    Great video, Will. I had a lot of fun at this year's Okie-Tex looking through that night vision eyepiece on Elvira. The views were fantastic! As nice as your video is, nothing compares to actually seeing an object like the Helix Nebula through the NV eyepiece.

    That. Is an incredible setup. Quite literally out of this world. I cannot understand how anyone can ever believe a refractor or sct can compete with a tube ! Man. What a system.

      It’s a lot of fun! I think it’s hard to say it’s better than regular observing but it definitely does give you another perspective. 🤘😁

      Image quality. There is no noise whatsoever when observing through a scope. I, and many others, prefer a darker noiseless image that shows detail instead of basically pure noise with barely any detail.

    Very high-spec’d tube on that PVS-14! Damn I’m jealous. That’s beyond aviation grade. I wonder what the FOM and HALO are.

      @@DeepSkyDude SNR of 41 and 72 line pair yields a 2952 FOM. EBI of 0.5, this is truly an exceptional tube.

    Really interesting about using a Night Vision Monocular at the Eye Piece. Is there an entry level night Vision Camera available worth looking at , as the Cameras on the link are way out of my budget ?

      You should have a big dobsonian like 16 inch or 18 to see like this but real colour without night vision it like silver cloud spiral galaxy

    Thanks for sharing this great video. I find NV fascinating for astronomy. In your video I can see random spots twinkling, is that something that happens also when you watch live with NV? If so, then how distracting do you find it and can it be somehow remedied?

      Yeah that’s called scintillation. It’s a by product of night vision devices. While you can spend more money to lessen the effect, it will pretty much be in there no matter what night vision device you’re using. I don’t find it distracting at all while viewing. Your brain can be trained to ignore it pretty easily.

    I figure you could use a PVS-14 to effectively increase the aperture of a telescope as well, at the expense of a noisy image. I wonder what ways there are to improve this method?

    Since ZWO ASI462mc camera is sensitive to Near infrared. Will it help to photograph in IR as you've shown???

      Nah this is a completely different thing. It isn’t IR, it’s visible light that has been amplified.

    Wow I didnt know that amateur astronomy can go this far. It is amazing what eqipment we are able to get these days. Of course it's constly, but it's doable if you put your mind to it.

    Interesting, I just picked up the same TV PVS device and in my backyard in the city with enough ambient light to read a book by, I don’t have any noise like in the video.
    Right now I’m just using a Plossl 32 with and without a filter and set the PVS gain to the lowest to provide the most contrasty image and wow.
    Makes my TV85 perform better than my 10” Dob I parted with last year.

      Yeah if you turn the gain up you’ll get more scintillation. In order to record video with a phone’s camera you really need the gain most of the way up. For visual use you can keep the gain very low and still get a great result.

    Is it possible to take these same images using long exposures, or is the earth rotating too quickly?

      Good question. These videos seem to be stabilized fairly good, Id assume that would be possible. But I'm not sure how long exposures work with NVG's, might not make a big difference but I don't know it very well could.

      idk about the rest but here's a link to the same night vision device he had (PVS-14) you can configure it the way you want tube wise to get the same setup (He was using L3 WP unfilmed)

    41 snr and 0.6 EBI? dang man. That is a SUPER night vision tube right there. a normal PVS-14 with a l3 tube costs $4,500... that thing people would pay $6,500 for

      high quality NV here can cost up to 5 grand for a monocular if you want the best

      You should be able to do it with a hydrogen alpha or hydrogen beta filter. You’ll need one with a band pass of 7nm.

      The night vision device itself is a PVS-14. Those can be ordered from many retailers. The attachment stuff is all Tele-Vue. They also sell PVS-14’s as well. I’d give them a call and see what they have first.

      @@petergriffin383 it depends on the ambient light pollution. In the city the NVG’s amplify the light pollution along with the stars at 1x so sometimes it doesn’t help. In non light polluted areas, it absolutely increases the stars you can see. It’s wild.

      @@DeepSkyDude Well with a telescope aimed at stars, with a tiny FOV you ain t gonna see much zooming past will you! lol.
      Ive been sky watching for 10 years, and once in a blue moon, I will catch round objects in fighter formations travelling much faster than satellites. Altitude is hard to gauge, but its not at commercial airliner heights that's for sure.
      I once witnessed a satellite looking object, do a right angle 90 deg turn without losing its forward velocity.
      These happenings are super rare, which proves to my mind it is rare - and very real.

      That’s NGC 253, the Sculptor Galaxy. Definitely one of my all time favs!!

      That's a super nice telescope. Nice video.
      I live in Pennsylvania. At 3:00 am directly above my house I see something like that with just a PVS 14 gen 3 white phosphorus very thin filmed. ( all PVS 14s are filmed. The real thin filmed ones they advertise filmless but they have a very thin film) PVS 14. Its directly above my house . I have to lay on my deck to look at it or my neck starts hurting.
      What can what I am seeing be?

      @@briankudalis9572 so I did some digging and actually not all PVS14 are filmed. Thin filmed and unfilmed are two different things. Thin filmed doesn’t work well for astronomy at all.

    shocking. why would anyone with all that quality gear not connect a good ASI2600 and take quality images. Why a night scope and cell phone? No logic or reason to this? The entire video I keep thinking wtf. This is like formula 1 racing but putting a VW beetle power plant in the car.

      LOL. Umm. Have you ever tried to image with an astrocam on an ALT/AZ mount? You need field de-rotators, auto-guiding and then you have to process the image the next day. You don’t have to do any of that with this set up. This set up is meant mainly for visual use with the iPhone as a secondary accessory. Lol that thought never crossed your mind, did it? 😆😆😆 There’s plenty of “logic and reason” for this. It’s fun and it’s a different perspective when you see it visually. And your analogy of the VW is laughable. Clearly you’re someone who doesn’t get it. 🤷🏼‍♂️
