  • This week, I talk about how storytelling in Classic differs from the more modern expansions, and how a "Classic Plus" concept could use that different approach to add new things to the Warcraft story without giving up what makes it feel like Classic in the process.

I really hope Blizzard watches this video! Good points! Specially when you talk about mini storylines to develop some NPCs instead of huge stories where Azeroth is on a big risk.

I would push back a little bit on the notion of "world" vs "the hero", at least in so far as the comparison to FFXIV is concerned.
In FFXIV, the scions are indeed heroes of the realm, accomplishing feats nobody thought possible, but everything around it is grounded and focused on the world. Many of the feats you accomplish are the result of many people and parties coming together to give you the OPPORTUNITY to accomplish the feat. In many cases, you actually lose, or fall short, until you band together with others.
On your own, you are strong, one of the strongest warriors in the ream even, but the general theme of the game is that you can't accomplish everything alone and you need to rely on others. Much of the story in every expansion is focused on the world and the people. You go around helping others, solving problems big and small, forging friendships and alliances along the way. Then when things hit a breaking point, everyone else comes to your aid, to repay your kindness.
The Warrior of light may be "the hero" and the story is experienced through their eyes/glory, but everything about FFXIV is about the world and its inhabitants.
Not to mention, many times throughout the story, you are not even the central character of the story, just someone along for the ride helping others on THEIR journey.
What I'm trying to get at is that, I don't think the problem is necessarily the focus on us being the champion, rather, how the world perceives us as the champion and how the world interacts with us/ we interact with it. In WoW, the "hero" is often made to look omnipotent with everyone overly relying on us and expecting us to waste our time on every little trifling matter. It rarely feels like we are working WITH the world, rather than simply being used by it.
In FFXIV by comparison, we're just some really strong guy that often falls short in many regards but trough our actions, our companions, our alliances, we are put in positions where we can excel and stand out.
Much of this comes to the story-telling method though. Even though we are a silent protagonist, our character often agrees/disagrees with things in cutscenes, smiles, cries, is sad, excited, etc. This goes a long way to us feeling a part of something bigger, compared to WoW where almost everything happens only in writing or high budget cutscenes focused on major characters.

I want all of the SoD narrative content to carry over into whatever season they do next. That means the Paladin quest chains, the Warlock quest chains, the Rogue quest chains, and in fact I'd love for them to go a step further and be like, okay, here's some kind of narrative for who the Wandering Swordsman was. Oh, and for heaven's sake give Mage's an actual narrative quest chain. It's so sad for Mages that the content they got mostly amounted to collecting books.

I find it odd that they don't use classic plus to go into Mount Hyjal during the "time" between Warcraft 3 and Cataclysm. Can't imagine that it was a barren wasteland until a few days before Cata started.

Man, brains are so weird. I had the absolute most random dream last night that you uploaded one of these videos, except it had that super relaxing, soothing background music that used to be used for tankspot raid guides, and it made me go "Oh wow, this is so nostalgic."
That's it. That was the dream. I have no idea what to make of this, but just wanted to share it.
Keep up the great content man, you're a fantastic speaker and really deserve more views.

Spot on about the player character not being THE hero. Bring them along as part of the main story as one of many that helps the main characters.

Absolutely impossible. It's a nice list of wishes sure, but Blizz as it is just simply can't do it. it takes an artist to make an art

Wouldn't want this new team touching classic. If this is done, get the old devs back, then do it.

None of this matter in retail because retail is a frictionless world. Nothing pushes back against the player and forces them to use even 10% of the resources they have available. The quest is irrelevant if your brain is already numb from the gameplay.
