I use normal paper (called 'Art Paper') available on my locality. You can use any kind of paper only some texture needed.

I used normal printer paper in my latest piece.
The paper masking tape ripped off bits of it, but it's not a big deal for me, because I think it adds character to my soft pastel abstract painting.
Just be careful and patient.
