As I approach the one-year mark in my nursing career, time management remains a formidable challenge. The intense environment of the med-surg floor, where caring for 7 to 8 patients simultaneously is the norm, can be incredibly demanding. To mitigate the risk of burnout, I've chosen to spread out my shifts throughout the week rather than work consecutive days. However, this strategy comes with its own complications. While avoiding the exhaustion of back-to-back days is beneficial, it often feels like I'm starting from scratch with each new set of patients. The fast-paced discussions during rounds (with the nurse manager, doctors, social workers, and myself), coupled with managing assessments and medications, demand constant adaptation. On the rare occasions when I do work consecutive days, I notice a significant improvement in my understanding of my patients' conditions. This puts me in a dilemma: I'm torn between being more informed and connected with my patients' care and the necessity of safeguarding my well-being to avoid burnout. Improving my time management skills is a priority as I strive to build a stronger foundation in my nursing practice. Finding the right balance between providing knowledgeable care and maintaining my health is crucial. It's been tough trying to strike this balance.

Assignments on my med surge floor generally are not complete until 5-10 minutes after start of shift. Then it’s a race and gather around of nurses and techs from outgoing and oncoming shift to see it! So time management is impossible. Also while taking report at bedside patients are needing, demanding requesting repositioning, toileting, food, pain meds, etc. Also I am always walking into a bad IV left for me all while getting a patient from OR who also wants to give report while I am still in report on the floor!😂

NurseMeg.....my time management is absolutely horrible! I just started on a MedSurg floor after most of my 5-year nursing career has been procedural work, GI specifically. I worked at the bedside for a year and a half when I graduated nursing school, but I still struggled when I left that job. I have been at my current bedside job for about two months and it has not gotten any better. Yesterday was the absolute worst! I left feeling defeated as a nurse but also as a person. I felt like such a failure. I'm questioning my decision to go back to bedside, but I am also questioning my decision to become a nurse, period! I'd like to think that I'm stronger than this, but at this point I do not know if this is for me. They say it gets better but when? BTW, I love your report/flow sheet. I will attempt to use it next time.
