I felt the strong urge to hug these kids especially the little guy in the white shirt struggling to carry his instrument. I felt like hugging him tightly and holding him and protecting him and providing for him everything he could ever want or need. But I suppressed this urge, took the video, and walked on and still can’t stop thinking about these kids a week later and keep coming back to watch this video. I know that the other onlookers found their performance both amusing and touching as it drew many smiles but I don’t know if they felt as strongly protective of them as me. Perhaps they did but we have all been trained to tame our impulses and obscure any authentic display of emotion behind a facade of cool detachment. Love left unexpressed is like stopping a flower from blooming. It’s cruel to life and to nature. If you love someone say it. If you want to hug and protect someone do it. That very moment. There’s no need to fear looking like an over emotional fool. This is the biggest lesson I’ve learnt from the deep aching I feel to be with these kids again.
