    The persona theming has been really strong the last few games. Persona 3 is about accepting death and the fact that youre mortal (which is why they need to shoot themselfs to use their personas), persona 4 is all about accepting yourself and your flaws , and persona 5 is about standing up against the world, not just letting things happen and taking fate into your own hands. Great series, really strong messages

    • @fr0ggykazu

      Persona 4 is also about finding the truth within a fog of lies. (hence the foggy setting)

    • @827023685
      @827023685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The theming is strong but I liked that persona 3 was very mature but persona 4 was very anime-ish. It took some time to get invested in it as much as I was in persona 3 because the story in 4 felt a lot more simple. However, when it comes to game mechanics, persona 4 wins. If there was a persona game that had storytelling like 3 and game mechanics like 4 or 5?(Haven't played it yet) I would buy two copies just to support it.

They do change some things from the games here and there but the main themes and story is pretty much left intact. Also yeah some of the main themes in Persona 3 are about death and appreciating life, hence the guns.

  • @pezdispencer113
    @pezdispencer113 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Every game basically has re-releases with the exception of Persona 2. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are separate games, one set after the other. P2 is a duology, whereas P3FES is a rerelease with an expansion pack for P3, P3P is a remake on the PSP (with a number of gameplay changes due to hardware limitations). P4G and P5R are the same as P3FES, rereleases with additional content.
    The butterfly is the physical manifestation of Philemon, who is basically like the good deity of this universe. He is the one that gives the P1 crew their power and he created Igor. Igor is a recurring mentor character that helps guide each of the protagonists of the games and helps them fuse their personas. You called Igor the penguin in your Anime openings video, the short hunchback man with the long nose.
    People do not turn into Personas in these games, however Digital Devil Saga (which is another SMT spinoff) the characters do actually turn into demons. Personas are like the manifestation of a part of their psyche, they are part of the characters but are also physically separate at the same time.
    Persona 3 has four movies, which together cover the full plot of the game. These movies are actually quite good, but they are better experienced after playing the game since some context is slightly removed and some elements are changed/order of events are slightly jumbled. I'm pretty sure you can watch them without the game (can only properly confirm for the first one, 'Spring of Rebirth') its just that the game enriches the experience. I highly recommend them.
    The suicide imagery of P3 is very intentional. Each of the modern era games have a theme, Persona 5's is Rebellion and fighting corruption. Persona 4's is the hard truth vs the easy/convenient lie. Persona 3's theme is Death, coming to terms with your own mortality and dealing with the aftermath of it. Each of the P3 characters are affected by death in some way, the protagonist (blue hair guy on the train) for example lost both of his parents in a fatal car crash 10 years prior to the game so he's become very emotionally stinted and disconnected as a result, not even caring about his own safety. He's basically dead on the inside and very apathetic of everything happening around him.
    The story is EXTREMELY important. People play these games primarily for the story and the characters, the gameplay is fun but its not really the main selling point. Persona games often run 80-100+ hours for a single playthrough.
    You joke about the girl in blue with the book (Elizabeth), but she is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than everyone in that room, with the only possible exceptions being the P3 and P4 protagonists (though likely only P3 Protag since he's canonically the strongest Persona user out of P3-P5).
    There's a big tone difference between each games. P3 is a very dark and serious game, whereas P4 is much more light hearted and chill. P5 is somewhere between the two. The 'suicide element' is from P3, whereas the upbeat stuff you're seeing is from P4.
    The Skirt pattern design is part of their uniform. Yasogami High School's uniform is the plaid skirt with a white top. Again the P5 school uniform Shujin Academy has plaid pants.
    The reason P5D is remniscent of P3D and is a (animation wise) better opening than P4D is because P4D was actually the first dancing game to come out. After it was successful they worked on and released P3D and P5D at the same time.
    There was a switch up, but its earlier than you think. P1 and P2 duology were done by a different game director and were much closer to typical JRPGs. P3 was a reboot of the franchise which added many new elements that are considered standard for a Persona game nowadays, the most notable of which was the idea of the Calendar Year mechanic. P4 and P5 still use this mechanic and have built on what P3 established, whereas P1 and P2 are very different games (and are largely ignored by Atlus themselves).

    Each main game has a specific theme and even different ways they summon their Personas (which yeah, are more like Stands from Jojo, not transformations)
    Persona 3 was the one with the shooting themselves lol. That is often considered the darkest of the series, the whole theme is centered around death with its motto "Memento Mori" roughly translating "Remember you are mortal". But about that...they arent shooting themselves lol. Those arent even guns. Those are called Evokers, and they are in the shape of a gun, and you point it as if to shoot yourself to kinda trigger your fight or flight response to summon your Persona in that game.
    And yeah, there are 3 Rhythm games for the series, with music this good why not? Lol. The first was the P4 one, which was actually a sequel with it's own story. Then years later they made P3 and P5 dancing at the same time, these with little to no story, mostly just fun character interactions, but still fun rhythm gameplay!
    The Q games were spinoffs that not only brought the cast's of P3, P4 and P5 together in one game, but crossed over with another series. It had the characters, music and themes of Persona, but it used the gameplay style of the Etrian Odyssey series, which focuses on 1st person dungeon crawling with the turn based battles.
    P3 was a swap for the series and started "Modern" Persona. P1 and both P2 games were more normal JRPGs, while P3 onward mixed the RPG with social simulator, which increasing your bonds with people would give you advantages in battle later.

    The opening you guys watched after the first one was for a remake of the first game. Basically, every game in the franchise had a remake that either improved/added on to the experience of the original game. Idk about the ones for Persona 2 (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment), but the remakes for Persona 3 onwards were more like expansions to the original games, on top of some fixes probably :3

  • @kmaple9
    @kmaple9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    P2 Innocent Sin has a sequel in P2 Eternal Punishment
    P3 is the original game, P3 FES is updated gameplay with a sequel segment, P3P is P3 with even further updated gameplay, but with an optional female protagonist route which has different friendship options.
    P4 is P4, P4G is updated version with additional characters and an additional story segment added in. The same applies to P5R with P5.

    Never got the chance to play P1 and P2 but on P3, P4 and P5. The themes of this games are:
    P3 - Accepting Death (it has something to do with unlocking their "power" by shooting themselves with a gun but its not actually a real gun, accepting death because the story is about death itself, like how people deal with their loss, people facing it in a short time, do you have regrets if you die, and more.)
    P4 - Accepting the truth (playing it has an ingenious way of encouraging players to visualize relating to themselves within a video game. thus its about the characters in the game accepting their "true self")
    P5 - Freedom (breaking free from slavery to corrupted adults in the society)

    The series is riddled with heavy, heavy in symbolism, like dripping with it. The gun? Yea, to use you're power you have to face youre own mortality. The constant mas ripping in P5? Well, just show your true self. Persona? Well, kinda a term for the facettes of ones personality which change based on with whom you interact. Also these are often re-releases, because mother atlus wants to milk em.

  • @omarninopequeno
    @omarninopequeno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my opinion, if you only plan to play 1 game, play Persona 5 Royal, as Persona 3 and 4 have great anime adaptations. However, as someone that has played every Persona game starting from 3, it's definitely better to experience 3, 4, and 5 in game format. With Persona 3, you should play either Persona 3 FES or Persona 3 Portable, the first one was on PS2 and has anime cutscenes throughout plus a sort of sequel included in the game, whereas Portable doesn't have those things but instead has some QoL improvements made in P4 plus an option to have a female protagonist instead. Maybe not feasible due to time constraints, but probably the ideal to do would be play P3FES and afterwards replay it with P3P as the female protagonist if you ever feel like playing it again, as the social links (all the character stories and bonds) are different for the female protagonist. With Persona 4, straight up play Golden, it's the definitive version plus it's very accessible being on Steam. With Persona 5, play Royal, it's also the definitive version and that's on PS4. Persona Q and Q2 are spin-offs where characters meet, in Q the P3 and P4 cast meet, and in Q2 it's the P3, P4, and P5 casts, and even the 2 different P3 protagonists appear together. The arena games are fighting games where the story is a sequel to both P3 and P4, also worth checking out. And yeah, the dancing games are all great, only the P4D game has a significant and actually good story, P3D and P5D are literally the characters being summoned because the P4 cast danced in P4D to compete and see which cast has better dance moves.

    • @omarninopequeno
      @omarninopequeno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That said, Persona 4 Golden is my favorite videogame ever :) and by the way, each story is completely different, P3 is about an extra hour that happens at midnight when some weird stuff happens and only a limited amount of people, that being the main cast, can experience it and summon their personas there. In P4, it's about trying to find a murderer, as bodies start to appear soon after the game begins. In P5, the story is about the protagonist having access to an alternative reality, where they can change evil people's hearts, doing this as "phantom thieves" and trying to avoid being caught.

    Hey idk if you guys will read this comment but this is my recommendation on the game order, I would watch you guys play btw!
    Persona 5 Royal (ps5)
    Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita & PC)
    Persona 3 FES (PS3)
    Persona 2 (PS1 & PSP)
    Persona 1 is extremely outdated but its on PSP if you wanna try it eventually.
    You dont have too worry much about the spin-offs! Also, you can play them in any order, but I really recommend going backwards. The older games are harder to get into, Persona 5 is just really good for newcomers to the series. Like some people maybe already said, they’re all their own stories. You can legit play in any order (the only connection is a few missable easter eggs). But I recommend this order heavily. It will just make for a more fun experience

    If you qa t to get into the games then I would suggest starting with 3, 4, and 5. You can do any order that you want as they are great standalone games with only mentions of a few characters in them for long time fans. The spinoffs are the ones where they lean heavily on the needing past games knowledge to be able to fully appreciate it. For versions, 3 you can go for FES or portable, Golden for 4, and Royal for 5. They are basically the definitive editions of the game with improved gameplay tweaks as well as additional story to go with the original ones.

    The music & style are some of the things Persona fans love about it.

    Highly recommend playing the games, they're all pretty great. Maybe you guys could livestream a playthrough someday! You could start with 3, 4, or 5 honestly. The older ones are okay, but feel vastly different, almost inferior, to the ones I listed. They can be super frustrating if you aren't already familiar with the SMT series...
    If you have a PS4, Persona 5 Royal is the more recent and most beginner-friendly game I'd say. If you have Steam, you could also grab Persona 4 Golden which was recently ported. Really good port and cheap too! Some highlights:
    - Cool visual aesthetic, these games always have STYLE! Also, the OSTs are fantastic.
    - Lovable/memorable characters
    - Lengthy, Interesting stories full of twists and turns (The Persona games all have really fun stories, there are a lot of choices you have to make in these games which can impact your playthrough as well as the ending). JoJo was a direct inspiration, so expect a lot of goofy humor mixed with surprisingly dark/emotional moments. This ain't for kids.
    - PERSONAS! If you're a fan of JoJo and/or monster taming games like Pokemon, you'll really enjoy this game! You negotiate with demons in order to convince them to fight by your side, like Stands. Each demon has unique skills, strengths/weaknesses, personalities, and... you can FUSE them together to make different personas, choosing which skills or traits you want to carry over. Lots of unlocks and customization options there.
    There's a lot more that I'm missing, but yeah... Check it out sometime. You won't regret it.

    I really like the openings for the first p4 and p5 not their enhanced editions.
    I don't know why exactly but I feel like the first ones are more true to the experience of the game and the enhanced ones are more based off of the fan base since release or something, idk.

    I’m telling you now. The story does matter. I’ve only played persona 5 and haven’t even beaten it yet, but the game is very story heavy. And that leads me to believe the others are. Especially after persona 3’s opening. But yeah. The story matters a lot

    everyone is crazy about Persona 5 now, sure... but let the sheer amount of time dedicated to Persona 4 characters in this compilation be a testament to just how iconic and important 4 is to the series as a whole, even to future installments, the only reason Persona 3 and 5 had dancing games was because Atlus expected them to do as well as 4 Dancing did
    Persona 4 just refuses to die and it's not going to just disappear soon

    Persona 5 is my favorite... While the vanilla version has more coherent story I advice you to play Royal version just for the gameplay and the new final boss which is probably my favorite antagonist of all time. (The problem with Royal story is that it adds story bits just for the sake of adding them.)
    Persona 4 is really good, it's a mystery story where you have to find the killer, while saving the next victims from being killed. I never expected any of the twists... Characters are the best written in Persona series but the game as whole pales in comparison to P5.
    Persona 3 has the most thought provoking themes (the game's main theme is "Death") and most outlandish premise, but otherwise pales in execution and gameplay compared to P4 and P5.

    P1 and P2 are great games, but you'll find the best enjoyment from P3Fes, P4 Golden, and P5 or P5R.
    And no you don't have to play them in order, it only helps you get injokes or references to other games. So please give these games an honest shake.
