Just a month ago, I started my perfume collection. Currently, I have 20 bottles of perfume, with 13 of them being branded perfumes. It's kind of like an addiction because I find myself constantly ordering new perfumes online or visiting perfume stores to add to my collection after each delivery. However, I love it, as it's something I truly enjoy doing.
Interesting topic. The most I've ever spent in a day was a little over $1,100. Most I've spent on a bottle is $400. I'd estimate my current collection to be around $65,000

Around 8-10k here for a collection of roughly 100 bottles and around 20-30 big decants. Right now I am at the point where I want to defeat this addiction and enjoy what I have and add a perfume to my collection ONLY when I consider that is something that really excites me( like 1 or 2 a year). The most that I paid was 500 dollars for a 250 ml Ebene de Balmain, vintage, absolutely stunning.

However with 100 retail bottles averaging even a grey market resale value of about $150-200, and 100 10-30ml decants, it would be worth about $20K resale value. At retail values it's probably closer to $25-30K. I got a lot for free working in retail or making smart swaps over the years. Averaging about $1K per year on a hobby feels about right for me. Most expensive purchase was Mona Di Orio's Oud, original bottle. I think it was about $500-600.
I've never had a "Bucket List" in my life until now: Fly into YYZ...Crash at your place...Catch a Leafs/Habs game...Eat a couple shwarmas inside Anooj's Warehouse... (the following month I'll stay at Chu's flat).
I remember how fast premier avenue shipped you those desert gem perfumes 😂 . Jesus, was that mitsouko 30ml? God, that chamade is glorious, and the vol de nuit.

My other passion is jewelry...so by comparison, my perfume passion is inexpensive! The most I've ever spent was $700 for a 2012 Mitzah via eBay. The irony is that I decided I could get by with a decant and tried to sell it again, but eBay determined it "wasn't authentic" and banned it; I'd bought it 3 months prior, and there's no way to plead your case with them. I hope I can say I'm smarter now.

I want to love MDCI but I've only been impressed by Chypre Palatin (my favorite perfume) and Fetes Persanes. I almost love Invasion Barbare but it's just not quite good enough to buy for me. Of course, there are plenty of perfumes in my collection I'd gladly trade for it, I'm just trying to follow the Rich Mitch method and be more discerning in my purchases.
The threshold I have set for myself is no more than 200€ for 100ml. Only exceptions are FM Dessert Gems. Also, I pretty much never buy retail. People sell off even Designer exclusives and niche on local market sites...

Heaven forbid there’s a natural disaster I’m curious if insurance would cover it all! Honestly every hobby can get expensive but if you meet all of your fiduciary obligations and it brings you joy, who cares what you spend. Enjoy life as you please. I’m not too into this hobby where I could stomach spending that much and I know I wouldn’t use all of that. But people are into cars and watches (I used to be) and will spend double that with far fewer items too 🤷🏻♂️ It’s all relative and perspective. You’re happy, you share your passion selflessly and that’s really all that matters so good on you.

Not insanity It’s called passion. Keep living your passion my friend no guilt harboured. There are plenty of worse things to blow your money on that is for sure.
A question for the group. Do you have your perfume itemized on your homeowner/renters insurance policy? How do you track and document the contents of your collection? Excel? photos?
The house I grew up in sold for $33k in 2018.. you spent three times as much as my childhood home on perfumes😂😂 And I really think of you as just a regular guy, that’s astonishing.
Omg! I didn't know you had Habit Rouge extrait...but I should have guessed. I've looked for that forever. I honestly haven't tried to add up what I've spent for fear of barfing instantly 🤣🤣 I'm at the point now where almost anything I'm interested in is automatically over 3-4-500 dollars and it adds up quickly when buying several bottles.
Amazing collection. I own maybe 15.000 Euros in fragrances but panicked after watching Sebastian after he bought a Storage Room Auction collection and many parfumes turned. My house also has kinda a humidity problem 😂 reaching 70-80% in summer. So now I think about selling off a lot.
Gotta love your passion and dedication ! I know that Antoine Lie used Moroccan rose in some of his fragrances, did he use that in La douleur Exquise ? By the way I'm from Morocco so i'm curious :)
I don’t have a huge collection, it’s a mix of designer, vintage and niche, and I have had over a hundred bottles but sold most of them. I’m at 40 full size bottles currently and dozens of decants. I don’t like holding onto things I don’t actually wear. 1/3 of FB are discontinued, it’s harder to part with them. My husband has about 15 and together I think we spent 6 or 7k (on what we still have), but retail would be at least 10k. I’ve done pretty well getting some for deals. For example my dad picked me up a Roja Scandal Parfum Cologne for $40 at a garage sale. It was a bottle that got lost in the mail awhile when they ordered, and eventually showed up after its replacement. That’s in my husband’s collection now. One of my favorites is a pristine sealed 1/2oz 1950s No 5 extrait I got for $30. It’s lovely to wear, not a fan of the later formulations. My only Guerlain extrait is 1980s Shalimar ❤ but maybe I should hunt more down!
Most I've spent in a day was $3000 to purchase five 30ml pure Parfum bottle of Ensar Oud! They are Santal Sultan, EO1 Assam, EO2 Kashmir, Black Chango and Irish Ghalia. Most expensive bottle of spray perfumes (per ml) I purchased was Purple Kinam by Ensar Oud, $750 for a 15ml bottle. Now I'm broke 😅...
In your opinion, what are "pure parfum" versions of perfumes? I have never had one, but I am pretty sure I'm correct in saying they're not pure oils, like an attar. They have at least some alcohol. Are they a different formulation than the, say, EDP? Or are they in some cases just the EDP formulation with more oil and less alcohol for a 10x markup per ml?
Fantastic collection. I spent a big chunk of money after collecting all the Les exclusifs Chanel including 28 La Paula and a few discounted EDTs. The moon was an expensive purchase of £550
