SLEEPER BIG TURBO 300ZX Makes the New Z Look Slow

- The Twin Turbo Nissan 300ZX Z32 has always had a special place in my heart. With it's very unique VG30 engine, a fairlady legacy, and it's Lamboghini Diablo style headlights - it's an overall great package for a tuner car. However I feel as though these cars are always overlooked by its JDM peers of the same era. Thankfully our buddy Steve was kind enough to let me drive his prized possesion - his very period correct BIG TURBO Z32. So has the 300ZX aged well as a tuner car? Let's talk about it.

So keep the VG30 or swap it?
Only engine I'd ever swap in a z32 is a vr30. Honestly though the vg30 is so rare to see I always get sad when they get swapped out..
Keep it! The swaps are overdone… except the VR, as stated above
Keep
She's a keeper 👍
What about the vh45 swap ?
Every time I roll my Z32 out, I get people hi-fiving me, giving big thumbs-up, etc. A priceless experience.
Lets go! The Z32 deserves so much more love than it gets!
Tell people to stop beating them to crap and not taking care of them. So many around me have horrible paint, poor engine maintenance for the turbo and non turbo variant. And than people not properly upgrading them.
I don't get this. People know what these cars are considering what Nissan did with them in racing. They were just too expensive half way through like the Supra.
@@petrolhead8851 I remember the z32 having an equally large jump in price. We're talking 50 grand plus back then. That's expensive for the average person in the 90s considering you could get something new for half that.
We hope the drifters are still broke and won't destroy them.
Not a ton of good examples honestly most of them I see are clapped tf out it’s like the demographic of buyers just didn’t take care of them for some reason lol
Finally a high horsepower Z32 300ZX that’s not an engine swap, also I love how period correct it is 🔥
I agree with you on that one. I recorded one on my channel too that made 900 with a VG. Beautiful cars.
@@shaneomatic9188 god damm that must’ve been insane
Finally?
This is nothing new
Same. This feels like an early 2000’s build. I had two z32’s in the mis 2000’s and loved them. There is no better sound than the thump a twin turbo z32 makes when you let off the gas and clutch in to shift. Ive never heard it from another car and it completely brought me back when i hear dit in the video.
@@NovemberFoxtrotRC yea I was about to say it has a very early 2000’s import tuner, also oh wow really that’s cool
Always love some Z32 content, surprisingly not much out there on TH-cam about them.
pls dont....i dont want it to be overpriced
My Uncle had a 2+2 z32 with t-tops back in 93 and would pick me up from middle school every day. That cockpit layout and the looks of the car absolutely blew my mind. The only car I'd want more is an FD. Not a Lambo, Ferrari, or even an r34. I want a z32 and an FD, both painted satin black. Also, the z32 doesn't use the same headlights as a Diablo. A Diablo uses the same headlights as a z32. :)
I could say the very same here bro... my first time sitting in this car I was like wow look at all these buttons switches. Like this car was just in it's own league
300zx definitely doesn't get enough love and I've never understood why. It's one of my all time favorites and at one time was my absolute favorite.
Everyone hates working on them. Hardcore Z Car guys in 90s eventually went to back muscle/pony cars or other JDM platforms.
Had a 300zxTT been in the Fast and Furious, the story would be different.
People will be scared to try and maintain a 300zx but will hop into a Subaru platform 😭🤦
The VG30DETT isn't hard to work on. It's the people that don't know how to work on a well built, well engineered car. And my DudeInBlue, Nissan made the headlights, it was an engineering feat never done before because of the projection angle. Lamborghini bought the headlights directly from Nissan and covered with trim the Nissan stamp in the headlight. Z car owner for 24 years, 5 Zs total.
I completely agree with this I own a rhd slicktop tt manual
its hard to work on compared to other 90s tuner cars besides the 3000gt vr4 which is the same way cramped engine bay but still easier to work on than new cars
no it hard to work on i have one and sometime it's a pain in they ass but good car
Exactly lamborghini could not design a headlight that fit the 60 degree angle they wanted without being a popup headlight
Ditto! Just need the right tools, some patience and an appreciation that you’re working on an engineering marvel.
The VG30 is seriously one of the best sounding V6s of all time.
I separated my exhaust with a custom 3" and no x pipe or h pipe, and it sounds so fricken amazing.
You haven’t heard the vr30 in it’s full glory from the new Nissan z then. It’s definitely in top 3. Listen to the first 30 seconds of tj hunts “first drive in 500hp nissan z”
Man why does TH-cam keep deleting my link? But search that video up. The reason why the vr30 in the Nissan z sounds so bad stock is because it has a very restrictive catback 1.75inch, muffler, resonators, and it has 4 catalytic converters. All that removes it’s sound.
One of my favorite golden era JDM cars. This one looks beatiful so far, yea I'm still watching...
Edit: Done now, loved it. Its awesome how he updated it so tastefully, and sticking with the V6 is more of an original type of build.
The VG30 sounds amazing as well. In the 1990s we had a local guy that specialized in racing with nissans and turning them "hennie van der linde" before retiring he raced in a 300zx, it was so fast they had to turn the boost down to be competitive
Yup the IMSA z32 made 1000whp on factory heads.
The 300 ZX and my Dodge Stealth, they STILL look great even to this day!!! Owned mine for 2-months and have had several inquiries!!!!
What i have noticed is that they are from people in the Gen Z and young Millennials age groups!!!! A few were like in awe 😮!!!! When i told them the year, they tripped!!!!
These are the reviews i live for. All the newness is cool and all but the 90s just made the scene what it is.
This was my favorite Nissan it still got a piece in my heart
The Z32 is one of my favorite Z cars of all time, and yes you have to take the engine out for the most part to work on it.😂😂
I own a 2+2 one and the driving feeling I got from it made me absolutely love it. Like you stated before, the VG30 is a royal PITA to work on, especially with the issues such as wiring harness, fuel injectors, and vacuum lines. I'm swapping mine due to cost to getting mine into an optimal state to perform an Na-tt is way too costly given some of the components needed are hard to find or really expensive.
Exactly why I sold my na. I had a 2+2 then traded for a 2+0. They ALL need a new engine harness and like 50 deletes. Not to mention an arp center pulley bolt that everyone forgets to upgrade. I spent so much fuckin money on that car to finally have it sorted then the AC shit the bed. Fixed it then the blend door actuator died. Sold it. And I've been 10x happier with my e36 coupe. 🤷
@@Vgk36 🥲I miss my old E36 sedan (Arctic Grey with the m50tu 5sp). Learned stick on that vehicle and now currently own the aforementioned Z32 project car and my daily is an E46 325i.
I have Na-tt sale
Love the z32 ! One the best card ever made. It's ok that people don't appreciate them. You just found out why the real enthusiasts who love Z32's love them. People hating them makes me like it more
The Z32 is the best out of all the Z's. I would take a twin turbo Z32 over any Skyline. It has a more exotic feel than all the other Z's
Agree 100
Feels more exotic than the other Zs + any other Japanese car I've experienced
Agreed. I'm not a huge JDM fan but always loved this one. Easily my favorite JDM, followed by the Supra, then the RX-7. I've owned most my all-time favorite cars that are reasonably priced and thought I was gonna get a white TT one of these about 15 years ago but when I went and looked at it the body looked great but the interior was trashed and it ran like crap. Almost bought it anyway and kind of wish I would have seeing the prices and lack of quality cars now.
The Apex'i AVC-R is an electronic boost controller, not a datalogger. They work extremely well when set up properly.
True, the Power FC was a data logger and I think allowed for adjustments of Fuel Trims
@@RealAnthonyJones the PowerFC was a full piggyback tuning solution
@@CaptainTonus ahh there we go. I do remember them having limited options but I guess it was more of Apexi just having limited options for plug and play harnesses. Then the Greddy E manage came out with harnesses for everything.
I dont really get why people say the VG30 is such a pain to work on.
Number 1: Do not get this car if you dont have a hoist.
Number 2: Do all the deletes. Remove the EGR etc.
Number 3: Do things right the first time. That way you wont have to pull the engine all the time.
Number 4: When you've wrenched this car a year or two, it takes about 2 hours from parking the car till the engine is out. It's not really that bad.
Absolute banger of a song in the beginning. That kinda music has shaped my youth and teenage years
I dont think ive left my house in 7 years of owning my 300zx and not turned heads or gotten compliments. Absolutely love it.
I had a 300ZX TT just over a decade ago. My first turbo japanese car after owning mustangs. I think I spent every weekend at Z1 either buying parts or just hanging out with the everyone. The one car I had to sell because of financial reasons and still regret it to this day.
The interior looks great!! I had a 1990 Nissan Maxima with the VG30 built up, OBX headers, Magna-flow high flow catback, suspension work, BBS wheels, Eurospec clear headlights w/HID's, mine had the HUD on the windshield and the digital dashboard. I was a huge Nissan fan growing up with both my parents owning Datsun B210's(1 hatchback/1 wagon), my brother had a 280ZX and my father bought a 1987 Nissan 300ZX turbo model w/manual shift and t-tops.
This is the definition of a passion build, absolutely love it
Buying a Z32 has been one of my greatest mental health choices ever. Great fun to drive, and people seem to really like it. I’ve gotten a few thumbs up passing by. A bit tight to work on, but super reliable in the time I’ve had it.
I love my z32... about to tear it down and revamp the whole car... sadly it's an NA but still beautiful cars and real fun to drive
NA-T it bro
Supercharge that bad boy!
Not had to make it TT
David this is so rad! Reminds me of when you made a very fall themed review of a z32 in your earlier days of reviews years ago! It was such a pleasure to meet you at Ford Fest at the concession stand by the way! I enjoyed chatting with you dude your the man!🤘
I had a red 95 300zx twin top that I bought from a collector with 19k miles on it with 500hp and that thing scared me but was the most fun I ever had in a car. I can imagine how fast that one is. Keep up the great work!! Ohh I hit an oil slick and totaled the car in which I cried for 2 days Shaking my head. Panning to get another one or a Supra which is 3x more but life is short.
So many people that i know who own these cars tend to have more then 1. I currently own 4 and it will never end. Always a thrill to drive!
I saw the notification and it went away.. and I was all like "wait a minute. Did that just say fairlady?? Hell ya!!
MANNNN I love these fkn cars..my neighbor had 1 and was the sickest thing I ever drove..it was white huge, huge Ferrari like spoiler, and checkered flag decals ...so sick! Thx for this video fr glad it wasn't like a lil 5 minute review video because as u said those cars definitely don't get the attention and love they deserve!
Love em ! A friend of mine had one back in the late 90’s and was a blast to drive!
I always loved the transition to each new generation. Great car terrific video
Was my dream JDM car growing up, glad to see them get some love
This is great, I just finished building mine with same turbos, moved across the country so it been on the back burner but I'm looking forward to finishing it
I remember this song choice from your first Z32 review and honestly I’m here for it.
my favorite Z is the Z32,my grandfather had a factory turbo Z31.I wish my aunt hadn't sold it when he died when I was 16.oh well
I like the camera angle in the back!
I also love the 300z. That was almost my first car but I couldn’t afford it 😢 it was the first car I fell in love with!
These are great looking cars. I remember when they came out (yeah, I’m old af). They looked fantastic 30 years ago and they still look amazing today. Just a testament to the initial design. Stock with 300hp back in the day was enough to smoke just about anything on the road. Still a competent car 3 decades later. Squeezing out about 420-450hp makes this car just about perfect. You can definitely get more, but it’s not really necessary. If I could get 430Hp and make it AWD I’d be perfectly happy. Great car!👍🏻
Steve’s a cool guy!! Nice pick, David… so much for my hopes of you doing mine 😂. I still say you’ve gotta do a 90s JDM special with my buddy Ryan and his other buddy with a GSX
Having owned 5 Z32's over the past 28 years. All were a 2+2 TT. And only one was manual transmission. I love these cars to the bone. Only thing I tended to do was the hicas delete for the rear steering. Braided brake lines. Vented brake discs. And aftermarket coilovers. The rest was never an issue. Until a cambelt needed a change, and a water pump.
The manual one ended up being a track car after few years on the road. And with all the traffic, opted to keep using auto on the road, and manual for track days.
One year I had an idea to put a rebuilt RB engine from a Lexus in. And used the VG in a Hilux pickup. That thing was a nightmare to fit in the Toyota. Though so much fun when other hilux drivers assumed I had changed the exhaust, and only ran a 190bhp. Till they saw the sand blast from that rear wheel drive hilux. As was a struggle to make the 4wd system work with the auto box back then.
Would love to swap an R35 gtr engine and drive system into a Z32 one day
dude vg swapped hilux is so sick, sounds really unique
@@christiansullivan6541 so much fun on sand dunes on beadlock wheels and 14psi
It's nice to see cars form the 90's still on the streets I grew up in the 90's.
Car looks better than a Supra don’t care what anyone says
Just because they worth more doesn’t mean they look better -
Just a lot more outhere so look more common to the eye
Nice call back to your first 300zx Z32 video with the music choice 👌🔥🔥🔥 and that classic rare blue interior 👌💘 plus it fits your style perfectly haha
Come drive da zupra.
They still look sooooo good.
Dream car
Same
The Z32 really helped carve out and start the entire 90s JDM craze. Cockpit interior - Beat vettes - Be gorgeous. Great vid and this car is definitely a JDM legend.
Love how you used the same intro song you used in the original review you made 8 years ago!!! one of my favorite songs.
Loved the Miami vice theme and sound at all he end. Nice vibes 😎🤙
You got it right the first time you mentioned the lights but not the second fun fact. Its actually the Lamborghini that uses the Nissan 300ZX headlights. They were already D.O.T. approved but Lamborghini didn't have an approved DOT headlamp design because they were rushing to get the car to market and the lights would have taken long/er time to get DOT approved so they paid Nissan for the design. Fun fact... you can actually see where it says Nissan on the Lambo headlights but they have a little plate that covers the name part. That's all just wanted to point out that they are Nissan headlamps in the Lambo not the opposite. Don't get it twisted 😅
Loved it!!
Yes very cool! My uncle owned two 300zx many years ago. I was fascinated as a child 🎉
I agree with all that! Great car and great vid!
A 1993 300zx was my first car, nice to see some content on it. I hope to own another someday
As a R32 Owner, I fully think the Z32 is the closet you can get being fully USDM and shares a ton of the driving feel of a Skyline up to 70% and thats mkre than most people use anyways. They're tragically underrated. Sure the VG30 is hard to work on but they're a still a great motor when done well and the unique aspect is pretty cool.
That car came out in my early 20s....LOVED IT EVER SINCE!!!
Growing up my mom had a white 300 ZX turbo--white also. Drove nice, leather interior looked and smelled great. Watch out for sandy berms in 2nd though (from past flooding in my case)--it can lose traction quite easily. Luckily zero damage. I'm surprised that I don't see any more around. Still have my 1995 Celica ST--the Corolla engine just will not die -for which I am thankful.
Dude, I love your music choices!
Love it! Loved them 300zx ever since I saw Jimmy build his ls swapped from the beginning
This was awesome! Do it again!
Wish I was out when you filmed this, rode around my area quite a bit lol. Also about the traffic lights, Welcome to VB.
Random as hell but that opening song "against the sun" by Rootkit woke some memories up damn
My fav nissan of all time. Even slightly more then the GTR. Beautiful cars
anyone who works on vgs, salute.
I like it, love it, and want some more of it! Z32’s are such great cars.
These cars are fantastic. One of the great 90’s cars that still holds up after all these years.
those 300zx brolls are sooo good,
I honestly skipped all the parts of you talking, and just focues on the nissan 300zx footage you got ,
this car is so beautiful, timeless design, i'd drive this thing everywhere If I owned one.
Good lawd! That thing sounds AMAZING! The Z32 has always been my favorite Z car, and it's definitely aging gracefully.
I had a 1990 300zx. Sadly it wasn't the twin turbo version but still love that car. Want another so bad!
Good vid.
Love my 300ZX (Z32) TT ! 👌
We absolutely loved your presentation. Although 750 whp would be totally amazing & very scary ha-ha ........ we have found that 400 whp to 450 whp is ideal for a daily drive that is fun to drive and feels 'ALIVE'. ha-ha
Love the fact you used the same song from the other z32 review
Had a tuned up 300zx at our local spot back in the 2000s. It was awesome to see this guy turn out and ruin f-bodies constantly. Only local car that kept up was a 1st gen eclipse gsx that was built up pretty heavily. I'm sure there were faster cars around but this yellow 300zx stands out in memory.
Love your content David! Are you going to start uploading in 4k soon?!
Oh my gosh that Z is so clean! One of my dream cars. I still want one.
Gorgeous car! I’ve always had a soft spot for it since forza 2. Used to drift it all the time!
thats one of my favorite cars, I loved them since the day they came out
I love these cars I wanted one since I was in high school
Bad ass car. Good to see that they are getting some love.
Love it as a s13 lover, that is a beautiful build
That is my personal favorite Z car ❤ over complex but so much character!
I love these cars ❤️
David for me personally I like to 300ZX I like the lines and the body style but the VG 30 it’s kind of complicated, but could be a good platform if you have the knowledge and the patience to push through it keep up the awesome content❤😊👍🏼🤙🏽🙏🏽
Good lord, these still look awesome.
One of my favorite cars ever made. Those tail lights are something else, probably some of the best designed.
Sounds and looks awesome
Ayyyy Z32 content 🤘🤘🤘
Love this body style!!
Oh the lovely fairlady Z from our JDM gods! It needs more love!
The z32 is my dream car I fell in love with these cars after a friend of mine came home from the navy and had imported his twin turbo 2+2 and it was still stock motor stock turbo with modded down pipes and upped the boost slightly made about 350 to the wheels and it spun til 3rd then hooked in 4th and pulled hard easily the fastest car I had been in at that moment in time was used to stock cars or boosted Hondas and never being in rhd drive car before this was an experience aswell 😂 but this car has a choke hold over me ever since I first saw it in person it was a car I knew existed and already like because I’ve seen them on the internet and in pictures but I don’t think it really does the car justice they are so beautifully designed that no matter where you go it’s bound to break necks and now that it’s over 3 decades since the car came out it’s considered a classic car I will own one someday soon 🙏
Always loved and admired 300zx model what a sexy car ❤❤❤
I remember the cobalt green twin turbo that was in the showroom at the dealer I worked at in 2001. Man i wanted that car.
Had a friend who 300Z with twin turbo & just kept it in his garage for the past 23 years. He might knew it was knew gonna be worth a lot in the future
this one of my fav cars
Let's Go David!
Damn that's a good lookin ride!
What a beautiful car. Show more of the car please.
