In this episode I provide the history of the Buick Regal, starting as a top trim level for the reintroduced Buick Century in 1973, then later splitting from the Century to remain on GM's rear-wheel-drive G-body platform and offer the high-performance Grand National and GNX. It would later go back to joining the front-wheel-drive Century again but be the more luxury and higher performance option. Its final iteration was a rebadged Opel built in Germany, and never sold nearly as well as all of Buick's crossovers, leading to the Regal's death by the end of the 2020 model year.

I still have my 1987 Grand National I bought new in Sept 1987 as a 27yo GM employee working at the GM Tech Center. Only 48K miles and garage kept its whole life. My dad had a 1975 Regal company car with the 350 Buick V8.

I loved the mid-1980's Grand Nationals, wanted one so bad but of course way beyond my means as a recent high school grad.
I don't think the most recent Regals could be considered a failure of the car but more the victim of being an orphan that Buick really didn't care about because of the sale of Opel.

When I was a Freshman in HS (86-87) I had to walk by a Buick Dealer on my way home (Brian Buick, Walnut Creek, CA)
and every day I would stop and walk around one of the Grand Nationals they had for sale. Sometimes even walking in the showroom to look at one. I did it so often that the salesmen would just wave "hi Chris" when I walked onto their lot. Man I loved design of those GM RWD coupes! Lots of memories in those RWD Regal sedans too. As an aside: I almost feel sorry for people who didn't go to High School in the 80's. Loved every minute of it!

It wasn't that Buick stopped caring about the Regal, but that GM forced them to kill their performance cars because Buick dared to build a car that could kick the Corvette's ass.

I have 2 2001 SSEi's. Very underrated cars, especially for the money, and they were before my time so it's not nostalgia or anything. Put a stereo with Android Auto in it and you have a more modern car than most cars made before 2015 for under 4 grand, along with more torque and more luxury than most cars made even today (although obviously cars in its tier have higher base performance levels today).

There are a lot of cars that can be linked to it. RAV4 wasn’t some craze that everyone went out and bought and crossovers didn’t just become a craze. It was car manufacturers slowly learning their audiences which were suburban parents who wanted something with room and was more economic than an actual SUV which little needed the actual “utility part”. They basically needed a station wagon. But station wagons are cool so they made crossovers which essentially are just AWD station wagons.

Less than a minute in the hotel parking lot was full on Black Buick Grand Nationals. She couldn't let this one slip by, she said "I thought you told me they didn't make many Buick Grand Nationals". Really easy swap, just had to put the 3.8 motor mounts on the 350 and use the Y pipe from the 350 which lined right up with the existing exhaust system. @@theeoddments960 I believe that a 79 Regal is about 500 lbs lighter than a 69 Skylark, it is a significant weight savings. I loved the 78 and 79 Sport Coupe bodies, to me they were as close to a reincarnation of the 68-69 GS as Buick would get. The last two 69's I did, I installed 67 430's, reason being, the rebuild shop I used, Evergreen in Spokane, WA would order a stock rebuild kit. For 455's that included 8 to 1 pistons, the most common factory ratio, the 430's 10.25 to 1 since that was the only factory ratio. .040 overbore punched them out to about 439 ci.

I agree it was a really nice to look at. It reminded me of the European style estate wagon's I would see whenever visiting my cousins and extended family in Germany every few years. When I found out it was a Opel in disguise, it all made sense. My cousin has a VW Passat Estate wagon, and it's a great ride, (nothing like those North American Mexico made versions, especially on the autobahn) What's nice is they handle really well, not high profile like a SUV, but have room in the rear. It's sad we don't get the better version of the Passat, instead a version catering more for the Chinese market segment. But even that is going away in 2023, as the Passat won't be manufactured in NA after that. Instead VW moving to offer SUV's and crossovers like everyone else is.

I had an '87 Turbo Regal with the T Package; It's the same thing as a GN but it was actually lighter because it featured 15" aluminum wheels v the 15" steel wheels on the GN. Funny how today, a 2021 Honda Odyssey is just as fast, stock, as the turbo regals were back in '87. In the T-Type and T-Package, you had more options than with the GN. YOu could have the plush bench seat, column shifter, and you could have chrome trim instead of the sporty blackout package. That made for some interesting combinations of the Limited (ultra-luxury version) with the turbocharged 3.8L SFI under the hood. Check out Dennis Kirban's guide to Turbo Regals for a comprehensive look into the TUrbo Regal as a whole, if interested.

Nice! My favorite was the Grand National. As a kid in the 1980s, one of my car nut neighbors traded in his 1986 Mustang GT Convertible for a brand new 1987 Grand National. I was surprised, he had always been a Ford guy, and so I was I at the time. But I quickly saw the appeal of Grand National, though as it gained recognition, it wasn't quite as stealthy. A Grand National wagon (based on the same G body) would have been a really cool sleeper. I'm sure someone made their own.

I've just found out some interesting news about the Buick Regal. Opel, still have good major ties with Buick. After Opel was sold off to Stellanteis, it was more of a handshake deal to keep GM on float in the US market. So they had to pay Opel to continue building the Buick Regal models once Opel was sold. Even after their Regal discontinuation in the US market. They are still built by Opel in China. But this time, they built the Regal as a Buick, not as an Opel rebadge. Because they discontinued the model as an Opel in favor of Buick's popularity in China. So, they began to co-develop with Buick for the next gen model after the US model was dropped. But GM still had to pay Opel for Manufacturing the Regal as a Buick. That's exactly what they did for their latest redesign in 2024. Very, very beautiful car. Too bad we couldn't get it here in the US

My grandmother had a 77 Regal that I remember being so plush and mushy. When she died in 1992 it only had like 40K Onnit. I remember thanking God that I was only twelve so I wouldn't be the grandkid that got stuck driving the powder blue Jew Canoe. Down here in Miami there were tons of the two door Regals and I had a friend whose mom inherited a 1982 from her parents and he got stuck with it. It was a lot cooler than my grandmother's 77. One day at a football game somebody approached him in the parking lot and offered to buy it for $3,000. My friend said yes he would think about it with images of acrx in his head. Imagine our shock when the guy reaches into his back pocket and pulled out $3,000 cash. That generation Regal is really in demand right now and my friends still tells me to this day that he wishes he had held onto it. I have to remind him that it was over 25 years ago and chances are that Regal would not still be around today if he had kept it. I have an elderly neighbor who drives a 1994 or 95 Regal with the legendary 3800 and I make sure to treat him really nice at the HOA meetings in hopes that he'll leave it to me in his will. That was my favorite generation of the Regal ever since I saw Bette Midler's character dryvit in the movie Beaches or as my son affectionately refers to the movie as Fat Beaches.

I can't believe they had a new Regal and Regal wagon but canceled it. The wagon is AWD only but it has the 2.0 Turbo. They're not bad looking cars compared to everything else made today. I don't think I would want to own one, but I would like to drive one to see how it feels. I'd like to find a G-Body in decent shape to swap the drivetrain from my 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan. The LT1 doesn't have enough power for the big B-Body, but it would make a G-Body pretty quick

    I had a 3.8 V6 1979 Regal in 1988.
The same year, my best friend bought a 1969 Buick Gran Sport Convertible with a 1970 455 engine in it. The day he took possession, it didn’t have seats or a working speedometer. We slowly restored it back to a respectable condition, starting with pulling some Camaro seats from the junkyard.
I came close to buying a TourX the year they came out. Forum complaints about the lack of parts availability and body panels turned me off of that idea. I suspect that’s just going to get worse, quickly.

During one year's run of the 1-Lap of America, a Buick 3.8L Turbo powered Electra Estate wagon was entered by GM.
I've actually seen a Lesabre Sport Coupe IRL... a rare sight, indeed.
That all said, it's a shame GM didn't take powering its full-size models--even just the Buicks--with the 3.8L Turbo more seriously. Because it would've helped them get through the pinch of pre-'87 CAFE mandates without resorting to making 4-cyl. Firebirds & Camaros.

It was a great car until the engine grenaded itself on Easter in 1990 about halfway home on a 360 mile drive from my grandparents place. Luckily, we had another family member who was following us and we were smart enough to bring along walkie talkies to coordinate rest stops and such.
