"It also kinda feels like someone's groping you slowly from behind, but i kinda like that". You sir owe me a new monitor because mine's covered in coffee now.
I really like the M6 Gran Coupe and it would probably be my choice. You're right that it doesn't jump out, I think I actually prefer that to the bold looks of the CLS63. The CLS is the more capable handler, but the M6 is a bit more comfortable and the BMW M-DCT transmission is very, very good. The GTS is a bit spendy and since Porsche wouldn't lend us a Panamera for a cross-comparison I can't say much outside some limited seat time. You might give the RS7 a look as well.
Thank you for clearly pointing out the differences between the regular Mercedes 7-speed automatic and the AMG-fied version (torque converter replaced by multi-plate clutch) --- it's surprising how many automotive journalists get it wrong.
Alex keep doing a great job you are one of the best reviewer , real good information and presentation very helpful especially before leasing next car Thanks!
I have a love/hate relationship with Quattro. You are correct it is the weight balance that is the problem, but that weight balance is caused by the way Quattro is designed where the front diff is part of the transmission casing. You can't separate one from the other. That being said for most real-world driving AWD is an asset. Also, for most people understeer is more predictable than oversteer so the Audi setup may be preferable to some.
Thanks for the trunk introduction! I know some mobsters who are on the lookout for something stylish, fast, and that has a large trunk. Nice to know a person fits back there! Haha
Like most auto journalists, I drive cars for a living, so if it's sold in the USA I have probably put 500+ miles on it already or I will be driving it soon. Every week we have something new in the garage and on occasion we have 2-3 cars at the same time.
Alex, I believe you mentioned that for 2014 the the 4Matic will be optional. I believe I read that the 4Matic will be standard and there will be two different versions of the 2014 CLS63 AMG to choose from. For 2014 there will be the CLS63 AMG 4Matic and the CLS63 AMG S-Model 4Matic. The 2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model 577 hp with 590 lb. of torque The 2014 CLS63 AMG 4Matic 550 hp with 531 lb.-ft. of torque
Hello Alex, Thanks for the quick reply. I've been doing a lot of research on the purchase of my next vehicle and as of right now the 2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model is toping the list. The 2014 Porsche Panamera GTS and the 2014 M6 Gran Coupe are the other two vehicles that I'm looking at. I was strongly considering the Panny GTS, but it seems so over priced and currently there's no information on the 2014 year model. I've owned two BMWs and the M6 Gran Coupe is nice, but it just doesn't jump out at me.
Good review. My only ask is to have an exhaust note/rev test incorporated with the reviews on the performance cars you do. I just like to know what the vehicle sounds like inside the cabin and out. Keep up the good work, thanks!
You might want to also give the Jaguar XJ Supersport (510HP) or the XJR (550HP) a look. The XJ is an odd duck in that it competes with the S-Class/7 Series but because it is all-aluminium it is lighter than an M5/E63/CLS63 by a decent amount. The latest Jags are all excellent handling machines with the best exhaust note in the business. The downside is their somewhat clunky infotainment system. Performance wise the XJR is within a few tenths of a CLS63 with the performance pack.
I'm not sure that I like the RS7 or not (Audi is definitely the cheapest of the bunch), but I do like the I like the look of the S8. I still have time on my side so I'm will continue to do my research and I'll look at M6 again. When and if Porsche ever release any information on the 2014 Panny GTS, hopefully the prices are more comparable to the other cars in the same category. Thanks for the videos, they are a valuable source of information. Tony
Let's see, the CLS is $109,150 and the M6 Gran Coupé is 113,000. That's less than $4,000 difference. The Mercedes transmission shift times are quoted at 250ms and the BMW DCT is 75ms, and the CLS is 550HP and 590lb-ft with 2014 bringing 577/590 while the M6 is 560/500. I'd call that more power, slower shifting and price competitive. BMW and Mercedes consider one another competition as well. Anything else?
The AMG is a completely different animal. I drive a 2012 E-Class which is an amazing car. If you can afford the AMG get it and of course make sure you get the performance package, however the engine in the 550 is completely capable of putting a smile on your face if you don't want to spend $114k on a car.
I don't think the price difference is justified when you consider the extra money you pay in maintenance, insurance, and the fact that you can't use all of the power in daily driving.
Having driven both, the cls550 is plenty. I had the opportunity to compare em for a few hours each at a bmw national sales event. While the 550 is a brute, the AMG is a monster for bragging rights. My dad ended up getting a 650i gran coupe not bc better performance but the interior was so much easier to live with. I couldnt figure out the radio in any of the Mercedes. Still both really nice cars.
You never mention the Porsche Panamera which, I think, is obvious competition for the Merc, BMW and Audi "4 door coupe" products. In terms of handling, powertrain and (especially) transmission, I think the Panamera beats them all, even in base guise. Yes, something like a GTS is another price class, but in the < $115,000 class, the Porsche is more than competitive.
"The Audi has the Quattro system so it will head for the bushes the first time you enter a corner" Then later... "The Audi has the nice Quattro system" So is Quattro good or bad? I always understood the cause of the Audi understeer being because the majority of the engine was forward of the front axle. While BMW have theirs behind that front axle. Would you say Porsche 911's have snap oversteer because of their RWD implementation, when it is caused by the engine being over the rear axle?
you got quite a few things wrong here, the m6 has MORE power than this vehicle, not less. and next years cls will have more power. AND the cls is not a competator to the m6, the m6 is about 25,000 dollars more than the cls and competes more with the sl63 amg. the voice activated system of the cls is HORRIBLE, doesnt recognise anyhthing you say. ths the same for BMW as well. as for the transmission, it actually shifts as fast as a dual clutch, . whats slower is the throttle response
Cars are getting to the point where there are to many gadgets that aren't necessary. I wan't an exceptional, no frills car that performs well. I don't want a butt massage,I don't want it to tell me I am getting tired etc etc etc etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Mercedes but I resent the thought of paying an extra $50,000 for features I dislike.
Nobody is forcing you to buy the car. Buy a car that has all the features you like and none of the features you dislike. That way you would avoid paying an extra $50,000. Problem solved.
Problem is, nice cars now have all these unnecessary accessories as standard equipment. Twenty years ago you could get an M6 or SLC without lots of gadgets. i want a quality car without expensive features I will never use. Gadgets don't make the car but they do add vestigial weight, complexity and cost. I would prefer the option to get lighter wheels instead of having my rear end rubbed. :)
Mercedes makes a car just like the CLS 63 AMG without the gadgets that's $50,000 cheaper. It's called the CLS 550. Maybe you should do some research instead of making asinine complaints about a high end performance version of a luxury sedan being too expensive.
We sure are, just as soon as we can get our hands on one. We're not sure when that will be but we hope it will be soon.
"It also kinda feels like someone's groping you slowly from behind, but i kinda like that". You sir owe me a new monitor because mine's covered in coffee now.
Same here bro. He kinda likes it man...
I found it offensive! #metoo
very thorough review. thanks.
Hands down one of the best reviewers on the net. keep up the great job
Mercedes will be better then BMW in luxury forever!
I really like the M6 Gran Coupe and it would probably be my choice. You're right that it doesn't jump out, I think I actually prefer that to the bold looks of the CLS63. I do NOT want to know what you do in the weekends, sir
I knew someone was gonna comment on that
Your review is very informative. I like how you compare and contrast competing vehicles.
Really NICE and detailed review!!! covered both the driving performance of the car and the practicality of the car!!
I have a love/hate relationship with Quattro. That is the driver alert system, based on your driving it decided if you are sleepy and will tell you to take a rest.

Right, that was firmed up after we shot the video by Mercedes. We will insert a note in the video to clarify that.
Like most auto journalists, I drive cars for a living, so if it's sold in the USA I have probably put 500+ miles on it already or I will be driving it soon. Every week we have something new in the garage and on occasion we have 2-3 cars at the same time.

Hello Alex, Thanks for the quick reply. I've been doing a lot of research on the purchase of my next vehicle and as of right now the 2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model is toping the list. Good review. My only ask is to have an exhaust note/rev test incorporated with the reviews on the performance cars you do. I just like to know what the vehicle sounds like inside the cabin and out. Keep up the good work, thanks!
I prefer the S7. If you haven't done a review on the S7 please do so.
You might want to also give the Jaguar XJ Supersport (510HP) or the XJR (550HP) a look. My two recommendations would be the M6 gran coupe and the 2013 range rover supercharged! Great video aswell love the CLS

I've got a CLS63PP and it looks way better than the M6. But the new M8 is the best.
ph4tboy how’s the back seat space for adults? He makes it look as if the car isn’t practical. And m8 is a joke next to the new GT63s...
Thanks for the skip ahead to 12:24 ✊🏻
Nice package. I like it, they did a good job.
Only an 8 for trunk comfort!? Kidnaped people are not going to be happy!
Wait until the new generation CLS comes out with the S model and 4-Matic :-)
Porsche wouldn't lend us a Panamera so we had no decision but to rule the RS7, M6 Gran Coupé and CLS superior.
best looking four door mercedes
Great review!
Please review new MB GL 450 or GL550 or any GL or ML Thanks! They come up with that new bi turbo engines ? Don't know what to think about them
Great review!!!
thanks for this great review
Are you guys going to do a video on the CLA?
My only complaint about my CLS63 is the MCT transmission. Even with shift point reset and fluid flush etc it still feels clunky.
Are the back seats as bad as he makes it out to be?
Love this channel subbed
is CLS 63 AMG necessary for the money ??? or is CLS 550 sufficient ?
The AMG is a completely different animal. I drive a 2012 E-Class which is an amazing car. Yes, still thinking if it is worth the money
Yes it is a tough choice
You forgot to mention that the CLS looks, I'd say about, 200x better than that hideous 6 series.
How is this car in the snow?
You never mention the Porsche Panamera which, I think, is obvious competition for the Merc, BMW and Audi "4 door coupe" products. No one is going to comment on his willingness to just hop in the trunk, canvasing how big it is for all the mobsters who like to ride in style.
Mercedes is the best
I liked this review alot

someone groping from the back...LOL
Thanks!
I agree, I would go with the M6 Gran Coupe also.
Alex, what was the coffee/tea cup icon at the bottom of the speedo gauge?
Thorough reviews. I subbed
Can you do a review on the 2014 Mazda6?
both the cls63 and cls550 but i dont know which to buy what are the differences.
63 is AMG. Way more performance and more HP and Torque than the 550
love it!!

Good reviewer but he always mentioned he's 6ft tall... He's, very proud
Cool review.. But Audi A8 L W12 >>> MB CLS 550 / CLS 63 AMG!!
This is what I call a, "When I win the lottery" car
Nice
nice car!
So many references to an "M". Maybe you should just by a BMW M.
