      Logan Parks are they actually disgusted? I'm white, and I'm afraid to say that I have said the phrase before but, I just said that out of curiosity because black people's hair are different, and the person said yes, I pretty much got a learning curve out of it. But with permission ofc. And I really loved the texture, and the life from that specific hair type, I apologize it offends you, but some people's curiosity gets the best of them 🤔🙂

    Im only 11 years old and all of my friends ask me that question like EVERY day. I don't blame them. They don't know what it feels like to have black hair. But when they say to me " Zizi your hair is so fluffy I wish I had your hair!" I feel special and proud of what type of hair I have. Before I wished I had long silky hair. But now.......I LOVE MY HAIR AND I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY HAIR 😀😀💙💙

    I have mixed race cousins and they have gorgeous Afro hair, when we were children we used to play with each other's hair because we were fascinated with the texture difference. I think it's just curiosity majority of the time, but people should learn that it can be irritating and invading people's personal space.

    Before you type a response to this, just because this question doesn't personally offend you when asked, doesn't mean that it can't and doesn't offend others - specifically others who are made to feel different in many other aspects of their lives by virtue of not being a part of the majority demographic.

      +Addison Clarke While the question may personally offend others; I think it would help for those who are offended to look at it in different ways. I've been asked the same question and didn't view it as objectification; rather I saw it as a legitimate sense of curiosity. I completely agree that it shouldn't be done without permission, but it usually isn't coming out of a sense of malice.

    My freshmen year of high school I wore my hair in a afro. Mind you I go to a school where it's not a lot of black people and I was like the only and still am the only black girl at my school who wears their 4c/kinky hair proudly. So this Argentinian girl in my band class ask me if she can touch my hair. So, I'm like fine everyone has been touching my hair all day. She decided to put pencils and pens in my hair to see if they would stay in their. That mad me a little upset to the point that I don't let people touch my hair as much.

    My hair is usually in long twists. The questions start out as "how long does it take?" which is fine. But then they touch without asking. I've had a lady run from across the other side of a store inside of a mall just to touch my hair. It's very frustrating and awkward.

    When I wear my natural hair out people always give me compliments and say “Your hair is really pretty”. And when I say “Thankyou” they take that as a gesture to touch my hair. It gets very annoying because they feel like I owe them a whiff of hair because they gave me a simple compliment🧍🏽‍♀️. She would touch my hair without asking me, and a few times she would pat my hair and be like "its just soon fluffy" like girl....if you don't go away. Vanish. I personally don't mind it i just need to be asked first each time.

    For 2 years I worn my hair in a protective hair style bun on the top of my head in an effort to go natural. My hair was now so healthy that I decided to wear it out in a big curly Afro. On the way to work I stopped to buy coffee and a lady reached out to touch my hair, but I dramatically ducked out of her reach while saying "Ooooh no no no"....and I stared at her...and I held the stare. Then I turned my back on the lady, smiled at the cashier, paid for my coffee and left. When I got to work I was ready. Someone reached out to touch my hair and I screamed. People ran over to my cubical and asked what was wrong. I told them "I saw her reaching out towards me and it scared me." She never tried shit again.
    Then there is the time when someone asked me “Is that your real hair.” I responded, “Oh, O-K. Quid Pro Quo...Let’s play. Are those your real teeth?”

It was so annoying when I was trying to be taken seriously and all people did was talk about some fucking pieces of ceratine coming out of my head. Like "Hey, we know you survived a rubber pipe being implanted into your abdominal vessels, lot of toxic shit being pumped through your body, dealing heart and hearing damage, vomiting blood, not being able to eat, getting your hipbone replaced and not being able to move or get up for 3 months, but yeah... growing hair is the biggest accomplishment."

    I can remember asking one lady I used to work with if I could touch her hair.
    She said yes, and I still couldn’t bring myself to touch it because I felt as if I would’ve been invading her space.
    I’ve never asked that question again.
    Now that I’ve seen this video, I will NEVER ask anyone else.
    It is however absolutely fascinating for hair to look as if it’s maybe 6-8 inches long, and yet I’ve watched young women take a strand and cause it to stretch out an EXTRA 6-8 inches
    Black hair is beautiful
    Please don’t be ashamed of your hair, and never be afraid to tell anyone “no”
    Your space is more important than someone else’s entertainment.

    Idk why is it ppl get offended for people not letting you touching something on your body (head in the case which is attached your own personal body.) You can be curious without touching people or asking to touch people. It’s not necessary. Control your impulses people and we’ll all be happy. This is for everyone no matter what race. Your body AND HAIR is your own and not everyone else’s. Just cuz you ask doesn’t mean you have rights to or that you just HAVE to. Keep your hands to yourself ppl.

  • @sandramorryssa

    I'm glad some of these ladies said yes.. because to me it's not that serious.. I feel like u have to have some insecurities about your hair to feel offended if someone wanted to touch it.. as a black woman, I LOVE my hair.. and I like to touch it too.. why would I deprive other people?
    BUT: I will say this though: there are a few hairstyles where u may not want people to touch it cause u might be afraid they'll mess it up.. but that's too much work.. I don't mess with those hairstyles..

      @evakaye5897 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    • @sandramorryssa
      @sandramorryssa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anyx B I hear what your saying.. and I don't think that it's odd for someone to be upset that someone doesn't want to be touched without their consent.. but I'm just talking about people "wanting to touch." like if someone asked to touch my hair (even if the answer is no), i wouldnt feel insulted, I'd feel flattered that they would "want" to touch it. That doesn't mean I think everyone should have their hand in my hair.😋 But the fact that you find my hair "facinating" to the point that u have the desire to touch it.. I can't see how that's not a compliment.

    • @sandramorryssa
      @sandramorryssa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anyx B there use to be a stigma that our hair was dirty, corse and something not to be desired... now we wear it proudly and the fact that people want to put their hands in it tells me that that stigma is changing.. again, I'm not advocating for strangers to pull up and just grab at my hair. And just because someone asks that doesn't mean the answer is yes.. but I don't think that when people ask our first reaction should be "you think I'm an animal" but rather "you like my hair" or "your interested in my view point" (as in you wonder about my hair, my life etc).

    • @sandramorryssa
      @sandramorryssa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just don't believe in getting upset if I don't have to.

    • @anyxb2548
      @anyxb2548 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I don't get upset I get aggravated. I understand what your saying but it'll be different if they did it to whites and Asians but they don't its just us. It reminds me of how they used to have our people in the human zoo. It's the principle of it all just because my hair don't look like yours doesn't give you the right to touch it. And I don't know what stigma your talking about because ever since I was young I've been natural and people never thought it was dirty. Think about it like this... when you go to the petting zoo you see animals with different fur and the most "exotic" looking fur is the one people always want to touch. You wanna admire my hair just say ,"I like your hair" and I will take that as a compliment.

Touching hair doesn’t dehumanize anyone and make them anywhere near equal to a pet, tf I love getting my hair touched during sex, when I’m sleeping, when I’m just hanging out, that doesn’t make me feel or seem any more inferior to anyone who’s touching it. It’s a gesture of kindness and it’s sweet. People find anything to have a titty attack over nowadays

    I get it, people like touching fabulous things, and my hair is fabulous. It's not offensive or even that annoying if it's my friend that's asking to touch my hair, it's when strangers do it and that's when it's weird and inappropriate.

  • @rei_cirith

    I think it's not too horrible when people ask. I mean, it's not a crime to be curious is it? Of course if someone just straight up reaches for your hair, that's rude as hell. I can also see it getting annoying if it happens all the time, but you have the right to say no.
    I think the more open we are to sharing our differences, the more comfortable we'll be about them. I grew up not seeing people as their race or gender, but as individuals. But I ask a lot of questions because I want to understand cultural or racial differences. The more you understand, the less you fear. The more you know the more you can relate, and the more you humanize the people around you.

    This reminds me of a story i would like to share. before i do though i want to explain something. This happened in primary school in the early 90s in ireland, I'm talking 93/4 and we did not have many black people in my city, maybe in dublin but not cork, so seeing a very very dark skinned black woman from africa was a huge different experience for us and she was so amazing and different.
    Anyways. I was with my classmates when our teacher brought in a special guest. she was from africa and was a princess back home of her tribe, you could sort of tell really now that i think about it because she looked important, you know? some royal people just have that look. She had some traditional jewellery and "regular" clothing but had tight cut very curly hair and without thinking one of the girls asked if she could please touch her hair. she said yes and let us all touch her hair. now looking back on it i can't believe how we just up and did that, but i was just so curious about this beautiful exotic woman from a place i knew nothing about and so desperate to learn more about her. we also got to learn songs and her language and she let us hold her hand in the songs and dances she taught. i remember thinking how soft her skin was and i thought it would be tougher then mine cause it looked like that. i think one girl even asked her why she had white palms and black skin
    i guess what i am trying to say is please don't think all white people do this just cause they are rude or meaning to cause offense, we (well, some of us!) are just curious and don't mean to upset anyone.
    This woman always returns to my mind. man she was a beautiful woman. and so kind and loving. she treated us with such love. even made us all grass skirts for the dance she taught us.

    When I go to Kenya each year all the young girls and boys come running up to me wanting to touch my hair and feel my hands. I don't go get all offended because someone see's something new that's a normal reaction for humans it's called being inquisitive it's not a demeaning thing. This shouldn't even be an issue it's as simple as when someone comes over to you and asks to feel your hair simply decline and say I do not like to share my personal space. There simple. Just recognise the fact that some people are impolite and will say rude shit and you've just got to get over it and tell them to stop and if they persist tell them that they are harassing you.But the overall message of the video was good guys apart from a few instances.

      honestly, girls in general who style their hair & curl it hate it when people mess up their hair so nbd if someone doesn't want you to touch theirs. If they got afros, imagine how much work it is to brush out such really curly hair? I doubt they would want people to come up and mess it up again or make it frizz. So it's understandable.

      @@danielle7368 I mean I get if you as a kid had never encountered a black person yet. It just depends on if the reaction is positive or negative. But the hair thing is seen as negative for some people because it makes it feel like they are seen as a dog and the question "can I touch it" almost resembles "can I pet your dog". That's how I feel perosnally. But from one of my encounters, I wasn't even asked. This kid who has been caught not washing his hands after using the bathroom on multiple occasions didnt even ask, he just randomly touched my hair. As if I were just some dog to be petted and on top of that his hands had a high chance of being dirty. I just think it is kind of weird/slightly off putting when a stranger asks because I wouldn't even let some friends touch my hair or acquaintances. And then saying it is so soft like did they just assume that our hair is not capable of being soft because of the texture? Hair is intimate because it is on your body. Some people dont mind and some people like me may find it alienating because most of us dont ask to touch hair different from ours so why do they do it to us?

    I go to a school where only a few of us have curly hair, so a good amount are so amused by my hair. (I'm white) and my hair is curly and LONG, and back in middle school people would touch it, tug at it, throw paper balls in it, and stick pens/pencils in it because they thought it was funny. So when people ask to touch it now, it really depends on who's asking, I get pretty uncomfortable but end up saying, "Yeah, just please dont try to run your fingers through it". It's even more awkward when its strangers at the store or something.

    I was volunteering at a farm in Namibia a few years back, and they had a small school for the children of the workers, all of them very dark skinned and all kinds of varieties of curly, black hair (one could have like small litte buttons of hair and another could have a long thick braid all the way down her back). But man, those kids are CRAZY about long, soft hair. They didn't even ask, they just said "sit down" and they went amok on my hair, braiding it, touching it, grooming it. It was pretty cute and they obviously had a swell time playing with my hair.
    So my input is just that everybody with one type of hair is fascinated by all other types of hair.

    I'm sure other ethnicities get asked that question too, if their hair is unique to them in some way, like if a woman's hair is so long, it goes down to her knees, for instance.
    And as a black woman, my hair is dry as I just wash and dry without adding any oils or grease to it, so they don't have to worry about having oily fingers when they touch my natural hair. lol!

    I'm a black guy and I live in Ontario Canada, this usually happened to me when I was in elementary school and in earlier grades (like grade 2-5) but by the time i was in 6th or 7th grade I never got that question anymore. In high school it wasn't even a thing anymore, they would comment or ask how long it takes if I had it in cornrows or twists and there was a period of time where I had black girls fawning over my hair, over the quality or something like that and the fact that I had my hair so long at it was completely natural.

    I don't think there's anything wrong with just asking. It comes from a place of curiosity. If you're a white person you don't have any experience with a black person's hair and you just want to know what it feels like. In regions with majority black populations they do the same thing to white people and it's fine because it comes from a place of curiosity.
    Like I remember when I was a kid and when a class man hot shaved bald we all wanted to know what their head felt like when it was smooth or prickly from all the short hairs. I think it's the same thing with people wanting to know what other ethnicities' hair feels like.
    Like you should obviously ask for permission to touch it and only do it if they say yes. You're not entitled to anything and it's their hair. And don't ask incessantly either and be mindful that they might get this question a lot, but as long as you are considerate and they are fine with it, it's ok.
    I know an African American guy and someone asked to touch his dreadlocks. I was a little bit confused because I thought it was racist to touch someone else's hair. But he said there was nothing wrong with it, they just wanted to know what it felt like. And if he's cool with it, I don't see anything wrong with just asking for the sake of curiosity.

    1:11 Love her perspective. I believe that curiosity is the door for understanding.
    I also understand that personal space is important. When I been asked, "Can I touch your hair?" I smile and let them touch it for a moment, and afterward, I start a conversation with the individual.

    I come from an extremely white background in the Nordic countries, so when I moved abroad to a much more diverse country and I became really good friends with this awesome black lady, I asked if I could feel the texture of her hair. She immediately answered "if I can feel yours!" which was a little surprising, but I felt like it was 1000% fair. Apparently I was pretty much the only person that had agreed to do a... mutual hair texture feeling. :P She had no idea what really straight hair felt like, and I didn't have a clue how her hair was. It was a really nice bonding experience too, and we had a good discussion about how black women and men get these kinds of questions and how it feels like :)

    i literally used to ask people this question all the time in middle school. like i didn't do it to be rude at all, and tbh i am sooo jealous of people with such a rare and diverse hair texture 🥺 plus, the dudes in my class let me twist their hair during lectures 😂😭

    The lady at 1:20 yes! Learning moments are a good way to look at things!
    As an asian, I don't really get asked of people if they can touch my hair a lot, but I don't think I would deny them unless it was like a creepy person. I've had little kids ask before and they are usually surprised it's soft when it looks more course.
    It probably is annoying to get asked but learning about blacks and black culture is a good step in the right direction of understanding!

    It always baffles me that so many people would ask this (and some don't even ask, they just do it). I wouldn't ever ask a stranger to touch any part of them. It's just such an intrusion into personal space and I don't quite understand why people have this strong desire to touch it. I'd have to be very close to someone to where I would even be interested to touch them in such a way.

    When I was little, I was living in Cameroon and all the black kids were constantly checking my hair and the cutest part was that they tried to braid it =D It's normal, it's different. But of course you have to ask first, otherwise it feels awkward when a stranger starts touching you ^^ I also got asked a lot if my hair was real since I use to dye it and make crazy hairdos ^^ It's actually flattering, people notice the work you put in it !

    I'm from Mexico and there's not a lot of people with that type of fluffy hair. When I came to the US, and saw a lot of girls with that hair, I was saying in my head "I want to touch it, I want to touch it", but I compose myself, saving me from an embarrassing and awkward moment. What I'm trying to say is that lots of people haven't seen that type of hair in their whole life's and they just can't control themselves.
