As I had no contact in the industry I went on LinkedIn and emailed everybody who had the title "Content Acquisition". We just kept getting rejected. It took me time to accept I had failed. It was an unrealistic expectation.

I followed my other passion, technology, currently Blockchain. It lead me to Vuulr, a platform that brings film production in touch with distribution. It fascinated me.
I signed up and listed Munnariv. BTW you need to have a registered company to do that. I checked the box to SMS me if we received an offer and forgot about it. Surprisingly a few days later I did receive an SMS.

There it was. An actual offer to licence Munnariv for an OTT platform, based out of Chennai, called Viventra. They are scheduled to open this month and they wanted Munnariv to be one of the films in their opening collection.

Viventra is a pay per view, or transactional platform. The only wanted non-exclusive rights, which meant that if tomorrow we got an offer from Netflix or Amazon Prime we could have the film there as well. Now that's something.

Could not find the OTT platform you mentioned.
Munnariv was put up three OTT platforms. But I think they might have shut down now. Vuulr, where we sold the movie, still exists and is still a great place I'd recommend to check out.

I did try writing subtitles and timing them for the my early videos. It takes a lot of time to translate the dialogues from Malayalam to English, and to time each of it correctly. The plan is to get it done some time in the future, when it is viable to do so financially.

I haven't logged into Vuulr in some time. So I am not updated on who all are there.
If you are talking about platforms such as Netflix or Prime, then they do not need to go to markets such as Vuulr. Even then they have people clamouring in from all over the world to get their films onto their platform. So less likely you'd find such ultra giants.
But please verify it for yourself. Like I said, I haven't logged into Vuulr in a while.

Got it. A film is an asset that you can keep selling for about 80 years, like renting out a house. As Munnariv wasn't a theatre release it is probably going to take some time to breakeven.
Selling a short film is something that I do not have experience of. I cannot really help you there. I know of people who have done it. It mainly hinged on known actors, and the producer already having connections with a handful of OTT platforms from his previous works.
Winning awards at film festivals is one way that we were once able to recoup the money we spent on a short film. But we had made that short for 15k. So earning that was easily achievable. The larger your expense, the more difficult it becomes to recoup it.
I had written a script for a short film before Munnariv that would cost around 10 lakhs to make. I had no surefire way of recouping that amount for the producer from a short. Hence I haven't been able to make yet it.
That was also the reason why we decided to make a low budget feature for that money instead of a short. A feature film opens a lot more doors than a short. I learned a lot since, especially about the importance of marketing, selling, business, connections. All of which I am putting into practice now (even this TH-cam channel is part of that) so that I can do better next time.
Summing up, from what little I know, selling your short and recouping the money from OTT will depend on the popularity of the actors, your or the producers connections, and then a good trailer. Those will probably have the biggest impact on how much you recoup. Let me know where you stand on those.

No problems at all. Please ask away. In fact I'm glad you asked. When I was making the episode I didn't think anyone would want to know that.
The team from Viventra (the OTT platform) shared a folder in Google drive with us, where we uploaded all the files that they requested. The sharing of the film thus happened outside Vuulr.
Vuulr currently is only a marketplace where you can sell and license content. But if I remember correctly they do have plans to becoming a platform that does it all. It's a fairly new platform. Over the years they will probably grow into something bigger.

Hi Lone Survivor, which OTT platform are you looking at? Vuulr is just a marketplace where you can sell your film. OTT platforms inu avaravarude quality standards und. There are OTT 100+ platforms, each with their standards. Ningal ethu OTT platform aano nokkunath, athintey website il poyaal aa platform intey requirements undaakum.
In general parayuvaanel currently 1080p, Stereo sound aanu minimum requirement. Hope that answers your doubt.

My pleasure. If you are looking at Vuulr, yes, you need to be a registered company to even register on their site. Two of the OTT platform sales we did so far also needed a legal entity to do the sale (both came from Vuulr. Not sure if that is the reason). As I am not familiar with other marketplaces I cannot speak for that.
You might be able to sell directly as the artist to some platforms. But I am not aware of its details.
What kind of films do you make? Animation? Didn't find any on your channel.

30 minutes is generally considered a short film. There is no internationally recognised duration for shorts vs features. Varies from country to country. You can read more on that here iashik.com/should-i-make-a-feature-film-or-a-short-film/
Thus depending on the country of the OTT platform, durations for features too vary. In general parayuvaanel 40-60min+ minimum duration vendivarum for features. Best is to check with the OTT platform that you are looking for for their specifications.

Follow up video cheythittilla. Through Vuulr we got into 3 OTT platforms, 1 of which has shut down and another turned into an NFT platform. So far Munnariv has only been bought by one person, earning us ₹50, before tax, if I remember correctly.
Not very encouraging numbers, true, but that has more to do with the marketability of Munnariv as a film and not that of Vuulr. Hope that answers your questions.
