I'm still planning to do do both Godot and Unity content. Knowing feature set of more than one engine gives a way more flexibility when learning.

I think its a good move and I will stay with Unity since I will never pass the 1M threshold , and honestly if I will make over 1M it will be much cheaper than Unreal.
But unfortunately due to the previous TOS and what happened with Unity in the last 2 weeks, we can't trust Unity in 100% and I will definitely learn Godot/Monogame in my spare time to have peace in mind.
BTW the editing in the video are amazing

I'm reading a lot about Godot scalability for larger games. Now I am worried I should migrate to Unreal. But also, now I think I should make the game in Godot as a prototype and wait to see where it's limits are. I don't see Godot going anywhere, and it is functioning as a great prototyper for any of the other engines if it some-how can't achieve parity with them.

This isn't the first time John Riccitiello made a bonehead move and Unity had to come out and apologize. It's just the biggest one yet. If you think John Riccitiello is already planning another predatory scheme you are being naive. You can not trust Unity with John at the helm. He was fired from EA because he was so bad at his job. How or why he was hired to run Unity is mind boggling.

You didn't even know about Godot till recently, the engine has more than a decade of work on it, and it gets expanded day by day.
Honestly you should stay with unity, you seem to be the kind of close minded user they want.

I address that above. It's the "battered spouse," syndrome. People who have already committed and built their life around Unity will apologize and make excuses for its abusive behavior. • @Peak_Stone
      @Peak_Stone ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@starvr I am in the same boat. Unity was my first game engine, but I started learning Unreal and Godot alongside it a couple of years ago , Unreal because the unity render pipeline stuff, and the availability of assets. But both those engines take a while to load up, and Godot is just so much easier to use. C# is also a challenge for new developers. The language is probably great but once you start learning about events and delgates, you wonder what you initially wanted to do, which is to make games. Also, having events built right into Godot saved me from doing endless hours of research into C# specific features, which ends up in a rabbit hole.
I specifically left Unity because I found it a big hurdle to deal with events and I knew that Godot had events built in.
For new developers, new to coding, Godot is the best engine by far. Once you crack it, release a decent game, then you should consider your next game on one of the other engines. The game programming patterns transfer over, and It is so much easier to piece the patterns together in Godot, because the whole interface is focused on making the game. You dont have to go sighing up and downloading external editors, worrying about licensing, having more stuff than you know what to do with - it just sends off learnign about stuff that isn't to do with logic.

@@bezoro-personal How so? The fee is still there. And what stops them from chaning their mind again in a few years? And pretty much all the indie game devs I follow that use Unity and have a popular game (Namely Shadows of Doubt devs and Phasmaphobia devs) have basically said "we hate this decision but we're stuck with Unity because we'd have to rebuild our game from the ground up, but we won't use Unity for our next project".
Unity is dead and will not survive the next few years. No major developer like Nintendo or Microsoft will go along with this, and the indie scene is vaporizing before their eyes.

Short answer, yes. It's not install Fees its Runtime Fees.
      Long answer:
If you exceed 200k you need to upgrade to Unity Pro which costs around $2,000. If your game exceeds $1,000,000 AND 1,000,000 "initial engagements" then you need to start paying Runtime Fees.

I just saw a video where a dev made profits from making a game and i'm wondering. what if a dev made like millions in the first year like maybe 2M and then the proceeding year got just a constant average of 100-200k. obviously he will have to pay unity of either a flat amount or a runtime fee, will he/she have to pay that fee every month forever or just the months or years where he reached the unity's threshold of paying a fee? Idk if my question makes sense but im hoping for an answer. thanks

My gut feel is that them walking this back has taken them from "trust damaged and new structure is unreasonable", to "trust damage, but new structure is reasonable".
There will be a lot more people finishing their current Unity projects than before (where most people were looking at porting the game over to a different engine), but with Unity damaging their community's trust so much, I have no doubt that when people need to start new projects, they'll be looking at different engines instead of Unity. If they've tried to do these scummy changes once, they'll do it again.

It's too late. Even if the new pricing seem like a better deal (it's still crap) I just don't trust them anymore because it doesn't change the fact that Unity has become a spyware to deliver Ads and collect as much user data as possible and I hate it. Their goal is clear: Get installed on as many smartphone as possible, collect user data, deliver ads. Also, the runtime fee is still a completely arbitrary "trust me bro" metric, no company in there right mind would be okay with such a deal.

A bit harsh to say that would be naive. You can still use Unity in a non-comercial way.
I learned a lot about game design from Unity, and each engine has their own "systems" that may show you a different way to think about engine design. After using Unity for 5 years, I am way more confident in potentially making my own engine, or eventually transitioning to another one.
I think it's still worth looking at Unity as a option for getting into game development, but I can agree that doing a large scale project in Unity right now is not a good idea.

Currently we have LTS 2022 - and it's 2023. They are basically a year behind in LTS naming ;)

If unity can keep changing its pricing so frequently, who knows when 10 dev hit a million and they will start charging .20 cents again..

Unity has a real chance here to learn from their mistake and just take a huge lead over everyone else. I think they might do it. The nay-sayers and emotional complainers will never stop doing their thing, but so far, this is a huge step in the right direction.

I have no idea how that pricing thing got approved in the first place, but Unity already ruined their reputation. GG Unity

@@TheyBroughtBackStupidHandles What you don't understand is you start paying runtime fees if you make revenue of $ 1,000,000 in the last 12 months. Realistically, this applies only to a select few game studios. Please be realistic. I wonder if I'm the only poor soul on TH-cam comments.
