I always come back to this version because I just can't get over the way Alfie Boe yells "I am WARNING YOU JAVERT" It's so powerful and has such a righteous, furious edge to it. I see all sides to Valjean here. (Also, Norm Lewis's "NO!" is incredible. There's such a dynamic to these two)
Adam Uhrynuk Different energy...This one sounds like he will rip your head right off it's spine. Quast (who I looove), is a more quiet intensity. Both brilliant, for sure! :)
Just think, if Javert had decided to take Valjon up on his offer and get cosette a good home then return to prison then we might have had a 'buddy movie' sort of story.
I think Valjean's part is easier to sing than Javert's. Valjean's voice is projected over Javert's voice and is more consistent in pace and note pattern.
I hear Javert better lol, I’m assuming u have really good ears because Javert’s actor just started to scream at one point and u couldn’t even hear Jean valjean anymore lmao
This is my favorite version of the confrontation, their voices just go so well together. The timing, rythm and melody is just perfect! For example, when they both say JAVERT! at the same time, at 1:21 .
These two have the most dynamic, vocally and characterwise... the rythmic delivery is very engaging from both and especially from Norm... This is such a gem!
It's a hard pick between this and the 10th annisversary version. The personalities are very different. In this one Javert is much more overpowering and Valjean is almost pleading.
So my math teacher and I really love Les Mis (I am literally wearing a shirt that says 'Who am I? Two Four Six O One!!!') She sings in a choir, and I am taking choir at school this year, and she sings tenor, and I can sing a low alto comfortably, and kind of sing tenor, so I really want to do this with her but I am too shy to ask.
@@Mira-go4yd I did and we sang it for a choir assignment I had and it was a lot of fun. That was more than a year ago and we're still in touch which is cool.
French Version: Javert: Valjean, at last Your sentence you will serve, Monsieur le Maire, You'll wear the chain you deserve. Valjean: Before you say another word, Javert, Before you chain me up like a slave again, Listen to me! There is a favor I must do. This woman leaves behind a suffering child, I have promised to help her, In heaven's name, three days are all I need. Then I'll return, you have my word! Then I'll return. Javert: Your words of a convict! I've hunted you across the years. Men like you cannot change. You can never change. Valjean: Believe of me what you will, There is a duty I must do, You know nothing of my life, All I did was steal some bread. You know nothing of the world, It is not all black and white. I will see my duty done. I am warning you, Javert, I am stronger than you by far, I know what I must do, If you will oppose me. I am warning you Javert, If I have to kill you, I will see my duty to the end, Nothing will stop me. Javert: Men like me can never change. Any more than men like you, No, 24601, My duty's to the law! You have no rights, You are under arrest, 24601, Now your luck has turned around, Jean Valjean is lost and found! Dare you talk to me of crime And the price you had to pay, Every man must choose his way, Every man is born in sin. You know nothing of Javert. I was born inside a cell, I was raised with scum like you, I was surrounded by outlaws too. Valjean: And this I swear by all I hold dear. Javert: You will not escape me again. Valjean: Cosette will soon have a father Javert: Wherever you hide, I will find you. Valjean: And she will want for nothing at all. Both: I swear to you, I will be there!

They sound kind of out of sync, or maybe it's just a little bit faster and I'm so used to their version, but I Javert is definitely more aggressive here, and I for one like that aspect a lot
Javert: Valjean, at last, we see each other plain...
Valjean: Oh my god Javert WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS

Javert is terrifying in this version
Norm Lewis is a beast.
mixmastermind He is, but the 10th Anniversary version is the best.
Adam Uhrynuk Different energy...This one sounds like he will rip your head right off it's spine. Quast (who I looove), is a more quiet intensity. Both brilliant, for sure! :)
stayalivesweetheart I agree, but it's just down to preference.
Russel Crowe is the best. Best Javert i have seen.
I like the way that Valjean finishes all of his verses first at 0:50. Showing that he is much less calm about the situation than Javert.
John Robinson javerts just obsessed
The duet on "I swear to you, I will be there" gives me CHILLS.
Just think, if Javert had decided to take Valjon up on his offer and get cosette a good home then return to prison then we might have had a 'buddy movie' sort of story.
This kinda happens in 3:10 to Yuma
@@DarkCreed could you explain? :')
@@markyjanu10 Is a western movie with Russel Crowe (who also played Javert) and Christian Bale. The ending is just like what the op said.
Interesting

Javert's low notes and “I'M WARNING YOU JAVERT” tho...
I think Valjean's part is easier to sing than Javert's. Valjean's voice is projected over Javert's voice and is more consistent in pace and note pattern.
Meagan Hodgson I can sing Javert's part just fine and as well as I can sing Jean Valjean's part
It also had to do with acting in the song. The actual music has basically the same pattern. Plus you have to think about tenor vs baritone.
I actually hear Javert’s lines better than Valjean’s

This is such a gem!
The tenderness in Valjean’s promise to Fantine is what always brings me back to this song
Norm is so authoritative! And he's such a softy irl
The way Javert yells "NO!" makes me smile and get scared
Is nobody gonna mention how Valjean's lyrics are in comic sans? :D
Josie Cocks they're not
They're in Lucida
According to WordPad, they're in Segoe Print.
In any way, the comic-like font is a subtle nod to the fact that Valjean is a former criminal.

I know you said this two years ago, but I’m literally just realizing that those are cellos and not a brass instrument XD! They have some real power!
@@thoughtlesspenny5793 yes to both… I never realized they weren’t brass.
It’s always fun to try and sing this in your own
I think confrontation is the best track of the whole musical

This Javert is Norm Lewis... I LOVE his baritone.
Javert sounds like Norm Lewis...
Edit: YES IT IS!! I highly recommend listening to him as the Phantom!!

best fucking javert in history

Javert truly demands authority
That first "Valjean" made me flinch and start crying.
thank you!!
Does anyone who watches Classic Doctor Who see this as a conversation between the Doctor and Salamander? Just me? Kay.
Nope
much quicker tempo then in other versions it seems
Javert is so intimidating here, he sounds like he'll eat Valjean alive

You gotta admit Colm wilkinson was the best Jean valjean 😂
No
Without a doubt the best
It is too fast
I can pull this off
Why 24601? What does it mean?
That's Valjean's number when he was in the slammer
It's good, but to me it doesn't quite compare to the rendition by Colm Wilkinson and Philip Quast.

Colm Wilkinson is the better Valjean but Norm Lewis is much better as Javert. He is much more fanatic.
I don't care for the cadence of Javert's delivery in this version.
