Captain Mulla, went down gallantly with INS Khukri in the 1971 war on the lines of India's old military tradition where, "Captains Don't Abandon Their Ships, No Matter What". He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously for displaying conspicuous gallantry and dedication to duty.

The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) is the second highest military decoration in India and is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. Literally Maha Veera Chakra means extraordinarily bravery award.

Commander Sharma was swimming to safety when he caught his last glimpse of the Khukri: "The bow of the ship was pointing upwards at an angle of eight degrees and sinking slowly. I got a glimpse of Captain Mulla sitting on his chair and hanging on to the railing. He was still smoking a cigarette."

INS Khukri sailed with INS Vikrant during Summer Cruise Exercises in June/July, 1967 while I was on board INS Vikrant as one of the NCC Cadets. Captain Cursetji was the Flag Officer/Commander of Vikrant. It is sad that Khukri had to go down like that with Capt Mulla and much of his crew.

One of the survivors Commander Manu Sharma has told the final moments of the ship and it's valiant commanding officer: "Captain Mulla pushed Lieutenant Kundan Mall and me off the bridge. We tried to take him along with us but he refused and ordered us to jump to safety. We both jumped into the sea from the starboard side."

Captain. M N Mulla was the father figure of people he command . It's foolish to say that he sat in his captains chair and lighted , started puffing his sigret. It is for knowledge of one and all that captain mulla use to smoke SIGAR not SIGRET as mongered by one survivor. Can this individual explain for what act of gallanry he was awarded NAO SENA MEDAL?

INS Khukri was a Type 14 anti-submarine warfare frigate of the Indian Navy. After the beginning of hostilities on 3 December 1971, Indian Naval radio detection equipment identified a submarine lurking in the vicinity of Diu harbour about 35 miles south-west of the port of Diu.

Respect from Pakistan. We pakistanis and Indians largely ignore our naval heros.Ive seen this in India and Pakistan. We must honour these martyrs as well.We must honour PNS khyber and muhafiz.Indians must honour INS khukri. We are always praising army and airforce bcz our subcontinent doesn't have a big naval history I guess. There isn't a very big navy trend in both countries but I'm going to join my navy so that people can realize the importance of having a navy.I think sailors are actually the bravest of soldiers.

Captain Mulla was born on the 15th of May, 1926 in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and was commissioned in the Indian Navy on the 1st of May, 1948. In the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Captain Mulla was a senior officer of a squadron of frigates of the Indian Navy. During war time operations on the night of 9th December 1971, INS Khukri was hit by more than 1 torpedo which was fired from a Pakistani submarine and sank.

INS Khukri was the slowest warship in the squadron because she was testing an improved version of the 170/174 sonar, which required a slow speed to increase detection. This was to be her undoing. The Pakistani submarine sighted the Squadron on the evening of 8 December. It fired two homing torpedoes on a sonar approach, one of which missed Kirpan at 19:57 hrs. The second torpedo directed at INS Khukri struck its magazine at 20:00 hours. INS Khukri was struck by three torpedoes before going down.

When INS Khukri was hit by a torpedo fired from a Pakistani submarine, Captain Mulla decided to ask the crew to abandon the ship and without regard to his personal safety he supervised the arrangements for rescue of his ship-mates in a very cool, calm and methodical manner.

The 14 Squadron of the Western Fleet, Khukri along with sister ships, Kirpan and Kuthar (all named after types of dagger), were dispatched on a hunter-killer mission to destroy the submarine. One reason that may have prompted the decision to deploy two obsolete Blackwood class frigates was that the Indian Navy lacked sufficient numbers of airborne anti-submarine planes at that time.

ICaptain, Mahendra Nath Mulla, choose to go down with the sinking ship. He refused to abandon ship, and passed his life-jacket to a junior officer. He was reported to be in a saluting gesture while sinking down with Khukri. He has remained so far the only Indian captain to go down with a vessel to his watery grave.
