  • In this video I break down how to write a great positive character arc, a meaningful flat character arc, and a tragic negative character arc with examples from such amazing characters as...
    - Anne Boonchuy from Amphibia
    - Soren from The Dragon Prince
    - Captain America from the MCU
    - Loki from the MCU
Writers can learn a lot from these three characters, from how to make your redemption arcs truly impactful to how your protagonist's character arc can feel lived in and real.

The growth arc is one of my personal favorites because it sounds so simple but it really is great. Generally, you need to introduce your character and their flaw in the first 7 minutes of the film for the audience to be able to connect to them, and this can be hard. Keeping the flaw consistent with the character's actions throughout the story is even more difficult. But if you're a good enough writer and your character stays consistent, the "choice" moment, where the character is forced to choose wether to act on their flaw or on the truth and finally chooses TRUTH, is always incredibly impactful.

Yess it’s so common, you’d think it’s simple, but it’s really not. It takes some talented writers 👏

Saw the thumbnail and was fully prepared to rage because I had never heard of the flat arc and I assumed you were bashing Cap's journey in the MCU.
Immediately did a full 180. Excellent analysis. Assailed by doubt works perfectly for a character I've been working on and had no idea what to do with. Great help, great video.

Disillusionment I'd have to say berltotlti or reiner from aot kinda fits. I'll try to avoid spoilers but they learn the truth realize the worlds much bigger and more complex then them then double down on their original mission bc working for (redacted) was the better option.
Griffith from berserk might fit corruption.
"All for one" from mha potentially
Geto from jjk might fit corruption the best.He had a suto intervention at the start of his rampage by his best friend yet still kept going.

Corruption is a tid bit hard bc it's like betraying your better judgement to become a Judas. Some inquisitors are technically under this from the game jedi fallen order but the lie was forced on them they didn't necessarily choose it.

@@WritingWithAshoof😭 I guess all of those were anime (😮‍💨my weeb is showing)
Tldr I didn't mean to write an essay but some more western examples I feel are tia lung and two face who fit the two categories. Imo at least.
I guess a western example of disillusionment is kung fu panda's tia lung
When tia lung learns he's not the dragon warrior but has trained his whole life to be that. He doubles down on the notion that he is and becomes antagonistic. Even years later going to retrieve the scroll from the true dragon warrior bc he can't accept he's not him.
(Btw I was asking my friend about Dr strange villain Kaecilius who I think kinda fits corruption (I won't elaborate or I'll end up writing another essay). After explaining corruption he brings up tia lung which should've been a no brainer but ces't la vie I guess. Either way I did want to credit him and mention kaecilius)
A western example of corruption imo is Harvey dent from the dark night movie.
He starts off believing everyone deserves a chance believing in not only proper justice but Batman taking initiative to bring justice. After the incident where he lost Rachel to chance he leaves other people lives(including his own) up to chance. He doesn't really go towards a lie moreso a corruption of his original truth.
I wanna toss in the fact that in this movie he basically coined the phrase:
"you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain"
Which I believe is a good explanation of the corruption arc( which a couple other batman villains like Harley might fall into it thinking about it now)
Also wanted to point out the irony of two face who's whole thing is a two faced coin being the one to coin something.

@@YeviCoulson Ooo you're making me want to rewatch that Batman movie! Batman has some of the best villains, definitely need to do an analysis video of them sometime.
