to watch that I don’t know but when I tell people outside of those there in the moment with me they seem blown away by it so maybe it’s interesting to others too

    Great vid! I can tell the camera is a Canon EOS RP. Can you call out the specs on the lenses you're using? Lastly would older DSLR cameras such as the Nikon DL3200 produce the same results?

    I’ve had an idea for making a 2x4 style lens that uses a camera and screen on the inside of the “lens” I’ve seen some beautiful ace shot on instagram. Don’t know if this could be possible but it would give the welder the ultimate image with being able to adjust the lens for them.

      do not know where you got that information, but you seem to be missing a lot of other industries that use both, ship building uses more SAW welding......
