I have struggled with this tense for a long time, especially in literature where these two tenses are used very often, and I hadn't understood the difference between them until I found your video. Hi, Adam! Please explain more about the usage of past perfect with time adverbs like "before". You said that it is not necessary to use past perfect because a chronology already exists thanks to "before". It is correct to say then: I never saw a bear before I moved to Alaska or I had never seen a bear before I moved to Alaska?

Dear Adam, my instructor always insists that answers should be in different ways for each question i.e., discuss, argument, describe, analyze, what is the difference among these things and explain what it means in each thing, how to write answers for each different question. As he, my instructor, said there must be difference in your answer for each type.

    Thanks for explanation, but in the example with not paying attention students, it doesn't look like sequence of past events, find out is present, hadn't paid - past perfect, why past perfect and not past simple, don't we know for sure which event is first

    • @laurawolfe154
      @laurawolfe154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1st they did not pay attention, that inattention is affecting the 2nd action of finding out. It emphasizes the relationship.
      You could say, "Many students find out in their first year of college that certain high school courses they didn't pay much attention to are actually critical to their academic success." To my ears, this doesn't sound quite right if you're relating one thing to another, or if you're emphasizing their discovery.
